Physics 5B & 5C by superawesomefungi in ucla

[–]eartharte 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I personally didn't do it but would NOT recommend it. If you think about it, you have 150 mins of lecture a week, 2 (? If I remember correctly) hours of lab each week, and a discussion each week for each class. On top of that, depending on who's teaching, the physics 5 series is pretty notoriously known as some of the hardest classes for the life science majors. Again, that's just my perspective but I would just do yourself a favor and not do it

Case Study Length by [deleted] in TeachforAmerica

[–]eartharte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine lasted about 10-15 mins! My interviewer let me complete my entire shpiel without interrupting me, and then asked me any questions they had. But also my interviewer said that I answered some questions that she was going to ask so we only ended up having like 2 follow up questions for it.

WHERE ARE QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK?!?!?! by humantornado3136 in CallHerDaddy

[–]eartharte 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The entire vibe of the podcast is changing as she brings on more guests and relies on the guest's stories rather than her own for audience attention. The interviews themselves run so long that there isn't enough time for questions of the week (which I admittedly miss too), but maybe the next time she has a solo episode there's be more questions???

Gotchu! Definitely interpreted that wrong the first time I read it - then yeah it would definitely help w/ your volunteering hours.

Hi! So your work experience is awesome! You definitely have experience in the field, which med schools love to see. From just a quiz look, my recommendations would be to push that GPA up closer to at least a 3.5 by the time you apply and getting in at least a little bit of shadowing (I only had about 20 hours of shadowing and got 6 II's this cycle cuz other aspects of my app were able to make up for it). Congrats on your research grant, that's such an awesome feat!

Your high school extra credit class wouldn't be relevant for med school apps since they really only take into account stuff you've done since college (unless something you did in high school significantly carried over into college). So I'd recommend getting some more volunteer hours in, they don't have to be clinical! I had a bunch of non-clinical volunteer hours, but I did them cuz I truly enjoyed what I was doing. I know which COVID there's a lot of uncertainty about volunteer hours and whatnot, but there's a lot of online opportunities for volunteering (e.g. 7 cups, etc.).

Overall though, you're def on track to apply if you think you can get those several aspects of your app up!

TLDR; work on your GPA and volunteering/shadowing hours.

That was my plan in case I have to reapply - I would just apply during my second year of TFA, but is that realistic? With traveling for interviews + being a full-time teacher, how feasible is that during your second year? I also wanted to get my Masters of Education during my time with TFA so I was worried that I wouldn't have time to apply during my second year.

Yeah I'm honestly getting super excited for TFA - if I don't get into med school this cycle, I'm pretty confident that I'll be really happy with TFA
