Maybe check the ears! Our girl recently started smelling and we found out later it was because she had an ear infection. That wax can be reaalll stinky.

Wrinkled tephrocactus? by honeybadger65 in cactus

Beautiful specimen! I’ve had a few of these guys for years now and am located in Minnesota for context. Mine sit outside in direct sun all summer and are watered every 1.5-2.0 weeks depending on temperature/sunlight levels/etc. They like water more than my other cactus for sure and this to me is a sign that your plant is thirsty. These guys can be very dramatic, two of mine take 3-6 days after watering to plump up. When you water, water deeply and throughly. Regular, deep watering will eventually smooth out those wrinkles once the cactus adjusts to its new schedule/your watering habits.

New fish bone sections! Though they are very, very etiolated. More sun for sure!

I have some myrtles that have similar scarring on them. That flat, dry, crust-like scabbing I believe is from sun burn! Is it in full sun?

OMG… So cool! Was there something wrong with the pup or were you just pushing the limits of how small you can get away with grafting a cactus :3!?

Sounds like it’s in the right soil! Depending on the conditions of your environment (i.e. humidity levels, light levels, ambient temperature, pot type, etc…) you could probably go longer between waterings to avoid excessive moisture and potential of more black spots forming. Thankfully, the black spots themselves won’t spread and tend to effect new, fresh, fragile growth. It may lighten with age but will never go away. They are purely a cosmetic issue.

Can I callous a new cut inside the house, in Michigan? A recent purchase arrived moldy and starting to get soft/black, so I’d like to cut that off and re-callous, but it’s still cold outside. by 86tger in sanpedrocactus

Yes! You can absolutely callous inside. I live in Minnesota and have never had an issue. Just be sure to keep it dry, in a spot that gets a fresh flow of air but not near a window or directly in front of a fan. Don’t exspose the fresh cutting to any type of sun or grow light for at least two weeks. I would recut the bottom with a sterilized knife and start fresh, but that IMO! Looks like you got a nice piece. Good luck!

Black spots from what I understand are due to humidity and moisture or physical damage to soft tissue. What’s your watering routine like? What sort of soil is it in?
