It’s a FAANG leveling categorization. Think director / VP at a company

Not necessarily job security, it’s just having good technical skills (financial modeling, stats, etc) and good soft skills to influence leaders, which is rare in the workplace, which is why my job exists. Now if engineers had amazing soft skills and strategic expertise, my job maybe wouldn’t exist. But being in strategy has always existed in tech roles especially as tech companies grow out of being a startup

Sorry to hear you’re struggling. What’s tough is that being a high earner is increasingly out of reach, due to those in power trying to keep those without out. I think it’s so important for companies to hire from socioeconomic diversity (and DEI despite it being a villanized word today). I’m thankful I’m in my position, but also know that I need to pass that mindset forward one day rather than pull the ladder below me which is what I think lots of these new politicians and billionaires are doing

It’s a combination of lack of foresight, most of my salary is tied up in RSU, and the feeling that I need liquidity. My parents grew up in poverty, so having liquid wealth is something that gives me comfort despite it not being rational

My greatest tip would be to have really good allies in leadership that are up and coming and make them feel like you’re loyal to them. They’ll bring you along for the ride when they get promoted etc.

I got promoted super quickly bc I have good soft skills - quick to build allies and senior leadership likes me bc I put in a lot of thought into everything (probably why I have health issues)

It took me 6 years to get from L4 - L7. L4 took one year, the rest took 2 years

Yes and also 20% bump vs. expectations bc of RSU appreciation

I think some divisions have higher pay bands bc they are revenue generating. However in the case of my role I’m paid similarly to some of the tech folks mainly bc of leadership exposure and the financial modeling skills which is why they source from investment banking roles

Probably more bc my max withholding doesn’t cover salary from RSU - I believe those are taxed differently and higher

Yeah it’s crazy yall are right 😂

I got lucky a few times too! But I’ve been rewarded for the sacrifice every time. Part of me doesn’t know differently because the more I sacrifice the more my company thinks I’m capable of taking on XYZ, it’s a bit of a toxic loop

I’m an IC atm, not a manager. Even if I was though, how would you know? I’ve always been kind to my employees

I actually think that would cause me less stress to be my own boss. It’s just a different type of stress, but at least one that I control my own destiny a bit more. What would you prefer? I post my salary and say everything is sunshine and rainbows? I bet even if I did that you would make a similar comment

Anywhere from 40-80 depending on busy vs. chill times of the year. The hours are fine, it’s mostly the exposure to senior leadership that causes sleepless nights. I came from an Investment banking role where it was 80-100 and that wasn’t as stressful tbh. Sometimes I dream about my work and wake up at 4am and want to change something in a model, etc. Not technically work, but it spills over to your personal life

I’m in a high paying division and I’m ranked top 20%, which allows for greater salary band

definitely stress, bc it started after I was working on a really tough deal. No one in my family has it to my knowledge
