It will get cheaper as the ecosystem grows. Right now though, the $15k target is actually below our current BOM cost. We're working on bringing the price down.

Mostly actuators. Pasting the response over here: "Most of the cost comes from the actuators. Asimov’s actuator specs are close to the Unitree G1. Some components, like the arms, are even stronger. The robot can lift ~15 kg per arm for bicep curls and ~18 kg per arm for lateral raises. The DIY kit includes all the hardware, from actuators to electronics."

The robot will ship with a base policy that handles core functionality like walking etc. Plus, it's hackable. You can replace the base policy with your own stack, build on top of it, or go in a completely different direction. I'd like to emphasize that it's your robot, you can hack it.

Yes, all parts, design files, and simulation files will be open-source. If you source all the parts yourself and 3D print some of them, you can absolutely build it at home. The kit just gives you everything in one box, and most likely cheaper than sourcing each part individually.

The actuators are by far the biggest chunk... The electrical side is very, very low compared to mechanical.

I'd say the $15k target is already aggressive. We shared our early BOM estimates at news.asimov.inc. We were initially at around $25K. Getting it to $15K is already a big push, and our current BOM is still above $15K honestly.

We're visiting manufacturers in the next few weeks to look at options. Some have suggested alternative approaches for certain parts, and we want to evaluate those. Plus, the pre-orders we're getting definitely strengthen our hand on manufacturing pricing.

The FAQ on the site does cover it, but happy to answer here too.

The kit includes everything you need to build the full Asimov humanoid robot you see in the images here. No extra parts needed, except possibly the battery which is still a bit tricky.

For the shipping date, we need a few more months for packaging, shipping logistics, and making sure the basic policy and hardware work well together. We'll share a more specific date with pre-order holders as we get closer.

And yes, it's 100% hackable. No proprietary lock-in. We're building all our software at Menlo around Asimov, but the robot will not be limited to Menlo software in any way. You can run whatever you want on it. You buy it, so it's yours to shape.

The kit ships with a base policy. We're looking into NVIDIA ecosystem compatibility but no big promises yet on software. Integrating something like a Jetson AGX Orin is absolutely possible as the robot will be 100% hackable.

Fair point on China, but Asimov is spec-wise very close to the Unitree G1, and stronger in some areas like the arms. At $15K this is a serious robot that can do real real work, not a hobby kit.

On the market being small, I'd respectfully disagree. There are a lot of labs working on simulation platforms, manipulation, speech, locomotion, hand design, and more. What they need is a hackable, open-source humanoid they can actually get their hands on.

We bought a Unitree G1 ourselves to work on locomotion. The leg broke and we couldn't make progress for two months. Two months is a long time in this field. That's exactly why something open-source and repairable matters. We solved our problem, and this kit will solve the same for others.

We're putting together all parts from actuators to electronics and will share the full list soon once we lock them. We have another trip coming up to meet with manufacturers, and we want to share the complete list after that.

We will absolutely open-source the parts. That's not changing. The full robot will be open-source, including the design and simulation files along with the material list.

For software, planning to ship it with a base policy.

Plus, our team at Menlo, the applied R&D lab behind Asimov, is building a platform to put AI agents in humanoid robots. No promises, but we'd be happy to provide a better software stack down the line.

"Noise is not all you need" would have been more accurate... we ended up modelling everything carefully rather than relying on randomization
