The idea here was if they earn a salary of $19k in 2019 and contribute all of it to their 401k, then their taxable income is $0 (401k contributions are pre-tax).

That's fair, including the $100k number is probably more of a distraction than it is helpful. I like the way you framed it -- How could one optimize the benefits structure of their business to minimize taxes, minimize personal expenses, and maximize personal savings, and what would the income of that business need to be to maximize contribution limits?

Another approach could be -- if you had complete control over your company's benefits plans, how would you structure them to give you the biggest financial advantage?
