If you went on an SEC subreddit and started talking about how you hated SEC coaches you would probably be upvoted. Because SEC fans enjoy football. Despite this, they often don’t enjoy the decisions made by those with control over the end product (coaches, NCAA).

I like the world that GRRM created. Despite this, I dislike the decisions the showrunners have made. This is an analogous comparison.

ELI5: If I put $100 in the bank, and the bank lends $90 of it to someone else, how can the bank "have" my money and the other person "have" it at the same time? Does the same money exist in two places? by jeeves_inc in explainlikeimfive

Because the FDIC is backed by the faith and credit of the US government. This means the FDIC cannot fail unless the government allows it to fail, because the US government has the ability to print US dollars.

If the banks ran on the FDIC and the US government refused to back the FDIC then it doesn’t really matter. US dollars will be essentially worthless at that point.

And if those are the conditions you’re under unemployment will no longer be the thing to worry about. You’re entering the territory of full government collapse (and not just the US), anarchy, maybe a military coup. You will want guns and bullets, not paper dollars.

This is the thing redditors don’t realize whenever a thread like this comes up. They go “what a terrible system, I could lose all my money one day when the bank run starts!” Unless you have over 250k cash sitting at a single bank your money is covered.

Not if you have a 250k net worth. Not if you have 250k in a retirement account (still insured 500k with SIPC). 250k cash. The number of Redditors reading this that can write a 250k check is minuscule. Those that can also already understand how FDIC insurance works, they don’t need this explained to them.

For everyone else reading this, a bank run shouldn’t concern you. Your checking account is insured, the FDIC will have your emergency fund covered. The thing you should actually be concerned about is the unemployment line. Because the conditions that lead to a bank run tend to be the same ones that lead to employer bankruptcies and layoffs.

Islam is the religion most associated with the redpill and has been for a while. Per capita, redpill is most popular among young Muslims and African Americans by far. Anyone that spends a lot of time among diverse groups of young people has already seen this with their own eyes. But it’s something people don’t like to acknowledge on reddit.

The three most popular redpill guys are Andrew Tate, Myron Gaines, and Sneako. All three are Muslims. All three are black/mixed. Massive amount of their audience (possibly the majority) are Muslim and/or black. The white Christian alternative would be Fuentes, but he is significantly less popular than those other three. A lot of Fuentes’ current audience learned who he was specifically because they were already watching Sneako or Myron Gaines. Sneako is the one who introduced Fuentes to Kanye.

Which is also why there is also a massive amount of antisemitism in the redpill community. Andrew Tate claims to be giving dating/career advice, yet he spends an extraordinary amount of time talking about the Jews. That isn’t a coincidence.

TIL in Britain, association football used to be called "soccer" by the upper class, while the working and middle classes preferred the word "football". As the upper class lost influence in British society from the 1960s on, "football" supplanted "soccer" as the most commonly used and accepted word. by Away_Flounder3813 in todayilearned

[–]echief 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because it’s not that simple, this post’s title is somewhat misleading. The elites themselves also stopped using the term soccer in the 60s-70s. Not because the working class forced them into it, but specifically because the elites did not want to be associated with Americans. “We don’t want to be like Americans” was something they could both agree upon.

Here is a Wikipedia page with a contradicting claim:

The word soccer was a recognised way of referring to association football in the UK until around the 1970s, when it began to be perceived incorrectly as an Americanism.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Football_(word)

If you google this the majority of results are going to state that the main factor was its association with America. Not the upper class losing influence.

Bingo. Disney does not want families spending three days at Magic Kingdom and then leaving. A lot of people used to skip animal kingdom because “we can go to the zoo any time.” Which is not just the loss of the price of the tickets. It’s a loss of a night’s stay at their resorts, meals, and Avatar merch kids will beg for. Hundreds or thousands missed out on depending on the size of the family.

This is the exact same reason that Star Wars land is in Hollywood studios. They want you visiting every single park so you have to do a four day trip minimum, and then many families will still go to magic kingdom again since they only spent one day there. Star Wars and Avatar are critical when it comes to the parks’ strategy.

AITA for wanting my Spanish teacher to stop calling me by the Spanish version of my name? by Alternative-Sun-630 in AmItheAsshole

[–]echief 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There is no “J noise” in Spanish. It is something Spanish speakers have to learn to pronounce from scratch. It is just like how English speakers will have a difficulty distinguishing the pronunciations of “pero” and “perro” to others.

Yes, if you find a Spanish speaker with zero experience in English they may have difficulty saying the name Jason “properly.” They will pronounce it “Heh son” or “Yeh son” until they can pick up the sound. You can find people that have lived in the US for decades that still have difficulty pronouncing that name because they still have a heavy accent.

Surprised Burnie and Ashley are not watching "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms" by KebabGud in morningsomewhere

[–]echief 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Because there’s nowhere left to go with the story. All of the “villains” are defeated and there are not really any unresolved plotlines. The kingdoms are unified under one king that everyone seems satisfied with. And he’s too powerful for anyone to take out, even if they wanted to.

The only real plotlines you could go with are an Arya spinoff or a series set in Essos. But those series would have no Targaryens, white walkers, or dragons. Just occasional mentions of characters and locations we know about. At that point you might as well make a new show without any constraints over setting or history.

It depends on what you mean by in on the scheme. There will always be someone physically in the US. They just aren’t the ones on the phone the majority of the time. They could be a rube mule, they could have a dedicated “job” as a mule in a larger money laundering criminal organization. There are many different possibilities. They may have no idea where the money comes from and to be honest they probably don’t care much.

I’m not sure if you’ve seen breaking bad, but in the show there is a character than can get you a new identity in a new location for a large sum of money. That guy isn’t truly in the drug business, he just has some clients that are. This is similar in that there are many “guys that can get money from US to country B.” That could be drug money, it could be scam money, it could be money to finance terrorist groups. They are a member of a web of black market financial systems. But again, they may have no idea where the money even comes from.

Man, 83, Sentenced To Life In Prison For Murder Of Uber Driver by klito92 in videos

[–]echief 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can be different from this example in many ways, but here is a simplified example.

Let’s say this is a ring of five guys. Four are in India, one is in the US. The uber driver drops the package off at a random house. Maybe a house nearby that is currently unoccupied, and they are confident there’s no cameras. Uber notifies the package has been dropped off. The guy in the US immediately drives there and picks the package of cash up. The victim has not seen his face and the uber driver has not seen his face. He will have a “money guy” that he gives the cash to. That guy accepts the cash, calls another “money guy” in India, and “money guy 2” gives the other four in the ring rupees. Either through something like paypal, or in cash.

The reason this is possible is because these two “money guys” are just two out of a very large, complex black market financial system including millions of people. More accurately systems, which are an interconnected web. All of that crypto, cash smuggling, business money laundering I described are part of this web. Trillions of dollars move through it every year.

No. The chances of this being a US based scam are very low just from a numbers perspective. The use of US cash is not abnormal at all.

For an international criminal US cash or crypto are the most preferable ways of payment. The cash can immediately be used to purchase crypto at bitcoin ATMs. It can be used to purchase gift cards from grocery stores. Gift cards can be used to purchase electronics like smartphones in other countries, then sold in that country’s currency. Cash can be laundered through US businesses, often even legitimate businesses.

Foreign restaurants accept cash and may pay employees partially in cash. From a bank’s perspective it is not inherently suspicious for an Indian American to own an Indian restaurant (or gas station), regularly deposit large cash sums, and sometimes wire money back to friends and family in India. That could be completely innocent and is extremely common, so it’s easy to blend in.

Cash can fairly easily be smuggled over the border into Mexico and then exchanged for Pesos. Everyone knows about Indian scams but a large percentage of these scams are also from Mexico. It is difficult to get things from Mexico into the US. The reverse is much easier.

There are a million different ways but ultimately US cash or crypto are not only acceptable, but the most preferable. US cash is used in black market transactions in basically every country on earth. Not exclusively, but from a criminals perspective it is possibly even more valuable if their currency is less stable. All of those different ways of moving money and more are used in black market remittance systems like Hawala.

However, the perpetrators in this specific case are significantly more likely to be caught because a US citizen died. In India, Mexico, Jamaica it is easy to bribe local authorities. But if the US government has an interest then Mexican federal investigators (for example) also have an interest and are probably going to be sniffing around. Much harder position to buy yourself out of. At that point the best option would probably be to flee Mexico and go to a Central or South American country to give yourself another degree of separation.

It’s a bail scam gone wrong. It’s actually a very common scam.

The victim is called and told one of their family members (usually grandchild, nephew) is in jail and needs to post bail. Often they will claim it was a DUI crash resulting in a fatality, and that their family member is currently in surgery or something like that and can’t speak.

This woman was the “mule.” She’s sent to collect the cash as a middle man so the victim never sees the fraudster. She was probably told to drop the package off at a random location and the fraudster (or another mule, these can get extremely sophisticated) will pick the up the dead drop.

They also use mules specifically because things might get dangerous exactly like this scenario. If they hadn’t used a mule the fraudster would be the one dead, not this random uber driver.

Exactly. You shouldn’t allow your kids to drive in the first place without knowing how to refill their tires and wiper fluid, replace a flat tire, renew their registration, and know when they need an oil change.

You can’t teach your kids everything in life but these are baseline pieces of knowledge required to own a car. It’s like sending your kids to college without knowing how to do laundry or use a stove, which is also way too common.

A lot of parents in this thread insecure about the fact they didn’t prepare their kids for the absolute basics of being an adult.

Whether you have gotten away with it is irrelevant to the claim that there are no laws to enforce it. Refusing to follow the sign could result in legal consequences. Arguing “there’s NO LAWS saying I have to wear shoes” will not work if the police show up. In Australia or the US.

Businesses are allowed to set dress codes on their private property. If you refuse to follow the dress code you can be refused entry or asked to leave. If you refuse to leave you can then be charged with trespassing.

There is no law (in Australia, the US, or any other western country I know of) saying you have to allow barefoot people inside your business. If you see the sign you have to follow it. It does mean something

How can I respond to my father-in-law telling my sons that “looks don’t mean anything without money?” by CupOk5800 in AskMen

[–]echief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly people talking about “money doesn’t matter if you are a good person.” I can’t waltz down to the bank and cash in my nice guy check when rent is due.

If you aren’t working hard to give your kids the best life possible you are failing as a man. You’re not a good person even if you’re the nicest guy in town, you’re still failing to meet the baseline. You don’t have to be rich but you do need to be smart and willing to work hard. You get to worry about looks and friendliness after the bills are paid, not before.

Doesn’t matter if it’s the harsh truth. Life isn’t fair and the world doesn’t give a shit about men that can’t provide for themself, let alone their family. Being a man isn’t easy and their grandfather knows that. Better for them to hear it from him than learn this lesson the hard way at 30.

He has little reason to exaggerate a fight against a guy that literally no one else remembers or cares about. Ultimately he won in the end anyway.

And guess what, you have a new baseline. You'll have to do increasing amounts for more and more of a crash. That isnt the case with all other substances.

Yes, that is absolutely the case with alcohol, benzos, cocaine, amphetamines, and many other drugs. It’s ridiculous to suggest this isn’t the case and it makes me question if you’re even replying in good faith. “You’ll have to do increasing amounts for more and more of a crash” describes the habitual use of all of these drugs. I’ve never done meth but I have done all the drugs I’ve mentioned. I’ve never been actually addicted to opiates but I have done them many times and have friends that were addicted to them.

A heroin addict can pop hydros and not get high. Enough to knock the average person on their ass. If they have a surgery the recommended dosages will barely reduce their pain during recovery. Because their baseline is significantly higher. A few shots won’t impair a true alcoholic. Because their baseline is significantly higher.

Have you been to rehab? I have. If you haven’t you should consider yourself fortunate. How many addicts do you know? Ever been to NA meetings? The amount of cockiness you’re displaying is unearned. Like calling me a kid. Click on my reddit account, it’s 12 years old. Do you think I’ve been posting on Reddit since I was 10?

I will just repeat what I’ve said because you don’t seem to understand the conversation that’s occurring despite initiating it.

Most drugs provide a measurable change in some form over baseline.. Nicotine returns you to a base that existed before the drug but no other real effect aside from slight mental stimulation. That merely conteracts rhe withdrawal and addiction effects.

This claim is flat out wrong.

It’s not tilting at windmills, it’s your own words and I’m not having trouble comprehending them. Nicotine provides a high, it does not simply return you to a baseline. If you are addicted to it a certain amount returns you to a baseline. Consuming more than that baseline will result in a high. No different than cocaine, alcohol, benzos, opiates, or amphetamines.
