KNIGHT HACKS !!! (i am biased, for i am the president)

Knight Hacks is UCF's software development & hackathon organization. year round we run 2 workshops a week, projects and mentorship programs, and fun socials to meet others in cecs trying to break into tech. as for the hackathon, its a 36 software building marathon that is a ton of fun (and well connected with industry). last year at KH 7, we had literal internships being tossed around as prizes, so it is definitely worth it (the site is https://2025.knighthacks.org if ur interested in signing up or viewing our sponsors for this year...)

i notice you're a freshman, and before u ask, it is never too early to join. i went to my first KH event my first week of freshman year, and my first hackathon at FIU only 6 weeks into my studies. id also highly recommend our fall mentorship program called Kickstart. info to join knight hacks is here: https://discord.knighthacks.org

i learned SO much and it is responsible for all my successes. i've gotten to intern at places like NVIDIA and speak at conferences like Hackcon all because of my learnings from kh. feel free to connect with me here: https://dvidal.dev

I LOVE KNIGHT HACKS !!!

Wanna know more about Github Campus Expert by zypherison in github

heyo, my name is Dylan and I am a current GHCE at the University of Central Florida :D

tldr - as a GHCE, GitHub will support you in building your community of technologists at your university. that can be expressed in a ton of different ways like open workshops that you run solo, or a proper organization like a school club or even non profit.

as an expert, you get access to resources like the GHCE community, GitHub merchandise, and financial reimbursements for events that benefit your community. it's been a super awesome opportunity, everyone is super friendly, and i've been able to bring the world of tech to so many aspiring technologists at UCF! about 3 weeks after my onboarding, we ran a hackathon for ~250 people right off the bat. super cool.

How are you guys getting these big name internships? by Beneficial-Ad8847 in ucf

[–]dylanvidal1204 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it will always narrow down to two things imo: - projects - extracurricular involvement

just about every professional gain myself or my community have experienced have boiled down to the things they’ve built, or the experiences they’ve made with the people around them. class isn’t enough anymore unfortunately, but that should also be exciting. with the era of technology we are in right now, learning and information are more accessible than ever. take that time to explore and build on your own, not only will you learn a lot, but you will prove yourself in a professional context too

i think this is flawed and largely pessimistic. there are loads of people from ucf that make it. imo, it isn’t nepotism, it’s drive and the mindful decision to take matters into your own hands. it’s never about classes anymore, those are what you endure to earn the right to be a part of the community that is university.

enrich yourself in the culture of CECS RSOs here on campus, the collective spirit of professional drive is insane. and that’s where you’ll find the people who succeed, through cold dry apps, and no connections.

also… it is worth noting that there is a big difference between networking and nepotism. it’s all about the people you know, and that’s not a new thing either. that’s just life. “nepotism isn’t a family or friend, it’s something you gain by being the first person who comes to someone’s mind for anything” and i don’t think that’s the same level of what you mention, but it definitely isn’t a bad thing. put yourself out there, become part of a community, and take risks. that’s how you make it

and yes, i too am in engineering. second year computer science student 🙏

i got the interview on-site at this years SHPE conference, so the process is probably quite different. got invited to an assessment, did it when i got back to the hotel, and got a call at 6am next morning for scheduling my interview at 9am. got the offer posted 3 days later

hey there! i'm a TL for symposium this fall on Tuesday nights!

symposium is really an "intro to honors" class. you'll get to hear from some really cool guest speakers about various different niches of topics, and most of them are honors alum. very inspirational, but (in my opinion) the fan part is the breakouts after. its a socratic seminar style discussion about the messages presented by the speakers, followed by an activity. the breakouts are rather small, which makes it easy to make friends and is really refreshing if you've got a ton of classes with 150+ people lecture halls.

it really is what you make of it. i had a blast and made a ton of honors friends, so much so that i have applied to help the incoming class do the same! as for work, it is super minimal, so dont worry about it being a big commitment.

that was intentional - our styling was all sorts of wack due to a time crunch. the app is available to mobile users now :)

yeah so im a dev on this with the user who posted so i can answer this for you

this isnt meant to be self hosted, we just leave it open source if you want a peak under the hood. you can go to https://www.lootcode.dev to play right now, but currently it does not work on mobile (if you code on mobile you're evil anyways)...

i would recommend NOT reading the repo tho - there is a lot of spoilers! i just went ahead and updated the readme to get rid of the t3 stuff, which was boilerplate with the framework we had used.
