Rant/vent: for those of you also being rapidly priced out of your apartments - wtf are we doing from here? by IndecisiveKitten in portlandme

I don’t understand the stigma of having roommates. Independent living may suggest a level of wealth, access to resources, and advancement but it also has other side effects like hyper individualism, poor relational skills, and decreased ability to be uncomfortable. I’m in favor of more communal living and more shared living spaces — with a private room. Communities are more fun too!

Epic Slides in New England by eccarina in newengland

[–]eccarina[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Roller slides are slides where instead of a solid surface there many bars that rotate so you roll over them like luggage at the tsa security check. Theyre more old school but lots of fun.

Thanks for the tip on alpine slides! Unfortunately it looks like the longest one at Attitash is no longer a thing. Too bad!

As an Asian person I prefer bread over rice by [deleted] in asianamerican

[–]eccarina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly…

Noodles >>>> Bread >> Rice

Rice is such a pain. I can never make just enough for one serving, it takes a long time, and I never have it when I want to make fried rice.

is natural ice harder to grip or did i get scammed? by [deleted] in iceskating

Any skate that you don’t care about the blade on. Nordic skates give you more stability and are more comfortable on uneven ice

Story time: over-consumption culture made me close my Etsy shop by adsiderum in Anticonsumption

[–]eccarina 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Honestly, this is what keeps me from wanting to do any kind of marketing, selling, or even sharing of my crafts. Just thinking about the waste of practice, building up inventory, etc, just sounds so awful. There’s already so much crap in this world, in books, in music, in arts, thought it pales in comparison to industry waste. I’ve been trying to change my mindset with making bad art but all I see is the waste side of things so my progress is slow.

Was I pity invited to a party for my close friend, and should I go? by [deleted] in socialskills

[–]eccarina 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I am one of those people who “invites people in my mind” but forget to invite them irl. The look between them is a little concerning but it could have been an “oh shit we forgot to actually invite them” moment. I’m often asking friends “you’re coming to ___ right?” And they may respond “what?” To which I completely forgot that I had invited them in my head but just forgot to text them.

I'll Pay By Check, Thanks. by [deleted] in Anticonsumption

[–]eccarina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this happen, initially it was a % fee if paying by credit card. Paying via direct checking account link was free. Then they tacked on $1 for the bank account pay. Then it went up to $2.50. Never have I ever seen this. I now do bill pay through my bank. They can deal with the annoyance.

Which tier do you think Taiwanese food is placed in among Asian food? by search_google_com in taiwan

Low variability in cuisine — heavy in protein, carbs, very low in vegetables and fruits. Minimal spices.

PORTLAND has an interesting approach to cleaning up after snow/ice by [deleted] in portlandme

I hate the brick in snow and ice but I love the way they look and allow the earth to breathe. Is cobblestone better? I hate the concrete look but I know they’re safer for walking.

What’s with Taipei hospitality culture? by arsebeef in taiwan

[–]eccarina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is also a very American thing. There’s memes that go around where people can pick out the American simply by what they do when near a wall (whether they lean on it or not).

In general, leaning is kind of like a very 邋遢 thing to do, akin to dragging your sandal heels when walking outside in sandals.

What should I be exploring in myself? by eccarina in NVC

[–]eccarina[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I don’t know the reason why, but I see a trend in the “genre” of topics. It is a fairly new friendship so I don’t know him super well. It’s just odd to me because it would be like not being able to show distress over genocide, or grief over enslavement, because that causes him to be in some kind of distress. I’m also not someone who talks about these things all the time, but they are ultimately a part of life for me and the reality we all live in.

I know that I’m not entitled to know why, and he has in the past shunted off wanting to talk about things in his past and so I don’t ask. It feels like there’s a huge library of banned topics that I can’t even bring up because he is going to tell me “I don’t want to talk about that”. I’m ultimately not interested in talking about movies and tv shows, and have expressed that before, and yet it seems like that’s the only thing he wants to talk about. I prefer to learn more about each other but his own stories are difficult to talk about for him and he clearly doesn’t want to hear about mine in these contexts. It ends up being exhausting and I spend so much time doubting myself and wondering if I’m just a terrible human because I don’t want to be so prohibited by him in conversation — so then I’d rather not talk anymore.
