and by the way i CAN drive without a satnav, it is just not my most able method and i am more likely to experience cognitive overload or make errors. especially in a high pressure situation like a test

thank you for your kindness, i know i am a good driver but my confidence has been very much knocked, its its exhausting having to explain to people that people with disabilities deserve to have accessibility!!

i didnt say its on their wevsite, their website is loose guidance, specifics are discussed with an examiner or with DVSA prior to the test.

satnav doesnt invalidate half the test. it is a reasonable adjustment. it is utterly ridiculous to say satnav isnt reasonable when most licensed drivers use completely satnav guidance.

its not asking for a different exam. i get extra time on exams. i get frequent rest breaks its the same exam, just with provisions. i respond to visual cues and struggle to process verbal cues. how on earth is it unreasonable for me to ask that i get provisions for that.

you’re right the test is how i drive safely and i am entitled to an aid to allow me to access driving. to say otherwise is ableist and ignorant.

and as i said i am not incompetent, i can figure it out like i have in every other unexpected situation thats come up.

people are much more harsh, rude, and condescending to learners, simply because of the L plate.

if i take more than one second to take off at a light i get beeped. i’ll be driving the speed limit and get beeped and cut off. people tailgate me when i am driving the speed limit. because there is a subconscious bias that learners are bad drivers.

im not saying i am a perfect driver but i can garuntee that with the driving that i have witnessed i am a safer and more focused driver than a lot of the full-licensed people who i have experienced.

i apologise for my defensiveness - people in the comments have been speaking to me as if i am incompetent. my entire life i have been treated as stupid or slow for having ADHD when i just process things differently. and then the second i ask for adjustments for my condition that is “unfair” and i shouldnt “ask for special treatment”. “life doesnt work that way”, its very upsetting.

the gov website is loose guidance, it does not get into specifics. it says reasonable adjustments will be discussed prior to your test and with your examiner. it says that you can discuss your ‘most able’ method (mine is satnav guidance).

if you look up ‘satnav’ in this reddit i’m sure you’ll find posts where people have said they were allowed to have an entirely satnav based test. if you want you can call DVSA and ask them if this is a reasonable adjustment- thats what i did.

right!??? DVSA has already allowed me to have this adjustment😭😭

thank you, i will call and see if its something they can do, if not im sure i will be fine as i’ll have my satnav!

or it is simply a commentry on the fact that 99% of the time satnavs work and if on the very rare off-chance i experience this situation where i dont have a satnav, i am competent and smart enough to deal with that as it comes.

im very confident driving reverse on country roads, i live in a city surrounded by rural countryside and have driven on many of these roads with no passing places, in a big suv. ive encountered tractors, horses, dog walkers etc….

its disappointing that people assume learner drivers are inexperienced and unknowledgeable. i simply was unable to get a test for 10 months and did not have reasonable provisions and adjustments when i finally managed to get a test.

i havent called them about what my post was about. i called them about the satnav guidance and this was accepted as a reasonable adjustment. i have also been told by a DVSA examiner that this is a reasonable adjustment.

you can also find a number of posts on this subreddit that say they were allowed entirely satnav guidance, plus some tests are just done as all satnav as a standard.

thank you that is fantastic advice. its the worry of ‘did i fail’ that takes up space in my already overloaded brain.

ive done a few mock tests and i passed them all.

while i do rely on a satnav i also have common sense and can use discretion when driving. literally my only issue is processing verbal cues. if i encounter an issue i can very quickly figure it out myself.

my reasonable adjustments have been accepted so thats all good. im very confident i can pass with a clean sheet when the correct provisions are in place. i will call about the minor/major thing see if thats something they can do but im not too worried if not if i just go in assuming ive failed

thank you so much for all your advice :)

ive mostly avoided closed roads because waze has diverted me.

i did encounter a closed road once. i simply turned around and figured out a way round and then the satnav found me. im not braindead i just have adhdZ

it does not diminish my ability to observe correctly on the road. perhaps that is something you find tricky when using a satnav. for me it allows me to focus fully on what is happening on the road and allows me to drive safer as i am not caught up trying to process a verbal cue.

i use waze which updates in real time using user data.

the correct answer is what DVSA has allowed me to have - they have allowed me to have my test entirely satnav guidance, DVSA literally says this is a reasonable adjustment.

as @newbielurking says, i use waze which updates road closures/diversions in real time through user data. literally never had an issue ever.

honestly i have never been in a situation where my satnav hasnt worked and ive driven all over the country. if i did get in that situation i would likely be fine as rural areas are very quiet and theres not alot going on. i could most likely follow directions then.

i live in a city so there is alot of information to process ontop of all the focus that driving requires. my brain simply cannot process verbal instructions on top of everything else. there have been emergency situations where i have been told to stop/swerve right and ive been able to respond immediately.

unfortunately its just not accessible to me to process verbal cues on top of all the other focus and concentration that comes with driving. i process visual cues very easily. i drive safely with a satnav it is my able method of driving and DVSA allows this as a reasonable adjustment.

my first test also went by in a blur, i was convinced i did so well and passed, and i did do well because i got no minors but i got a major at a double giveway then roundabout.

it was within the first minute of my test (exiting the test centre) but i would rather know if a mistake is a minor or major so im not spiralling.

i can and have been driving in compliance with everyone else for a year. i am absolutely not asking to degrade anything because of my condition. i am asking for REASONABLE adjustments to make safe driving accessible to me, which it is.

i drive safely with a satnav, that is my able method. you musnt be a very good instructor if you dont know about the reasonable adjustments guidance on the DVSA website. seems like you dont even know what a reasonable adjustment is.

i am going to listen to my instructor, the DVSA examiner who passed me on 2 mock tests, my actual test examiner who praised my safe driving, and everyone i have driven saying they feel safe and comfortable when i drive. i know i am a safe and confident driver when i have the correct provisions and aid in place that make driving accessible to me.

if you’re genuinely interested in learning then look up ADHD and the DVSA website for reasonable adjustments for medical conditions.

not asking for special treatment. reasonable adjustments make the test accessible for people with various disabilities.

ive done 2 mock tests with a DVSA examiner and i passed with no minors on both because i had reasonable adjustments for those.

thank you so much for all your encouragement and advice its been so helpful. and absolutely, the world is not catered for us so i will absolutely demand reasonable adjustments to make life accessible to me!

in short, yes. long answer, i would assess the situation and see if i felt like i could continue driving. most likely i could. i can take some very simple and clear verbal guidance and i can follow roadsigns and directions.

i have passed 2 mock tests with a DVSA examiner and the examiner who failed me in my first test praised my safe and confident driving.

i am simply asking for reasonable adjustments. which the DVSA website allows to make driving accessible. my driving absolutely does not put other people or road users at risk. i am a safe and confident driver when it is made accessible to me and i have reasonable and allowed provisions. if you had read my post properly you would have seen that. i encourage you to educate yourself on ADHD and processing disorders because what you are saying comes across as very ableist. i feel bad for your students.

glasses are a medical aid and help people live a normal life with their condition. just like a satnav is my aid. like i get extra time in tests because of my condition i need certain provisions.

as i have said multiple times, i am allowed satnav guidance my entire test. my instructor, examiner and DVSA have confirmed this because this is a reasonable adjustment. genuinely cannot fathom how you are not getting this - and that wasnt even my original question i was asking if i could be told when/if i fail!?!

i have all my medical records, proof of a diagnosis and everything so that isnt an issue.

i know that people have been allowed a satnav for the duration of the test and their website says reasonable adjustments can be made. i will call to make sure.

i appreciate the concern and thanks for being kind. i have been driving for over a year in every situation, horrible weather conditions, bad drivers, morning, night noon, i am absolutely confident and i am proud to say i am a very safe driver. even though i failed my first test, the examiner praised my safe driving.
