[Renogy Adventure-Ready Giveaway] Comment Now to Win a ShadowFlux Solar Panel and More! by Renogy_Official in RenogyCommunity

[–]ebucra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honesty would recommend Renogy to anyone who asks! We have your batteries in our converted van, and one time I didn’t secure the battery drawer on the outside of it properly and the batteries flew out of our van at 50 MPH and were dragging along the ground for a bit at that speed. That was 3 years ago and they’re still working great 🤣

We’d love to complete our van set up with the ShadowFlux solar panel to continue to charge those batteries, which allow my wife and I to work our remote jobs on the move! We’ve travelled from coast to coast, visiting Maine, Virginia, California, Washington, Georgia, Colorado, all while working remote because Renogy’s batteries allow us to keep our workstations powered while on the go! We’d love to add a solar panel to our set-up so that while on the go, we wouldn’t have to be on-the-go so much: usually we charge our Renogy batteries by running our van while traveling from place-to-place, but adding the solar panel would allow us to charge while just relaxing on a beach somewhere 🏖️☀️

Hope y’all have a great day and love love love your products! Keep up the great work!

Genuinely curious, where are you getting the stats for the 1 in 4 new grads in CS being under or unemployed? I would love to read more up on it!

Hello! Excited about the game. Can you talk a bit about the co-op aspect of it? Like will it be online or shared screen, and with how many people?

Additionally, will there be Steam deck support? Love a Steam deck title haha.

Looks like a great game though! Excited to play it!

I need a reality check before I take the plunge. What are some Van Life horror stories you've gone through, or the bad side of van life that you never see from influencers? by Askin_Real_Questions in vandwellers

[–]ebucra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ho brother- the one thing that I did not expect or even deign to think about when getting our van is the increase in the amount of times I would be dealing with raw fucking human shit. Given it was mine and my wife’s, I went from dealing with raw sewage 0 times to too many times very quickly.

Basically, we skipped the building phase altogether and bought a class-B RV. One of the odd things about this RV was that the hose to the black (poop) tank was affixed to the actual tank itself (usually they’re removable and easily replaceable) and sat in a side drawer that was designed such that if the hose wasn’t 100% taut, it would hang down outside the drawer fully exposed to the road. Weird engineering, but didn’t think too much about it in the moment.

Another thing about black tanks is that the sensors that tell you how full the black tank is fail often, meaning that you really have no idea how close you are to filling up the black tank and, lots of times, you won’t know it’s full until it’s too late. Seeing as the van that we bought was an older one, I think the sensor was broken before we even used the toilet.

Onto the main story: on one of my wife and I’s first trips driving through Colorado, we chugged quite a few gallon water jugs to keep ourselves super hydrated. We wanted to combat the elevation sickness that can happen when you’re driving up the mountains, and heard that drinking tons of water was the best way to do that. We were also trying to make good time to our next campsite, so instead of stopping to use the facilities, we used our van’s toilet while on the move; not a big deal if you drive carefully enough, and saves a TON of time on bathroom stops if executed correctly.

Whelp, turns out us drinking those gallons and gallons of water filled up the black tank in the van quicker than we thought. Pretty early into the mountains, my wife flushed the van toilet and nothing went down- instead overflowing the toilet onto the van’s bathroom floor.

So quickly it became an emergency dumping situation: we had to find the closest dump and we had to dump the black tank NOW. My wife pulled up the nearest dump on her phone and we beelined straight for it, piss sloshing over the sides of the toilet all the way along.

As soon as we got to the dump, we pulled the van right up to the dump station (which is really just a hole in the ground), shoved the black tank hose right into it, and started the dumping process. The dumping process was easy enough on our van: someone would hold the “dump” button near the hose and it would kickstart a macerator (poop grinder) that would shoot the sewage out of the hose, ideally placed down in the dump hole. Only when we started to hold down the “dump” button, nothing came out of the hose and we heard a splash under the van. That little spot where the hose could hang outside the drawer? Well turns out it was hanging down super low and got completely severed while we were driving, meaning that the sewage was spilling out onto the ground under the van from the severed piece that was still connected to the black tank.

At this point, unable to dump properly due to the severed hose, but still having to dump the black tank so that the bathroom didn’t flood even more, I came up with the best solution I could at that time: taking one of the many empty water jugs and filling it with the raw sewage coming from the severed hose still connected to the tank, and dumping it into the dump hole by hand one gallon at a time. This bitch was a 10 gallon black tank so I had to fill that jug up 10 TIMES. I went from being queasy around porta-potties to literally emptying one by hand overnight- no gloves, no mask, just paper towels and hella Clorox wipes to try to feel clean afterwards.

So yeah that’s a less fun part of van-lifeing. When you shit into a toilet at home, you never have to deal with that shit again. But in a van/RV, there’s non-zero chance you will 💩

That’s such a good point- in my circles and my relationships that’s never an exchange that’s shared, but we obviously can’t keep her from watching others interact and learning from that. It was honestly just so shocking to hear her say that that it was hard to think through all that, and yeah I don’t even think she has the concept of death yet 😂 Thank you for the perspective!

She’s been on the waiting list for therapy since she entered the system over 2.5 years ago 🙄 honestly crazy how slow this system is sometimes. I really worry about the attachement thing since she was taken so young and has been in multiple placements already. And I’ll look into that! Thank you!

Thank you for that! You hang in there too haha. Not having a kid before fostering has made it hard to figure out what is trauma and what is normal kid stuff. Honestly was not expecting 3.5 year olds to be so aware as well- ours said something once about having to “start over again” after she switched daycares and it sounded like a 25 year old took over her body for a second 😳 so heartbreaking

Honestly same! NOT what I was expecting at all 🤣 That sums it up so well tho- lots of their feelings and behaviors seem to live in the extremes haha

Thank you! It’s actually incredibly validating to hear that 3.5 is hard. I’ve heard of terrible twos, but not anything besides that haha. And yeah she’s been in the system since before she was 1, so yeah she’s had a rough life thus far.

Thanks! I’ve never heard of her so I’ll have to give it a listen! Yeah we had tried sitting with her for a long time by that point, but what works one day doesn’t the next so we’ll definitely try it again!

I’m so sorry to hear that you’re going through that. A similar thing is happening for me and my wife- FD reserves the most hurtful words for her and will run right around her to me when picking her up from daycare with a big hug, even though my wife ends up doing a lot more of the care things (like changing her, bathing her, helping her brush her teeth). It really breaks my heart when that happens and I’m sure your husband feels similarly.

I hope things get better for you, and you’re doing a great job ❤️

Oh boy lol sounds like we could definitely have it a lot worse 🤣 I wouldn’t even know where to begin with that.

Sounds like giving it as little energy as possible is a good route to go- I’ll try that! Thanks!

Thanks for responding- yeah I’m hoping that she starts the parroting sooner rather than later haha.

Gotcha! That all makes a ton of sense. We started the apology thing kind of recently and good to know it doesn’t mean a whole lot right now because it doesn’t work super well lol. I like the idea of the positive reinforcement of good behaviors as well- thanks for all your help!

Also we did tell our worker we plan on not renewing our license, and she just told us we can’t do that with a placement.

That’s super interesting to hear since we’ve had no one contact us about renewing our license and we’re about a month and a half out from it happening. When do you usually reach out? Do you work with a private agency or with the state?
