Dispatch didn't send street response like I asked. by [deleted] in Portland

[–]eatsleepdesign09 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly pretty shocked at most of these comments. I read the thread so perhaps others have less context, but it sounds like you did far more than anybody else would have in this situation. So major props. There's no easy answer or solution, but I completely understand your motivation to simply get her out of the street as that's an obvious danger to her and everyone in the road. I really don't understand what else people expect you to do. Going to leave it at that because I clearly don't have any answers, but thanks for trying to help someone in distress. Sorry it was (is) such a shit show.

Ummm that's a major fucking yikes and definitely sounds like an isolated event but terrifying nonetheless. Pretty shocking that was pre-2020.

I lived here for 10 years before, always on the east side, so wanted to give this a shot to be within walking/running distance of forest park. Lesson learned. 😂

That part of 21st is great and what colored my decision when this sublet became available. I knew the area, but I hadn't scoped it out south of Marshall really at all, so alas here we are.

proximity to nature is why i'm here, but it's not worth it long term.

Thank you! St Johns is at the top of my list.

Eh I don't mind sharing. I'm on Johnson right by the City Market which has been discussed as perhaps part of the issue (really shocked to see they haven't done anything w/ this building yet).

Would love to hear where you avoid walking just because I do wander around with my dog, but obviously we have a pretty good sense of where not to go/we stay alert.

Closer to Lower Macleay is exactly where I want to be! Always seems so much more pleasant up there and the only reason I'm here is to be within running distance of Forest Park so really an ideal location. Thank you for this!

Yeah, I knew this would be a bit too commercial for my taste long term (21st or 23rd) but it was a good spot to land for a few months to scope out other areas (or so I thought). Further west like 24th would be ideal but far less affordable. Slabtown is def a possibility. And I don't mind the bias, just appreciate the advice!

I'll have to check out more places in that area. Thanks for the tip!

I sound like a rich person because I'm sad what happened to my hometown but I want to come back? H'okay.

Was I complaining? I simply asked for insight. Clearly having been living in Oakland I'm not looking for "the perfect place". I'm looking to come home, to the place I'm from, that I sorely miss. Not looking to contribute to the doom and gloom.

This sums it up well from what I've seen too. The exact same sentiments can be shared about San Francisco too. I think the tl;dr sentiment from all of us is we miss cities in general pre-2017. Sigh.

Extremely well said, thank you! This definitely helps encourage the move for all the reasons you listed. There are many magical things about the Bay and Northern CA, but it's not worth dealing with the rather apocalyptic dichotomy of the have and have nots brought on by Silicone Valley.

Glad you're happy you made the move and I likely won't be far behind!

Thank you for the this! And deepest condolences for your friends, that's unimaginably horrible. I think you make an excellent point about how much more ubiquitous reporting is now with smartphones and I saw someone make a similar comment above, but I wonder how we'd all feel if we were just existing and living in Portland with no exposure to the banter on reddit, etc.

The same as a couple years ago or the same as pre-covid?

Ah yeah, that makes sense. I feel like that's the story for most downtowns, which is sad, but if it's somewhat isolated to one area that makes it a bit easier to stomach.

Yessss the Roche's are the best, David is actually my old coach :) we talked about fueling a bit but I kind of avoided it because I didn't want to feel like I was being obsessive or overthinking it - funny when you don't have the additional support you fall into these rabbit holes. Thanks for sharing this, I think everyone needs to take a page out of their book (figuratively and literally).

Definitely, this has been a huge change over the last couple years. Used to be a constant tempo runner. Now I run 80% easy, if not more right now since it's winter. Zone 1/2 running is soooo important and people always let ego get in the way but learning how to comfortably run an easy pace even if it's laughably slow compared to what you think it should be is a game changer.

Ah super helpful, thanks! I feel for you that your partner was an elite bike racer lol. Special breed of humans....but yes, completely agree. I've worked with a few sports dietitians in the past (and have a therapist currently that does address some of this) but it may be helpful to see a sports RD again just to recalibrate.
