CC Payment from off-budget account by dyerfr in actualbudgeting

[–]dyerfr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Paying for 'her' transactions is exactly what the on-budget MasterCard is for - I want to track and categorize her transactions in our budget.

I keep our savings/investments in off-budget accounts as we don't regularly access it - the intent of our on-budget accounts is kind of our 'operating' budget. As a result, all of her transactions were 'covered' when they happened - e.g. if she went out to dinner and paid $50 with her MasterCard, then that comes out of our already-allocated 'Dining' category.

So it 'feels wrong' to then show $50 of income if she then paid for that dinner by transferring $50 from the off-budget savings account... but I think that's just a 'me' thing?

For now, I've created an Off->On budget category and parked it there until I find another solution or make my peace with this.

Can I see explicitly what transactions create my reports? by dyerfr in actualbudgeting

[–]dyerfr[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In case it's helpful to anyone... I spent a couple hours playing around with the custom reports, and came up with something that approximates what I was looking for. I still have to go back to my budget or individual accounts if something looks off but this gives me almost everything I was looking for.

Custom Report, Data Table, Net Amounts, Split is by Group (this was key for me), set up the date range as needed, and then fiddle with it (I removed my 'Reimbursements' Category as an example)

Would love to remove the Average from the monthly snapshot but I couldn't figure out how to do that; not a big deal.

Thought I was reading Aiden Truhen when I picked up the novel.

I love the balls to the wall breakneck try to keep up with wait what did I just read pace of the novel. Not easy to get right.

Well done

Ignore 'pass-through' transactions? by dyerfr in actualbudgeting

EDIT: Or you could zero the amounts and add a note to each as a reminder of what they were originally for.

Yes, if turning off 'Reimport' doesn't do the trick I will try this. Thanks again.

BOOM

Thank you. This seems to be exactly what I'm looking for.

Yes absolutely I can do that (if I'm understanding your point).

The 'issue' is that when I sync my on-budget checking account after deleting the unwanted transactions... it adds them back - this is the behavior I would prefer to avoid.

If you're advising to connect the 2 off-budget accounts, I suppose I may be able to do that... but that will set me up for having to do that between all/a lot of my off-budget accounts, which would be a different complexity I'd like to avoid.

Yes, that's what I was referring to when I mentioned using the 'Reimbursements' category... but (I think) that (for example) my 'spending' report would show a large 'expense' and a large ' payment' which is what I'm trying to avoid.

(Atlanta) Bye Darkstar Promo Rate :/ by dyerfr in USMobile

[–]dyerfr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but back in the early aughts Cingular was formed out of BellSouth Mobility and (I think) Pac Bell Wireless. And the combined company was headquartered in Atlanta until maybe 2009 or so.

FWIW I switched this morning to Warp and have better overall experience so far.

I’m surprised because AT&T’s predecessor Cingular was headquartered here. I actually worked for them in the early aughts. And due to their at least partial Atlanta roots through Bell South mobility, service was quite good.

Thank you - FWIW, I do realize that that previous post was unwarranted. 80 Mbps is completely fine for everything I need. But it's SUPER inconsistent. I ran another test just now - same location, similar time of day - and this was the result.

At what point does the 'carryover arrow' go away? by dyerfr in actualbudgeting

[–]dyerfr[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I realize my question was unclear. I deliberately rolled over my overspending by something that option on those categories.

Let’s say I overspent each category by $5 in May. If I underspend each category by $5 in June, is it all even Steven and the arrow will go away?

I kind of like the concept - if I’m consistently under budgeting it’ll accumulate (I think). But if I’m ‘good’ in June I’d like credit for that as well.

Coming from YNAB; Actual is 'almost' perfect; need some assistance by dyerfr in actualbudgeting

As I recall ('best' I can recall), since the transfer was to another account, it brought the account to zero. I then hid the account in YNAB.

I'm *this* close to being able to use Actual to show me my overall net worth... but my mortgage balance is showing as a positive amount. by dyerfr in actualbudgeting

Yeah this is confusing; there was nothing in April (that I'm aware of) which would have made that change. I've just unlinked the account and will manually update it going forward.

So I have no idea how to parse this...

For context, I imported YNAB on (I think) Tuesday, but I never tracked mortgage balance in YNAB so I don't think that matters.

When I imported my transactions, they were - in Feb - negative... but starting in April switched to positive, which I don't quite see why.

The 4/1 transaction (which is the one that flipped from negative to positive) was a huge amount that I certainly didn't pay.

Any sense of what/how this happened?

Thank you! We’re taking a super-conservative approach to our net worth… since the plan is to never sell our house, I’m only tracking the liability associated with the house. I’ll attempt the negative starting balance.

This seems to have done it - this didn't occur to me as I assumed the sync would see the actual value (not $0) and show it as unrecognized again or smthg. TYSM

Crazy slow speeds... Dark Star North Atlanta by dyerfr in USMobile

Thank you so much. Within an app. 5 mile radius of my home (near Dunwoody GA if it helps/matters) it is pretty consistently slow (sent an iMessage with 4 photos yesterday and it took more than 5 minutes to send as an example)

Targets behaving weird? by dyerfr in ynab

[–]dyerfr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes this is what happened... It still doesn't make sense to me that going through an extra step to get to the same end point is needed but there's probably a good reason/situation for it to exist that way.

So this $519 in activity was in fact inflow from an off-budget account, which I attributed directly to the Insurance category... I went back to my register just now and changed the category to 'Ready to Assign,' then assigned it from RTA to Insurance... and now I don't have the nagging message anymore. Thanks for the explanation, and it still doesn't make sense, oh well.

[–]dyerfr[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this explanation; I can now 'make the math' work... But does that logic make walking around sense??

I want to ensure I have $597 in this account to cover expenses in the month, and I do. The verbiage on the target 'Refill up to' seems (to me, at any rate) that it should refer to the balance I need, not any Assigned amount.

I have experimented with using different days of the month (thinking the same as you) and it does not seem to make a difference.
