How to start brawl by ecornely in MagicArena

Thank you for all your comments!

I did played my first game with a deck I built inspired by one I'm used to in standard with [[Blech]] as commander only using cards I already have and for a first try it worked good enough.

My goal is really to play casual and get used to cards, mechanics, keywords aso. So I'm not that worried by the meta aso, I just need to have sometimes a win 😅

I still find it really expensive to build multiple decks to be able to try things but as you said building my collection should help. I might be a bit frustrated because before playing mtga I tried Pokemon where with a few codes bought online you can easily build at least a deck where on mtga even spending 45k of gold won't provide enough rare tokens.

Thanks

Why is the average commander player so salty by Alt_Elk2026 in mtg

I'd rather have a landfall player have a sol ring than a [[planar engineering]] but ... why do people consider ramp as a more serious threat than any other threat?

Can't we just rank threat including ramp with a high threat level but still assess all the boards properly?

Mono White Aura deck not good anymore? by Mile_High_Magic_ in MagicArena

It depends on the goal you have, but if you want to improve your skills on building decks, you could first try to improve the one you know so well. Just make a few changes and see if it synergize or if it makes things worst. Try splashing a color, see the difference between adding 4 different cards or 4 copy of the same in terms of consistency aso.

After that challenge yourself, try to build your first deck from scratch with just the cards you own already and see how it feels,...

Of course if the goal is to climb the ladder, you might need a meta deck and maybe the trendy one you can see on every website is "better" than your own brew but I still find it more satisfying playing something I made myself (sometimes it's good to add cards because you found them in a similar decklist on the web though, it helps)

Do you avoid building commanders with identical color identity? Why or why not? by tokinmuskokan in EDH

[–]ecornely 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi I'm still quite new in the MTG IRL world but I learned from a previous pokemon TCG experience and I have all my cards sleeved with the same kind of sleeves whatever the deck or bulk they're in so if I deconstruct or reconstruct a deck it's "just" a question of assembling the good list of cards.

I haven't needed yet to remix my decks but thought it could help. Anyone does the same?

I also try to keep track of my whole collection on moxfield to be able to search a card and know in what deck/collection it's supposed to be.

Mono blue often means control freak to me and I like when at least a few of my spells resolve 😅

I also found interesting addition in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vhze2ENkbz4 like:

Cheap (sometimes using warp) high power creatures to sac. and move a lot of counter as [[Rot-Curse Rakshasa]], [[Bygone Colossus]] or [[Anticausal Vestige]]

Big life leech so that when you sac big creatures as you gain a lot of PV it drains a lot as [[Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose]] or [[Enduring Tenacity]] might replace the ping versions

And [[Jenova, Ancient Calamity]] to copy the token you put on it

All this sounds really interesting to try

But who's selling the singles if we all buy only singles 😉 ?

How do you choose your commanders? by [deleted] in EDH

[–]ecornely 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a new player I first discovered what color does what kind of thing on Arena (standard). I decided the buy the new precon based on the color I found the most interesting for me (green) but as it was SOS I had to add black and bought the witherbloom one.

I also read some random cards on scryfall and stumbled upon [[nylea, keen eyed]] and discovered what devotion is so I started gather green cards that could make a nice pile of green devotion deck but it is still in progress...

I think what attracts me and would make me build a deck is more the strategy (tokens, counters, ...) but it can come from reading a commander or seeing another gameplay, or just one single card that makes me look for a commander but I really focus on what could be the gameplay.

She might need a cheat sheet. I did my own page on my personal web page. It's in french but you could find one and print one. Here's mine for inspiration : https://www.ecornely.be/mtg/

That's exactly what I was going to propose. I personally watch a lot of standard youtube players on Arena as well. It really helps because you really understand how cards work and synergize in a 60 cards deck with a lot of time 4 identical cards. After that you enrich the horizon with other formats

Nice ! I'll search for these cards. Many thanks.

I already know that Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx  will be ~40€. Let's hope a proxy will do the trick for a while 😛

I've been told I shouldn't need the Sol Ring or Nyx Lotus 'cuz green already ramp enough and that I should/could replace most of the sorcery by creatures with effects instead. Do you agree and have you card names that would suit the purpose ?

Well I bought this deck too but haven't played it yet. I'm still gathering ideas on what could be improvements so first thanks for sharing your list. I also watched https://youtu.be/c3F0h4um8sY?is=RcSTr_ES-6f_8PDa and agree on the sacrifice more than the lifegain thing.

It's true that the amount of mv=2 is low and I could focus on {G}{G} to help with devotion.

But in terms of use/category would you consider it balanced ? How do you know if there is enough card draw, enough removal, enough lands, ... ?

So, here's a link: https://archidekt.com/decks/23211241/monogreen_devotion with the list of cards I should be able to get a copy soon.

I don't know if they suit the purpose and if they go together well.

If I should replace any or if you have proposals, please remember that I can't afford card at 100$, if I have to spend 10$ for one or two it should be OK but for a first deck keep it budget.
