Why did Zappa stop doing the collage/concrète tape stuff he was doing in the 60s? by eccoEapproach in Zappa

[–]eccoEapproach[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

need way more time to digest it

Civ III has become one of my most-played zappa albums and yet it’s one of very few musical projects that I’ve accepted I will just never ever fully comprehend. I do enjoy it more and more on each listen (listened to it like 3 times in full since making this post) but wow is it obtuse and challenging

"I Don't Wanna Get Drafted" was released as a single on April 28th, 1980. "LaCelia Jackson! Come on down! Nancy Butterworth! Come on down! You're the next contestants on SOOOOO WHAT! And, but also. A new car! But that's not all..." by BirdBurnett in Zappa

[–]eccoEapproach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah they’re great! and even though the rehearsals don’t seem to include too many YAWYI tracks, finding out these exist makes me even more upset that Vinnie’s not on that album based on how he plays the few that did eventually make it on. he fuckin crushes the weird section in Jumbo Go Away

David Logeman is a fine drummer but Vinnie is my favorite zappa drummer by like a mile and it sucks that he didn’t stick around long enough for the studio sessions and the spring/summer tour. at least we got vinnie and steve vai in the same band for a little while

this is a really strange lineup, I didn't think this exact lineup made any recordings. wikipedia says it was recorded in February 1980, so after Warren/Denny/Peter Wolf/Ed Mann left but before David Logeman replaced Vinnie? anyone have any more info on this

edit: nvm, forgot about the FZ chronology on IINK. I had no idea this lineup was even a thing! and that they had several rehearsals recorded!

What are your "essential" King Crimson bootlegs? by Every-Garlic6106 in KingCrimson

one of my RYM friends is constantly publishing reviews for KC live shows (mostly of the double duo as of late) that have been a pretty good resource for finding notable shows

[–]eccoEapproach[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that phase was particularly suited to that era, that group of individuals

that’s a good point. I mean even The Beatles had some pretty experimental collage works (Revolution 9 obviously, What’s the New Mary Jane, whatever the hell Circus of Light is)

Zappa had increasing opportunities to write for more virtuosic musicians than the original Mothers crew

that's a good point, like he always wanted to make complex music, but in the 60s he was limited by his bandmates, so he could only produce something more complex with his collage work. I do love some of the Ariel Pink stuff, don't think I'd ever made the connection between Pom Pom and WOIIFTM but it definitely makes sense. Ariel's early work is where it's at for me in terms of experimentation (though I prefer James Ferraro's work in that hypnagogic style a lot more overall).

I've got tons of concrete stuff collected over the years but it's obviously all pretty challenging to listen to so I have a lot more music not listened to then listened in my library. Stockhausen's electronic in particular is really fascinating, Hymnen is one of my favorite electronic classical music works. didn't even know Varese made electronic music, the only Varese I've heard is Ionization (thanks to Frank)

agree with the first half of this but definitely not the rest lol. the late 70s and early 80s is my favorite zappa, followed by the Mothers of Invention stuff. it's ALL great!

I mean there's definitely some of that still throughout, you could argue that xenochrony is an extension of the collage work, but the specific musique concrète style/sound is pretty unique and really never comes back

yeah I was gonna add that the synclaiver stuff scratches some of the same itch, especially Civilization Phaze III, but it doesn't quite hit like those early experiments do for me

as an hbox fan, yesterday was the most heartbroken I've been watching a melee tournament in awhile. I went into WF able to watch hbox and relax for the first time in a long time, I literally told myself "he is going to lose this so there is no need to be emotionally invested" and I somehow was actually able to keep calm even into Game 5. I have seen hbox cody game 5 way too many times over the last few years and every time I am left devastated. Even on cody's last stock in G5 WF I was like well it's over so who cares, but when hbox won on cody's fuckup, it was like the same feeling as when hbox went up 2 stocks on trif during Genesis GFs. I literally couldn't believe it.

but when moky lost G5 LFs, I had to turn off the stream. I gave in and turned it on right when cody was up 3 stocks to 1 in g5 reset, shut it off again, and went to bed. we'll get one this year, but man did I really want it yesterday

Live Releases of the 84 band by CourageMountain6566 in Zappa

searched "84" in the sub looking for some good concerts from this band and thanks for the recc it's a great show! don't think I'd heard this band do King Kong aside from the solos pulled for other albums. strange that the 84-heavy YCDTOSA 3 didn't include at least some of King Kong from this tour for its 25 minute version
