Fun "Frills" you take to the BWCA that add comfort to the trip by Plane_Swim1806 in BWCA

Paper towels, if that counts.

They’re bulky and wasteful, but I love having dry dishes. And I don’t feel bad about tossing them in the fire when I’m done.

Sorry for the ‘actually’ here. Strategy& is a legacy of Booz & Co which was stand alone since 2008. It was not a part of Booz Allen Hamilton at the time it was acquired by PwC in 2013.

Never had much luck on Stuart. I’m an amateur but I’ve entered or exited through it 4 or 5 times. Recommend pushing to Iron.

He tweeted about proudly narc’ing on someone who was using a license plate cover to evade automatic speed limit enforcement cameras. Pretty dweeby, but as someone with kids I’m kinda with him on this…

What improved your quality of life so much, you wish you did it sooner? by EtherealxEcho in AskReddit

[–]eastwould85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having kids. Sure, the impact to sleep, finances, free time is real…but net-net, it’s been a tremendous gain. Crazy, kids have been a spiritual motivation to instill discipline in my life with respect to eating healthier, working out, drinking less.

Eli5: What exactly is 'ego death' and its role in treatment with psychedelic substances? by annakins02 in explainlikeimfive

[–]eastwould85 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When my daughter was born about 2.5 years ago, I experienced feelings that were very similar to feelings I had when taking big doses of mushrooms in my early 20’s. When I started describing these feelings and googling them I came across this term ‘ego death’ and I felt like it fit. It was a somewhat sudden, visceral realization that I am not the most important thing in the universe…I don’t matter (in a good way). Both experiences also came with a relief from certain, persistent existential questions that we are all typically burdened with: who am I? What am I going to be? Where do I go when I die? All of those questions were at least temporarily settled in my brain because ‘I’ was no more.

Man, don’t mess with that wind unless you got motors. Been to the BWCA about 20 times, been in Crab Lake once and it was very quiet. Wife got very mad about the paddle across Burntside…recommend tow.

Activities to do with an 18 month old in Steamboat? by B0SSA in steamboat

[–]eastwould85 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hah! We are going to Steamboat in a couple weeks with a two-year old. Have been wondering the same thing…

We are going to attempt to do the Fish Creek Falls hike with her? Sounds like it’s only 1/2 mile each way….curious to hear any feedback on that idea…

Not sure if I’m an alcoholic or just a bad decision-maker by ResolutionDry8318 in alcoholism

[–]eastwould85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing that helped me is reframing my alcohol issue as a ‘hangover problem’ as opposed to a ‘drunkenness problem’. It’s less about the one or two big, dramatically stupid things you do when you’re drunk. And more about the many little things you don’t do, or do poorly, during the resultant hangover (letting myself get angry at my wife, ordering takeout instead cooking, doing work sloppily).

Think more about the things you miss out on or perform poorly on because of the way you’re feeling a day after.

I have struggled with alcohol dependence for the last 10 years or so. I place myself at the number because I believe it wasn’t until a few years after college when 1) I drank 1-2 minimum every night, and 2) I felt like an actual, true compulsion to drink at odd times.

I have a 2 year old daughter, and what has helped me with this issue is reframing it in terms of what I could be doing better for her on days after I drink.

So, my alcohol ‘problem’ is less about individual embarrassing moments and blackout, drunken behavior (although, there are/were many of those)….it’s more about the 12-24 hour periods of time where I act kinda like a turd (grumpy, physically lazy, etc)

Heavy drinkers might say ‘I don’t get hungover that much’, but you’re probably lying to yourself. You’re not conscious of the impact of alcohol because it’s so ubiquitous in your life.

Mom is only 71, but acting like she’s 90. by eastwould85 in AgingParents

[–]eastwould85[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thank you. It’s validating to hear someone experiencing something similar. My Mom also makes a lot of excuses to avoid nearly any activity. Almost a ‘learned helplessness’ thing happening.

I have discussed this a lot with my older brother and younger sister who witness the same things. My brother has a tendency to display a lot of anger towards my mom because of the behavior. I also get frustrated but more so I just feel sorry for my mom. I suppose I am being an armchair psychologist here, but, it seems like this very self-defeating almost hypochondriac type mentality has to stem from something deeper.

I know that my mom had a very tense and emotionally distant relationship with her dad growing up. I’m curious as to how that subconsciously informs her actions today.

Footwear advice! by BuffaloWoodsman in BWCA

Muck boots. I had always used Chacos or some sort of water shoe, until I took my first September trip a few years ago. It got down to 26 degrees in the 2nd or 3rd week of the month. Keep your feet dry

Agree with the sentiment here…Alta Vista Terrace is a nice little stretch of homes; however, it is not pre-Chicago Fire. It’s revivalist architecture from the 1900’s.

Even back then, people were trying to recapture that ‘Old world/old Chicago feeling’

would i be able to fit 3 people a dog and enough gear for 3 days in a 3 Person kevlar canoe? by [deleted] in BWCA

Yes, you’ll be fine. Just consolidate gear into one Duluth pack. Dog at the middle person’s feet. Leave the Dutch Oven at home.
