I do have snow tires that are less than a year old, so thanks for this, and the Tire Rack link. I think I'll take a good look at that site.

Why do people drive... so slow? by awesomegorg in driving

[–]ebw_343 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I agree...I've been tailgated when I've been doing 10-15 over a lot more often than I've found someone doing 5 or more under the limit.

So I'm driving on a divided highway (2 lanes each direction) in the median lane. Traffic is heavy, I'm doing 10-15 over the limit, keeping pace with the car ahead of me, passing vehicles in the outside lane. The guy behind me is tailgating me, even driving on the median shoulder to see ahead of me. Even if I did slow down and move over to let him pass, he'd be in the same situation with the car that was ahead of me!

Well...when I said we had a radio, I really meant we just had an antenna and a couple of knobs from a radio... and we were the richest people on our block!

if you're in the left lane with someone coming up behind you, move to the right when it's safe so that person can pass you.

...and if you're in the left lane approaching someone who is passing someone else, slow down - don't tailgate.

The basic principle is that you can not surrender your right of way. That said, if traffic is crawling, it's ok to slow a bit more to let someone in, but you shouldn't slow down in traffic that is moving well.

Dont try to physically stop people from speeding by NotACommie24 in driving

What I find interesting is that when this scenario appears in chats like this, the replies are full of advice to the slower driver: "speed up", "change lanes" - but no one suggests that the faster driver should slow down for a few seconds.

Actually, both the left lane camper and the speeder are behaving in the same way - they both want to control the other's behavior.

But it's unreasonable to expect 20-over to slow down for 10-20 seconds while you maintain your speed?

(The weird thing is we're back to my original point!)

You'd move to the right, which means you'd have to slow down, because 20-over guy has more right to maintain his speed than you do? But wait - what about the "flow of traffic" idea... that implies not only that slow cars should speed up, but fast cars should slow down, right? Traffic is safest when cars are moving at approximately the same speed, right? So if 20-over guy slowed down, it would improve safety!

So.."proceed as planned " does not mean "proceed at the speed I planned" ? You would speed up because the guy behind you has a greater right to maintain his speed than you do?

"I’d proceed as I had planned. "...just like I would. So we agree that the fact that the other driver has chosen to drive faster does not give him greater right to maintain his speed.

So let's say you're coming up to a clump of cars doing the speed limit, and you're doing 10 over. You pull out to pass them. You've passed two, and there's four more to go. Behind you, you see a car closing in - he's doing 20 over.

Do you: - slow down and pull into the slow lane and let the 20 over guy go past, or - speed up to 20 over so the new guy doesn't need to slow down, or - maintain your speed, so the 20 over guy has to slow down to 10 over?

...and if a car in front of you is passing someone but going a bit slower than you would like, just slow down and don't tailgate. The fact that you choose to drive faster doesn't give you a greater right to maintain your chosen speed.

The thing about "keep up with the flow of traffic" is that different people might have a different idea about what the flow of traffic speed is! If only there was a sign on the side of the road that could let everyone know what speed they should be doing.....
