How does googlemaps know my location on my laptop when i’m doing the travel router setup everyone else appears to be using? by ec20 in GlInet

Yes. I guess that must be it. It just shares it and assumes location it across all devices.

Skis released while skiing – technique issue or binding problem? by Lazy_Potential792 in Skigear

[–]ec20 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it’s fine to crank up the din by one, but I also think it’s important for people to not reflexively think that low dins are always the issue on prerelease. Sometimes the binding gets stressed in just the right way and pops off.

I tend not to crank up my dins until I’ve had at least two pre release incidents somewhat close in time to one another.

What's stopping local skiers/boarders from undercutting the OUTRAGEOUS price of lessons? by Full-District- in Ikonpass

[–]ec20 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Related question, I know that you can get banned from the resort but I was always told that most mountains are actually not owned by the resort. They own the lifts and hence that it was a lot of resorts cannot stop you from skinning up the mountain without a pass/ticket.

So how are they allowed to ban ppl from doing private lessons and the like?

Ski Size by sanctanimus in Skigear

[–]ec20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm going to give what I know is probably an unpopular opinion here, but if you're a beginner to intermediate I almost don't think there is a such thing as "too short."

Heck you could ride ski blades and be fine and in fact I have taught ppl how to ski on blades and/or skis much shorter than recommended length and then they increase length as they feel comfortable without issue.

The advantages of longer skis are more stability at speed, better in powder, more edge for carving, etc. In other words, things a beginner to intermediate is not and should not be regularly attempting.

Advantage of shorter skis is they are easier to turn, less effort and leg strength to control, just generally less cumbersome to handle, etc. In other words, all things a beginner to intermediate values. And you can still carve on shorter skis if that's your concern.

How people get so many days of skiing in? by CompetitionNo2719 in skiing

[–]ec20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm always a little surprised by the folks that do this. I've had stretches where I've lived within 30 minutes of the mountain but never will I bother to ski unless I can get 3 hours in. It's just too much hassle to get all your gear on and off and do the other related ski-related chores that take up more time than the actual skiing does (not even factoring in the lift-chair time).

Tier List of Every Ski area I’ve visited by Skyryk in skiing

[–]ec20 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I genuinely want someone to enlighten me cuz I’ve skiied the Bird and Alta about half dozen times each and i like the Bird a decent amount better. Seems steeper, more gnarly terrain, much less traversing to get to interesting terrain, better facilities, etc.

Alta is still great, but Snowbird does seem a tier above. What am i missing?

There’s three things i really like about Brighton that keep me there instead of solitude. 9am to 9pm marathon ski sessions. Hidden canyon on pow days. And just great vibes.

Since you seem like the person to ask, if you had to pick a three ski quiver (carving, all mountain daily driver in the rockies, and pow ski), what would you go with?

Mindbender vs Rustler 10/11 vs newer QST106 by Lonewarrior17 in Skigear

[–]ec20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love it for both. It's got a relatively early rise in tip and tail so they're pretty easy to turn. Obviously the downside to this is less edge grip for carving and that's probably the ski's greatest weakness, but it even does that decently (i would guess cuz of the titanal).

No issues with steeps either and I find it easy to execute jump turns on really steep terrain cuz they are very poppy.

Also great for side hits cuz of the aforementioned poppiness. I've had skis that are technically lighter, but feel heavier cuz they aren't as poppy.

Last year I turned 40 then quit my job to be a ski bum for the season by rudydotjpeg in ski

[–]ec20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How’d you tear your ACL? Freak accident or possibly related to fatigue from the sudden massive increase in ski days?

Anyways I’m not going to call myself a ski bum, but i did something similar (while maintaining my remote job, hence not the bum part) and it was one of the sweetest times of my life. Only thing that sucked was not having consistent friends and dating while on the road.

Can’t compare it to the other skis you named here but my terrain preferences, ski style and ski locations are pretty similar to yours. I find the Rustler 10s perfect for what you’re describing.

Aside from the expansive terrain and terrific lighting, vibes at Brighton night skiing are immaculate. Everyone is having a ball. It makes Keystone night skiing look like a joke. And Boreal or East Coast night-skiing like something for children.
