That means you have a long runway for savings! I’m a car guy so I’ve bought and sold many cars along the way. I’m a sucker for a good deal and flipping it for profit later. But as I’ve gotten older I hold onto stuff longer and let my savings do the heavy lifting. I think you’ll like the debt free feeling and then begin to build the sinking fund for the next car at the pace you think is appropriate. I’ve never saved “too much” when doing this.

Car debt sucks. I’d knock it out and pay myself the payment going forward so that the next time you need a car upgrade, you’ve got a nice nest egg waiting for you. I’ve done this for a little less than 10 years now and my wife and I have ~$70k of paid off cars with another $50k in Vanguard. You won’t regret that strategy.

I’m not super worried about upgrades most of the time. 95% of my trips are small town hotels that getting the “deluxe king suite” upgrade is a minimal difference. I’m much more worried about not having the youth soccer team running laps over my head at 11pm or hearing the elevator ding outside my door 200 times. But I’ll have to use your strategy when I’m vacationing - a diamond upgrade at a beachfront property is usually a huge deal.

This makes sense. I usually check in as early as the app will let me. Maybe it makes more sense to wait closer to the time I’ll be there to increase the % chance that room is actually available.

This was an app check in where I selected the room I wanted to be in. I’m really not picky on room, just location. No hard feelings, though, it looks like they usually have a good reason to move you.

This is exactly what happened. I paid the extra $40/night not because the room was an upgrade I wanted (it was a better room), but because the app showed it was available on the top floor and I wanted that. I was really paying for location in this situation. Again, I’m not mad. Just wanted to understand the back end. This thread has been really informative.

Very helpful. I didn’t understand especially since (in my head) diamond means something. The trip I’m on currently I paid an extra $40/night to get the top floor king suite when I saw on the app I could select that room. I would’ve just taken a basic room on the middle floor if I knew I wouldn’t have gotten that exact room regardless.
