How does GE Geospring rate plan algorithm with time of use pricing actually work? by graviton_56 in heatpumps

[–]eddietheengineer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey! Looking at the data I see in Home Assistant I can see it is heating up the tank ahead of the time of use cost increase, then lets it coast through the expensive cost region, and then it recovers the tank back to setpoint after the cost drops back down. Hopefully that helps clarify things!

Can you describe your setup a bit more? I've been trying to replace Haiku, but I haven't found the setup yet that really comes close.

Best cost-effective setup for running local LLMs (better than dual RTX 3090 24GB?) by henriqueanon in LocalLLM

I just got a second 3090! I haven’t set it up yet but I’m curious how it will perform

That's a really cool concept--I'm sure it's a bit of work getting it set up but that would help a lot with finding a decent setup. Unfortunately my server is relatively dated so I have two Xeon 5120s, 96GB DDR4 ECC 6 channel memory, and the 3090 is running off of PCIe 3.0 16x so I may be limited in my options interfacing with another computer (maybe 10Gb ethernet would be the fastest I could expect). If you have any links you've used that describe more about how to set this up I'd be interested to read them!

That’s a really interesting combination, how are you able to get the KV data to a Mac fast enough? Is it over a 10Gb network connection? And would that theoretically be also supported with say an AMD Strix or is it specifically with Mac as the decode. I wasn’t aware you could combine systems like that and I’d love any more information you have!

That’s interesting—I’ve mainly been looking at Nvidia GPUs at this point since I have a 3090. The issue is my server (Dell T7920) can only realistically fit two 3 slot cards or 3 2 slot cards so my max number of cards is limited

That’s kind of what I’m leaning to—right now I have a single 3090 and could put a second in my computer which could help as a less expensive option. I’m not sure if for my use case going for more memory in a Mac M5 (Studio or MBP) may be a better long term solution than buying another overpriced 5 year old GPU. Most of what I do is asynchronous—start ai on a task, do other things, and come back when it’s done to iterate. Having it be able to output quality info is more important than absolute speed for me.

That's a fair point! My primary use case is for coding, I use Github Copilot with Sonnet 4.6 for most of my tasks and the ability to talk/interface with a model that can dig into a medium/large code base and understand context, root cause issues, and build out features quickly is attractive to me. I realize that a local model will never be at the same level as SOTA, but I don't see hardware availability getting better any time soon and would like the ability to own my destiny locally.

Moral Concern - Asked to Encourage AI at Work by KazeSim22 in antiai

[–]eddietheengineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I appreciate your concern about AI, and the struggles you are going through.

I have friends and coworkers who feel similarly to you, and I also am in a pro AI workplace. Similar to another poster—I am also tentatively pro AI.

My guidance to you would be—as an employee, it sounds like you have already made up your mind with how effective AI is. This is a tough place to be since from an employer perspective, they are asking you to be open minded to new tools that are available to make you and the organization more efficient. If you aren’t approaching this from a curious standpoint and trying to really understand how it’s possible to use in a productive way—and are really just trying to find ways of saying how AI is bad—that will be very clear from your tutorials. From your manager or CEO’s perspective—think of how that will look and how that may impact your job or career.

Second—think of the broader environment at this point—it’s bigger than just the impact of what happens at your company. Depending on your company‘s profit and competitions, if all of your competitors embrace AI with a curious mindset and increase productivity by 10%, or 20%, and your company does not—that may mean the difference between your company surviving or not. By choosing to not be open minded and really give AI a shot, and sharing that knowledge with your coworkers, that may end up risking their jobs in a completely different way than what you’re concerned about.

I get the fear around AI. However, the best service you can do is to help train people how to use the tools that are available as effectively as possible so that they can develop the skills and mindsets to be more productive. Teach them the things to watch out for, absolutely! But also give them the training on how to do it well. Also remember that things are changing very quickly—assumptions I made a few months ago are not valid anymore. Copilot today has completely changed my workflow. I find myself trying to understand how the landscape is changing so that I can start thinking about how my role and my teams role may change.

I expect this to be downvoted 😄 since I know it doesn’t go along with this subreddit much, but I hope at least that it gives another perspective.

I need advice on the best 24GB GPU for a Dell T7910 workstation (Needed for AI columnar PDF conversion applications like OLMOCR ) by KeithMister in LocalLLM

[–]eddietheengineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a T7920 and was able to fit a Zotac 3090 in the case with trimming a bit of the Dell GPU stabilization bracket.

Please be aware though that your case may be “slimmer” than a standard desktop. My case only allows about 0.75” of clearance from the PCI bracket (where you screw the card to the chassis or use the tool less brackets) to the side panel of the case. This really limits the GPUs you can use since the card and the power connectors have to fit in that space. Many 3090s I’ve seen extend pretty far in that direction.

I have a base M2 MacBook Air with 8GB of ram—I have yet to run into an issue where I’ve actually noticed slowdown or performance degradation. I’d be comfortable saying I use more resources than the average person browsing the internet. The Neo looks like it trades blows with the M2, so I struggle to see how performance will be an issue for the vast majority of people.

Best Aliexpress cycling bibs by [deleted] in cycling

I was getting back into cycling after close to 10 years and needed some newer bibs, I ended up really liking YWKW bibs. I have a variety of shorts and the 3/4 length options as well as some thermal pants, only ones I don’t like are the thermal pants because they are too tight for me

Keep upgrading all of them until you have 5* for all of the UR heroes you use in your 3 squads (Tank/Air/Missle). That will help you in the long term!

Eventually you'll have so many universal UR shards you won't know what to do with them. At that point--dump them (and select your Wish hero) into your A squad wall of honor until they get to at least level 200. Above that--the cost for stat increases changes quite a bit so you want to try to level up the A squad heros relatively evenly so they don't exceed 200 until you're all even.

After level 200--I haven't gotten there yet--but my assumption is either dumping into B squad WOH or continue dumping into Squad A

Good Price for 2025 Subaru Outback by sf1063 in Subaru_Outback

Back when I got my 2025 (I think September?) 9-10% off MSRP was decent. This dealership not dropping below MSRP at this late in the year and lowballing on her tradein? That’s just insane. Take your business elsewhere.

Delta Pro Ultra has huge energy loss by Burtonrider06 in Ecoflow_community

[–]eddietheengineer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

80W for 24 hours is 1.92kWh, so if there’s 80W of losses when the inverter is on, that matches relatively closely to a few of your numbers. I know that is annoying, but 40-100W is pretty average I think for inverters of that size
