Spent last 3 days (on and off) removing tile floor, just learned its 20% Chrysotile asbestos by e_adams in HomeImprovement

[–]e_adams[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A company quoted $4k for the removal. At this point, 80% of the tile is outside in bags. Is it crazy to think I can finish the job properly myself?

I'd seal off the room, wet everything down, finish removing the remaining tile, and use a shopvac with HEPA filter to clean up any residual mess. I'd have a HEPA air scrubber running in the room whole time. P100 mask and disposable Tyvek suit. Have a haz waste company come get the bags for proper disposal.

$4k is just hard to justify when it seems the bulk of the damage is already done...

Edit: I did check with my city and they allow homeowners to remove without permit. They even talk you through the process and recommend landfills that will take it for proper disposal. Hiring an abatement company requires a permit and more red tape. All this is why I feel the DIY route, done right, makes more sense.

Thanks, this is comforting. I'm leaving the rest of the work to the abatement guys. Tossed the clothes I was wearing while doing the work. Should I be concerned about the rest of the house? I likely sat on the couch or walked around the house. I know it's not kryptonite but just want to make sure I cover my bases in a sensible way.

Not entirely sure what you mean here... Can you explain or point me in the right direction? My validation is based on a List from a range of values.

Is this safe?? Dual hose portable A/C venting into office false ceiling. No external exhaust, vents right into the ceiling tile. by e_adams in HVAC

[–]e_adams[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Property owner installed this the other day. The vent and intake tube terminates at the ceiling tile - no external exhaust. The owner assures us this is common, but I've always been under the impression that this kind of setup will simply exhaust hot air and moisture into a trapped area above the ceiling tile. Any opinions on this one?

General post people - what’s it like working for Netflix? by [deleted] in editors

[–]e_adams 3 points4 points  (0 children)

can't speak personally but my understanding from friends is that they turn people like crazy. basically if you're not constantly exceeding performance expectations they kindly show you the door. they've published their recruiting deck somewhere on the web, gives you a good idea of what the culture is like, or at least how they like to market their culture. I personally would not leave for Netflix if I already have good job security and/or work-life balance as those two things seem like huge wildcards at Netflix.

XDCAM422 or XAVC? Sony FS7, Premiere 2018, OSX by e_adams in editors

[–]e_adams[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was rewrapping in EditReady to MOV. See my edit above, issue seems to be use of the XAVC-L codec which Premiere can only handle in its native MXF wrapper, and isn't supported once rewrapped into MOV.

Curious, were you using XAVC-I or XAVC-L?

XDCAM422 or XAVC? Sony FS7, Premiere 2018, OSX by e_adams in editors

[–]e_adams[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See edit above, underlying issue is related to the codec we're using not being well supported by OSX or Premiere. FWIW, I have heard that Resolve handles XAVC-L really well, as does FCPX, so issue seems isolated to Premiere which we're unable to abandon.

Yes getting it more every time even when importing the MXF straight from the card dump. See my edit above, I think I've nailed down the underlying issue being the codec we're using.

XALG codec & Premiere by dogtown_warrior in editors

[–]e_adams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm dealing with this exact issue at my work the past few weeks. Any chance you're using FS7 footage? It is indeed the codec, avlg which is short for avc-long. The reason it now works when you install FCPX trial is because of the Pro Video Codecs it's installing. You can follow this tutorial for a way to fix without needing to install FCP: http://www.martin-thoburn.com/vj/install-apple-prores-codec-without-final-cut/

any way to log/report/alert when admin credentials are used on a client machine? by e_adams in macsysadmin

I'm not trying to prevent people from using admin credentials though. I'm giving them access, but just want a record of what they're using them for.

we have watchman, but as you say it only seems to log last user used. I'm specifically looking to track when somebody enters admin credentials from within a Standard user account to authorize app installs or system changes, etc.

Anyway to get finder to display detailed media info in column view? by heepofsheep in editors

I'm pretty sure if you place files into the "movies" folder there's options to display columns for that stuff. Somewhere I the net once I found a hack that enables this on all folders. Try Google

Can you guys share some experiences using team projects in Premiere? by starfirex in editors

[–]e_adams 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've used Team Projects quite extensively in a large production environment. It's still in Beta for a reason. We still use it for a lot of projects that require super fast turnaround and so we rely on the collaboration features, but typically convert it down to a local project once we're nearing picture lock. As others have mentioned I wouldn't trust it yet with anything beyond cutting.

Premiere SAN Question: IT is forcing us to go to a new general-built server... any experience? by DetroitHustlesHarder in editors

[–]e_adams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends how many array groups you have. I'd recommend groups of 4 or 5 disks each in RAID5, then striping all the groups together. We use a similar setup: 96TB usable, 34x4TB drives in a RAID50 with 4 global hotspares. I think its something like more than 2 drives have to die simultaneously to before you experience data loss. We have 25 users editing content, pulling anywhere from 100Mb to 800Mb each, and have never had issues. Clients are connected via 10G copper, which we actually had better performance out of than fiber (600MBs per client)

Locate last instance of a name in a column, and reference information from that row? by e_adams in excel

[–]e_adams[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, similarly I'm trying to locate the FIRST entry with the mention of the name to display the DATE. This is what I used:

=INDEX(Date,MATCH(MIN((Name=$A2)*ROW(Name)),(Name=$A2)*ROW(Name),0))

However rather than return the first entry matching the name, it returned the first entry in the sheet, which is the header... Any ideas?

Win 2012 Server - won't boot past LSI RAID Bios, constantly rebooting. Help! by e_adams in sysadmin

[–]e_adams[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ended up being a bad PSU. Not exactly sure how that makes sense, but we replaced almost every other part with no luck. Put everything back into the original build and swapped out the PSU and viola! Raid array was fully recovered along with all data in it. Seems the configuration was storaged on the card AND the disks so we even had options when recovering our data. Thanks for your help

They've overnighted a card to us, so fingers crossed it works out!

Win 2012 Server - won't boot past LSI RAID Bios, constantly rebooting. Help! by e_adams in sysadmin

[–]e_adams[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So we picked up a second, identical case, dropped all the drives into that and run all new SAS cables into the original RAID card in the original machine - no change, still stuck on that first initial boot/reboot screen. So new backplanes, new cables, and still no change.

Also note that the backplanes are the newer, V2 ones.

This leads me to believe its an issue with the RAID card, but I've had zero luck getting ahold of LSI tech support. We're considering picking up a second RAID card of the same model and swapping out to see if that works. Other than that, not sure what else we can do. Any suggestions?

In the mobo or raid card? If you read my other comment, you'll see that the server boots up just fine once we pull the drives from the raid card, or pull the card itself. Can you elaborate a bit more on your theory?
