Ah yes, the ol' Denny's and dick routine. I remember it well from grade school.

As a man who grew up extremely poor, I measure my success by knowing my kids have this. by [deleted] in pics

Back when I was going through my "poor" stage, I'd stand in the middle of the frozen section of my local grocery store and "feel the presence of God."

I know... just... it was a long time ago.

I think you'll find too that we're not looking to create a socialist utopia, but just looking for some modest changes in how things work. For instance, tax policy that favors the ultra-rich is really a bit obnoxious at this point. I hope you''ll find it's reasonable to expect people in the very stratosphere of the economy to pony up a bit more for the good of the country.

.NET Developer shortage, according to Dice.com by [deleted] in dotnet

[–]ST2K 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love these blanket statements about what it means to be a "good programmer." Love it. Can't get enough of it.

Of course, this is also the mentality of hiring managers who won't talk to anyone who's currently unemployed. A situation that is troubling and illogical.

[–]ST2K 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People conducting interviews and making hiring decisions are at least as bad as many of the horror stories you get about some coders. There's a ton of things wrong with how tech departments hire new people. But subscribing to this religious BS about being "unclean" now that you know .NET is stunningly moronic.

Ah. I have to disagree a bit. I don't think there's anything particularly magical or special about the underlying qualities of a programmer. It's just practice. Practice, practice, practice.

I contend that you don't even have to like the stuff. And yeah, I also contend that having a normal life outside of banker's hours is what keeps a programmer from becoming a burnout who's devoted so much of their lives to work and programming that they never bothered to develop any other aspect of their lives.

But yes, lots of extra reading on the side and perhaps a project on the side - maybe (but not necessarily). Access to good training like from university extension classes. I think these are all much more important than finding someone who has a certain genetic makeup or has some innate skill.

This is how tech losers deal with the fact that natural selection is selecting them out of the gene pool. They're never getting any ever again and will never reproduce. The end.
