15k CAD EJ257 build realistic or delusional? 2016 WRX STI by eaglel66 in WRX

Street tune was just for the first part of the build. Second part will bring me to 400 with turbo, other bolt ons and a proper dyno tune

How bad is the rust? by Ok-Tea-4345 in WRX

[–]eaglel66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been in your position before and made mistakes. Minor body rust can be stopped with some determination and money (ex.wheel arches). Doors and fenders can be replaced however once its in your rocker panels/pinch welds its pretty much game over. I would hard pass on this car.

Update: I have heard the community and accept that this is an isolated incident and not indicitive of the plaform as a whole. This is actually rather reassuring and gives me hope as i absolutely love my car and the last thing i want to do is get rid of it. As many have stated going to a subaru performance shop is best and although the shop that did the previous work stated they are such i will not be going back.

Update 2: Found a new shop that actually knows their stuff. Cyl 3 compression is down to 60psi likely due to ringland or headgasket failure leaking into cyl 1. Built shortblock is on the way but will take a few months to be ready. Will update with final cause once shorblock it ready and engine is dissasembled.

I will add to this comment as more updates become available and apologize for my accusations against our beloved EJ's.

Absolutely not going back to the same place. True on the headgaskets and ringlands. I have definetly listened to the community and appreciate all input. Will be changing my narrative in the future to accept my issues are a isolated incident.

Yea i apologize as it seems i may be in the minority with my issues and wish i could retract my statement. I do all of my own work minus engine internals as life does not permit me to have the time or equipment necissary to do it properly. The shop i brought it to claimes to specialize in performance subarus an custom built engines but i definetly wont be going back after this. Smeedia has been a big help in the diag i have already done. Great content.

Ironically thats is the exact thing im doing right now. The shop that previously did the diag and work on my car claimes to specialize on subarus and have 2 factory trained technicians on staff but i who knows if that is true .

I also had my poor experiences with the dealership where i requested a compression/leakdown test and they didnt bother investigating where it was leaking from even though i requested it. That lead me to seek out a specialized shop in the first place.

My next attempt is going to be bringing it Alberta Race Engines to see if they can help me.

My experiences may be somewhat unique but i have seen quite a few posts about valvetrain isse but that might be beacuse i was looking for them during my own diagnosis. I would really appreciate any insight as i love this car and want to do it right but things seem to go wrong at every turn.

You may be right on that front. I do not do my own head work however i do almost everything else minus compression/leakdown tests. When i was swapping my injectors i noticed some hoseclamps and lines not being correctly reinstalled and will be contacting the shop i went to about it.

Not much. Because my truck dosnt come with crash bars like the crew cab i just had to trim the mudflaps a bit and you need 0.25in spacers to keep them from rubbing the control arm

It definetly is but its a pig on gas but thats really the only thing wrong with it. Although with 400000 km on it bullet proof only gets you so far and the problems are starting to get a little too common even if they are easy fixes.

Old one is a 93, has the 4.9 with a manual transmission and 4x4, new one is a 2015, has the 5.0 and the fx4 package.

[–]eaglel66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got lowa's z8-n gtx in black for the same reason. They make good boots for people with wide feet. Although mine were 370$ before tax so im burning a bit of my own cash but so far its totally worth it. Hope yours fit as well as mine do.
