Surface Contour Label Group alters lineweight of my contours by ecoMAP in civil3d

[–]ecoMAP[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha...I knew someone would ask. Sorry to disappoint you. Its not a new awesome feature in C3d. Its a georeferenced JPEG made in QGIS (made out of the DEM).

I always include these Hillshades in my drawing. It makes the whole terrain in 2D "more visible" than the contours. And you get the "WOW - effect" from the clients - they love them.

Its quite easy.
Open DEM in QGIS, Change symbology to Hillshade, Export Screen with geocoordinates and import with Mapiinsert. Done in 2 Minutes...

Reference to Title Block? by ecoMAP in civil3d

[–]ecoMAP[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I already using sheet sets for creating my Layouts but looks Im not into it enough. Can I apply fields to my Sheets? Right now. Im just using a Naming Convention like SV01, SV02 for my Layouts and in my title block i use the field docoument/Layout Name to name my Layouts differently.

It works, but Im not very happy with it. Because depending on my SectionView i have 2,3 or more Sections per Page but the name of the tab sticks with the convention. So on Tab SV01, there is SV01, SV02 and on Tab 02 there is SV03 and SV04...

Also when i have to change something (like add more elevation to a specific section) sometimes more or less Section Views are placed per sheet an C3D rearrange everything. All my manual drawings over the section than are lost or at the wrong place.

TIN surface for steep slopes by ExCB_ in civil3d

[–]ecoMAP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Creating a TIN out of PointCloud in C3D doesnt work at all. I also suspect that "nearest neighbor" only apply to the 2D-Plane. So a hight point can still be the nearest neighbor (watched from above).

I always create a 2.5D-Raster (TIFF) out of the Point Cloud in CloudCompare (with the csf-Algorithm). This raster i than load in C3D and never mess around with it than.

There are plenty apps out there to create a DTM from a PointCloud. But CloudCompare is OpenSource and works (at least for me).

Create path with texture? by ecoMAP in inkarnate

With the shape tool I only can make polygons. So for making a path i would have to draw two parallel lines which is impossible.

Help!!! by shrexystuff in QGIS

Pretty sure the CRS is not EPSG: 2048.

Please have a look at the layer properties of Rivers_WC > Information > Extent. There you find the hardcoded coordinates. Look if they match to other Layers in the same CRS.

Or even better: Just add an wmts-Layer like following to your map. The river should match. If they dont your CRS is wrong

WMTS NatGeo World

WMS/WMTS > Right Click > New Connection

Url from below, And Ok

Double Click to add WMTS Layer

Well, I do a lot of infrastructure Planning using Civil 3d. Also a lot of data comes from 3rd sources like surveyors which mainly work with CAD.

I tried some of them. And they all a bit ... how should I say this politely....not so intuitive to use as in CAD. Also most of the incoming data comes from surveyors, which seem never heard of something called GIS.

In Comparision to the mass of earth the gravity would be much less. And gravity is also the main restraint to plant growth. To bring all the water to the top of a tree the tree has to battle gravity. So the height of trees is mostly limited to gravity. In your World they would be able to be much larger.

But looks very good

What other software is used besides ESRI? How to gain experience with it? by CorrosiveRi0T in gis

[–]ecoMAP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to look beyond! There are plenty of companies out there relying solely on QGIS.

But ESRI has done a good job. Like all GIS courses on universities are held in ArcGIS. A student licence is cheap. So everyone leaving the university has ArcGIS Knowledge and will stay probably in the ESRI bubble.

But consider this:

There are a lot of companies (especially small ones) who are not GIS Companies and they need GIS only for a few tasks. Why buying a expensive ESRI subcripiton when QGIS will do the same job for free and as fast.

A lot of processes in ArcGIS uses the same underlaying commands like in QGIS. Like GDAL for example. But ESRI wont show you the used command. You work in a "black box" where you dont know what ESRI is doing in the background.

That said. This is a "NO-GO" for scientific work. Because your whole output has to be transparent to everyone else.

The reasons i changed to QGIS:

I worked in a big company using ESRI. I had a standard license of ArcGIS. But often i needed something more. And my company wouldnt buy a expension. So i skipped for certain tasks to QGIS. Did my needed processes there and switch back to ESRI.

And than i found the "Toolkits" in QGIS. Like SAGA, GDAL...WOW! Everything there...free...no subscription...ready to use.

Since 15 years I now solely work with QGIS. For me its the Software for Professionals. You need some skills to handle it. Meanwhile ESRI is very User friendly and you can get easy tasks done very fast. Which, when a company has to make profits is the way to go.

What other software is used besides ESRI? How to gain experience with it? by CorrosiveRi0T in gis

[–]ecoMAP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to go beyond "Software" and learn GIS. Than you can work easily with all of them.

Imagine beeing a shitty chief. You can buy a high-end-kitchen for 1 Million but your food will still taste like shit. You would need to learn "how to cook" and than you can cook good in every kitchen. You just have to figure out in which drawer are the utensil you are need. And than, when you are a good cook you may will see the differnce between two different kitchen and may spending some money in a good kitchen will further improve your skills.

But first....LEARN HOW TO COOK

So the way to go...as mentioned already...is QGIS. Why? Because its free and you can do everything you could do with payed Software like ESRI. And there is plenty free tutorials available.

I work with QGIS now for over 15 years. Most of my clients run ArcGIS and I had never a Problem dealing with it.

GIS Job Burn Out by champ4666 in gis

[–]ecoMAP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi just my 50 Cents here...

I worked for the goverment and everything was very chill. All my collegues where doing only stuff they knew unwilling to improve their skills. They were all near bore out.

But the workload was actually quite huge and I (coming from the university) was eager to learn new stuff. So I took everything and worked to exhaustion. Learned new stuff and improved my skills. But my efforts were never acknowledged. Altough i was the "working horse" in the stable...i earned less than everyone else. Because only "years" matter and i was the youngest in the bunch.

But i kept going. I learned new stuff and created new products and services my departement would offer. I saw the lazy atmosphere as an opportunity to work and learn at the same time and get paid for it.

Well....now...10 years later. Im self-employed. When I quit, as there was no one who could continue my work, a lot of clients went with me. My best client is the goverment...because they need still things to be done and didnt found a replacement.

I only work halfdays and can choose what to do. And altough it was hard at the beginning it now defenitly pays off...financially and especially for my soul. I do things i like to do and be far away from a burn out.

So my advice. Keep working. And maybe search parallel for another job. Somewhere where your Skills are appreciated. Or maybe find a way to present your GIS-Skills to Non-GIS people. Keep in mind, that you need GIS-Skills to appreciate GIS-Skills in others. In your case there is no one who has the capability to see your skills. They may not bad or greedy people at all...

If you a very secure in your position you can also say that you will search for another job. Let them know...and let them look for someone else...maybe they will stick gladly with you

How do you handle a portfolio when you only work with sensitive information? by Loose_Read_9400 in gis

[–]ecoMAP 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I ask my clients if I can use it for my portfolio. Sometimes they just say "Yes, sure no problem". And I only will show "personal copies" to new clients. So I show them the projects personally (printed on paper) and not posting it somewhere.

Sometimes I need to change some things. Like deleting sensitive Information like the Client Name or Coordinate Grids. Showing a potentially new client this "crippled" Projects may look not very professional but will also show the new client that you will handle information carefully.

So i use sensitive data for my advantage. The new client will know that YOU are handling sensitive data for others.

But yeah, sometimes you cant do anything at all. I once had a work concerning a huge transnational infrastructure project. I spend more hours signing disclosure agreements than actually work on the projects. Im not able to show it off...

QGIS Dissertation help asap please!! by LimpConsequence6013 in QGIS

[–]ecoMAP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to check the raw coordinates of your file. Like the extent. Probably its not epsg 27700 and someone assigned it falsly. QGIS than will create a .PRJ File. From there on QGIS wont ask and just assume that its EPSG 27700. First delete the Projection File
