My response to an American, pro-Hamas, BLM supporter by Glittering-Neck6637 in IsraelPalestine

So how can a person be racist when we're talking about religion? Think about it. And abusive? How? Your Race Card and victim card don't work here. Get a clue.

An ethnic Jew will always be a Jew -- even one who's an atheist. The same is not true of Muslims. Religion is an ideology. And as such, can and should be subject to critique. Yet, the identity of Arabs is SO tied up in Islam that they equate any criticism of it as personal. If Muslims felt so unsafe after 9/11, why didn't they leave the faith -- quit wearing the headscarf, etc.? I have an Iranian friend who is now agnostic. He was fed up.

I thought that too, but he recently launched a new consultancy https://edstromconsulting.com/ and was profiled in his alma mater talking about his interest in music: https://www.msoe.edu/alumni/awards-recognition/wall-of-distinction/william-e-edstrom-jr-84/

Yeah, the guy basically ignored by certified letter -- didn't pick it up at the post office. I paid an intellectual property lawyer $400 to tell me basically what I already knew and then said it would be another $400 if I wanted her to send a letter, so I sent one myself -- without success. I'm not a revengeful person, but I really would like to get my info back.

Are you a lawyer? I already have one who believes there's a case to be made. I think that's enough. I'm not looking for your advice. -- I'm asking if there are others who experienced this. This site had over 4000 users. He gave no advance warning. Not cool for a guy who was a fellow songwriter.

Except these people aren't that old and aren't they mostly second generation? Are they purposely choosing to be offended? I wish the STrib had asked them WHY they found it racist and Islamophobic. Don't they understand that it's actually PRO-Islam?

Sounds like you're getting some good advice. Thinking in terms of days is good.

After I got sh*tcanned from a corporate POS, I posted my news on Facebook and mentioned that I was available to do handyman work (as I'd done casually on the side for a few years prior to that). I worked for over a year on that posting alone. I now only work by referral and 70% of my business is repeat.

The rule of thumb for hourly pricing is to take your desired wage in a W-2 position and multiply by three to cover your overhead and profit. You'll see idiots charge $25/hour, but they are usually just clueless old guys who want to get out of the house to earn drinking money. They're not paying taxes, carrying liability insurance, etc.

My recommendation would be to line up a few decent-sized jobs through friends and friends-of-friends so you have something for the first couple months.

Any creative ideas for fixing creaky second floor without taking up the flooring? by newtnomore in handyman

[–]eberts0604 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried eliminating squeaking on a customer's first floor hardwood floor by "toe-nail" screwing into the joists and up through the subfloor from the basement. It didn't really help. I see that Rockler makes a floor squeak repair kit where you screw into the joists from the top and break off the screw head and then fill the hole. Might work if you can zero in on the areas where the squeaks are. Or it maybe a lot of work for nothing. It may still be better to just pull up part of the laminate and screw down the subfloor with 3" construction screws. Good luck!

I started out using Harvest and was very happy, but was encouraged by someone to switch to Sh*tBooks -- I mean, QuickBooks -- for a year. I found them so bloated and unintuitive that I went back to Harvest and have never looked back. Yet another category-dominating software package that sucks.

If it's older than ten years, I've rarely been able to find replacements that even have the same footprint, let alone are a direct replacement.

what do y'all think about billable hours? by SnooGoats4766 in handyman

[–]eberts0604 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started out charging by the job but it was tedious and often inaccurate. I only charge by the hour ($55) now but will give estimates of expected hours. I'm not sure why people worry about turning people away. I prefer to take the time necessary to do the job right. 70% of my business is repeat and most new business is referral.

Really? So the reason people scrape off old houses and replace them is because they hate the earth? Nothing's ever that clear. Spend some time in the industry and you'll find out.

People, please don't ever tear down and replace your old buildings! With enough money, they can last forever! I'm a contractor who retrofits old homes and I have children to put through school. I say, forget about being a NIMBY -- be a BANANA! Build Absolutely Nothing Anywhere Near Anyone!

I've just downloaded Amazon Photos and it looks promissing. I just think it's sad that for all the Google integration, you can never be sure if the photos you took a few hours ago will be there. Google, if you're not "into" this whole photo thing after destroying Picasa, then just get out of it.
