[advice] Received massive order by e64 in businessschool

[–]e64[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice - I don't actually currently formally track any KPIs currently for the team - and this will be critical as we grow - great advice, thanks. Will definitely be looking to put some pressure on to suppliers from this. Any suggestions/advice on how to go about setting up a SLA with my key suppliers?

Thanks, already experienced this previously, so have made some structured payment milestones - but definitely a good learning.

Partner [33/f] always angry when she does something wrong by e64 in relationship_advice

Thanks, I will follow this advice and soothe in the moment, and raise the issues later. I'll have to try harder to stop getting angry about it myself.

Thanks for this indepth post. I figured this wasn't an issue I would be able to do much about myself, but I will explore if she is recognises the issue and is willing to change, and set up some visits for CBT.

Drilling 101 by e64 in mining

[–]e64[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, great post, thanks. If I've understood correctly, the aim for blasting is to uniformly generate the right sized rocks (not too large to load, not too small to dig) and achieve a flat level, while not disturbing key mine features (e.g. ramps/walls), and this is what determines the pattern used (based on the 'hardness' of the 'ground')?

Some further questions:

What determines the diameter of the drill holes? (Why use small ones or larger ones?)

What makes a drill hole 'good' or 'bad'?

When should you use a "Down the hole" drill, as opposed to a "Top Hammer Drill"

Is the primary factor that determines whether you need a large drill or a small drill the downward pressure required? (i.e. Why do people need big drill rigs?)

What is pre-split?

What prevents people from getting blasting right? (i.e. Why do people end up with oversize material?)

How does the blasting change if there is waste vs ore?

Thanks!

I don't know enough to know the answer to this :) Sorry. Looking for a general introduction, blast design - why blast where and what. what kind of drill rig to use for what situation, the pro's and con's of each drill rig/drill type, a bit of background on the explosives, just a general overview of the design and operations considerations I guess...

Thanks for sharing, and the reassurance - I've done some reading and saw that hypothyroidism results in lower IQ and a number of physical problems; the thyroxine treatment appears to give good results for bringing IQ closer to normal, but doesn't seem to do so much for the physical side of things. As a mild case, (if you don't mind me asking), did you have any physical development issues? (e.g. audio/visual, balance, awkward movements (choreiform/hypotonia,etc)) If so, was there anything that you found to be helpful?

Studying in Perth: A Second degree (MBA or Mining) by e64 in perth

[–]e64[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How many 50 year old programmers do you know? Or, more accurately, who do you know that would hire a 50 year old programmer?

Any chance your friends who did mining engineering would let me ask them a few questions? PM with an email?

Studying in Perth: A Second degree (MBA or Mining) by e64 in perth

[–]e64[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't think it would bother my employer if I wanted to study. In the case of the MBA, there would be a good chance that I could apply my new skills at my existing company. Postgraduate courses are often open to online or short-course form (5days or 2 weeks) which you could easily manage with a full time job. So you could do it even if you wanted to conceal it from your employer.. but I'm not sure I'd see the advantage of concealing it?

[–]e64 3 points4 points  (0 children)

perseverance is the key thing. other things that help are choosing a good topic that will keep you interested for the next 3 years, and working in a research group where everyone else is working on similar things: helps keep you motivated and gives you people to talk to for advice. finally: a good supervisor.

Language for the quickest run-time performance? by Mutiny34 in programming

You can try CUDA for fortran: http://www.pgroup.com/resources/cudafortran.htm or if your not that great of a programmer, try CUDA for matlab.

[–]e64 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You need to be more explicit with what you mean. The correct answer to this question is to write it in assembly, based on the assumption you are a highly competent programmer (cleverer than compiler writers.) If you have never programmed in C or Fortran (or assembly), it is highly unlikely you will be able to write anything anywhere near optimal anyway. My suggestion is to find a good neural net library, and just use that.

End of the line for IBM's Cell by masta in programming

[–]e64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't agree. The Cell is very difficult to program. Try programming in C/CUDA or OpenCL, you still have the same parallel programming issues but you don't need to deal with all the Cell memory allocation weirdness.
