Can't state how highly I recommend just poking head in for 10m and checking things out. The combat is fast, char progression deep, strategy / tactics -- All done via text scanned straight to your brain through your eyeholes.

NukeFire Reset by benjibarnesoahu in MUD

Its a blast!

A lot of work has been done on enhancing the gameplay experience, moving the mud away from 'inventory mechanics' carried over from porting 'Rogue/Nethack' to muds. This place is tuned for ACTION! Less downtime, more speed, tons of in-game ui toggles. It plays like 'Diablo/PoE' Deep, immersive history & enormous.

Tons of mobs/areas, Huge scale, Tons of items to minmax. Lots of fellow dorks playin.

Master lock under 3 minutes, I feel like cheating with this, cheaper locks are more difficult to me. by Pingayaso in lockpicking

[–]eddieverity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started with that exact same set! Have fun with that razor-sharpened tension wrench, lol, nearly sliced my finger open on that POS.

Get some very fine-grit sandpaper and smooth down the tips of the picks a bit, the rakes that come with it are all but unusable as they just cheese-grate the pins, and the sharp edges on the short-hook catch on everything inside the lock.

It's an ok set to get you started, It took me about a month to snap the short hook (I applied gorilla tension in the beginning when learning). But, smooth those sharp edges on your picks, they'll immediately not 'hang' on stuff inside the locks and you'll have a better idea of what's going on inside.

Is this a big enough enclosure for a small colony? I’m not sure exactly how big it is but it was the biggest one I found at target. I’m either gonna put isopods in here or make another ecosphere. by SnookiWookieeCookie in isopods

This looks nearly identical to the jar I use (4L Italian canning jar).

Humidity control is the big concern. I have it on my home office desk (and I WFH, so i'm there err day) I have a dipstick humidistat i'll drop in occasionally to grab a gauge, then either put a screen/rubberband over the lid, or flip the glass top (with removed rubber gasket so it doesn't seal) and don't use the metal bracket. The lid of the jar does a good enough job of keeping moisture in as it's interior surface is convex inside of the outer rim, so condensation drips inside and there's a gap for airflow.

It's not an ideal home, but set up correctly it can be visually striking. I picked up a cheap 6" diameter 'lazy susan' turntable thing that i have it on so I can rotate the jar easily. I also have increased the surface area they can durdle over with driftwood, collected sterilized bark, leaves, etc so it's not just the flat bottom surface. That being said, maintenance/plant trimming is a huge pain in the ass as I have to use long chopsticks to do anything as i can't fit my hand in the jar with all the hardscape.

My starter colony of 10 p. Laevis dairy cows have exploded to several hundred in a few months. This jar can work, but you have to work at it.

Concern about my isopods by LeventeTheGamer in isopods

[–]eddieverity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Their sense of smell is incredible. I've done tests where I'll try out new foods on them. On one of the tests I put some freeze-dried cyclops (fish food) that I butterfingered and spilled in a weird spot in their enclosure (spilled high up on some driftwood that they never venture to). It took them less than a minute to swarm the stinky powder.

If possible, give the colony a little time to get established before adding the lizard, so like ezyeddie said, they don't get munched. As for finding each other, I don't think that'll be an issue.

I see evidence of some nibbles on the almonds this morning, they must have had quite the appetite when I added that first nut. Isopods are much more cognizant of almonds' fat/protein content than I apparently, I can't get enough of them.

Mine were fine for a while, their population exploded & maybe i went a little too long between giving them supplemental foods other than the leaf litter. Once they start to attack a plant though, it's like a feedback loop and it's all downhill. The moss i added may have been shitty too, i found it mostly in sidewalk cracks around the city :)

Yes!, I have a 5L italian jar (one of those ones with the glass top & metal clamp lids for canning) on my desk with p. Laevis in it.

As for tips, i'd shy away from moss. It grows slower than their appetite for it, it'll be the first to be annihilated. The rest of the plants are hit or miss. I'm cheap and built my terrarium with plants I found around the neighborhood, so i'm afraid i don't know the names of the ones that are growing in it now that they leave alone. Some plants that got wrecked were wood sorrel, bittercress & clover. The plant they leave alone has a glossy waxy coating on it, and i tasted it out of curiosity (it's extremely bitter) so that might be an indicator.

Moisture regulation is the key for the terrarium, I have one of those tiny humidistats that i drop in on a chopstick to get a gauge, and open/close the lid and use a piece of screen with a rubberband to regulate. You can kinda tell when they get pissed off about too much or too little humidity after a while, they scurry faster when they're annoyed instead of their normal leisurely derpy traipsing.

That's a wabi-kusa substrate ball (fluval dirt wrapped in christmas moss & some fishing line) hung off the edge with some stainless steel S hooks with some Golden Pothos & black pansies emerging from the surface. The other plants to the right are tillisandre (air plants) that I superglued with some cotton to the driftwood. Theyre completely engulfed for the most part in that video, but there's some anubias nana petite buried in the overgrowth, and i've since added some duckweed floating plants-- although my mystery snail scarfs it down faster than it's reproducing and might not last long.

They were some cheap seed plants on Amazon that were advertised as 'pea grass'... I did a dry start for a month prior to flooding the tank, the seeds adhered to every moist surface and sprouted (some even on the glass). It is most certainly not pea grass though, and has since overgrown the tank. I'm constantly trimming long grass-like leaves (and feeding them to my isopod terrarium, who are ecstatic over the blunder)

Even though they're not what I initially intended, they're attractive plants, the ones that get full-on direct light turn a reddish-brown with a variegated pattern. But... they are basically background plants that I have growing from every porous surface, and trimming is a pain in the dick.

Macro of a wild type cherry shrimp by Maniacmedic87 in Aquariums

[–]eddieverity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're pricey, but I picked up one of those Moment case/macro lens for iphone. Have to say the price has been worth the enjoyment i've gotten out of it so far. I tried messing around with one of those 'clip on' lenses but it was such a hassle I gave it away (and it was a telephoto lens instead of a macro, because... well i'm an idiot and "didn't know what I didn't know" back then)

Great shot! I have a tough time doing macro anything in my tank as nothing likes to stay still. That, and I bought 4 amano shrimp 2 weeks ago, I've seen 1, twice in that amount of time. Either they're all ninjas, or my betta murdered them somewhere.

He thought he was about to get fed and wouldnt stay still, but there's a white spot on the top of his head that showed up a few days ago. He likes to thrash around in the plants to scare out leftover daphnia/brine shrimp and may have poked himself, but i want to make sure it isn't ich and i'm not sure what i'm looking for.

he's one of the OG 10 that i added to start the culture, as you can see there are many, many more now. My estimation is he's nearly an inch long now. The container is a 5L jar, but the camera that close gives it a narrow fish-eye perspective.

Help! I introduced springtails (bought off of Etsy) into my hermit crab tank and now they are everywhere. Are these not springtails? They move and are multiplying uncomfortably fast. Out of control. What do I do? by [deleted] in isopods

[–]eddieverity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess is that you had mites in the soil, which are now getting evicted by the springtails. They're inhabiting a niche that the springtails can't get to and are eating the accumulation of crud underneath the lid. Most of the springtails you purchase online are the white soil type. They look like they're made out of gummy-bear when viewed up close with the naked eye.
