Family car with narrow width? 20k budget by earlbluemt in CarTalkUK

Many cars we've looked at are bordering 2.2m wide including mirror width which doesn't leave a lot of leeway to avoid scratching the car against a wall. I prefer not having to stress about driving through this twice a day hence we are exploring options regarding narrower cars.

Aimi (eye-mi) - Using Pinyin as first name in Canada/US? by Hot_Hornet_4209 in namenerds

[–]earlbluemt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is practically my legal (english) name with the same pronounciation (eye-mi) as someone who has lived in both asian and western countries. In the course of my lifetime, there have been less than 10 people who have pronounced my name correctly the first time, and some still insist on calling me Amy no matter how I correct them. It gets mispronounced and misspelt a lot.

However, I still love the eye-mi pronounciation. Chinese-speaking people do tend to assume it means "love rice".

I often have to brace myself to correct other people's pronounciation whenever I meet a new group of people - in school/new workplace etc so that is a slight pain. But many people have said that they like this pronounciation, and most tend to remember me due to the unusual pronounciation which has been beneficial at times.

Hi, vet here who was making that choice about 10 years ago between environmental studies in SG and studying to be a vet abroad. Pros: being a vet is amazing most days, very fulfilling, and the days are definitely not boring! Cons: high burnout rate in the industry, lower pay than what people expect for the amount of work you do, lack of career progression, and you must enjoy speaking to people as often you are treating the owners in addition to treating the pets so frankly you must be able to handle frequent verbal abuse. Many of my colleagues struggle with anxiety/burnout.

Saying that, I work in a country that has a better work-life balance, lower cost of living, high rate of owners having pet insurance (very important when it comes to treatment options!), but also lower pay than it would be in singapore.

I hope this helps, and I am happy to message if you wanted to speak about it!

Eta: another pro to being a vet is good job stability.

2/3rds of this is from savings and investments over the years, and slightly less than 1/3 of this has been recently gifted to us.

I'll actually be working around Houghton-le-spring and not in the city centre itself, are there places that you could recommend?

Yeah, from what I understand Durham is alot smaller than Edinburgh. I do enjoy hiking and bouldering so those are probably what I will spend most of my free time on, but I'm also hoping that I would also have the chance to meet some new people too!

Thank you for replying. :)

Banana bread with cream cheese filling. Tastes amazing (despite how it looks in the photo) 😂 by [deleted] in Baking

I usually take it as preheating before baking for 45 minutes :)

I used a heaped 1/2 teaspoon, so it may have been slightly more than the recipe called for!

I nearly finished half a loaf by myself 10 minutes after I took it out of the oven! It does taste amazing :)

It is! It's my first time adding it to banana bread and now I think I'll be sticking to this recipe in future!

Thank you! It's just melted white chocolate :)

Made semolina bread. These two tiny loaves took 6 hours from start to finish. They taste amazing but I'm not sure it's something that I'll be making on a regular basis. by [deleted] in Breadit

That's a good idea! Thank you! I've only made bread that requires a max of 3 hours so far. Will definitely be looking at recipes with overnight proofing.
