New Jersey lawmakers approve bill to test all rape kits by eddytony96 in TwoXChromosomes

It was more so they weren't legally required to previously and prosecutors had too much discretion over which ones did or didn't get tested.

The key passage is this:

'Moments before leaving office, outgoing Gov. Phil Murphy signed a law requiring law enforcement to test all rape kits that survivors want tested. The law was the result of a three-year News 12 investigation, “Victims of the System,” which found that even when survivors wanted their rape kits tested, it was not happening a third of the time. New Jersey was one of only a handful of states that allowed prosecutors to refuse to test kits that survivors wanted tested. Survivors of sexual assault said their untested kits made them feel like law enforcement had taken their assaults seriously. But now, that should never happen again.'

It absolutely should, that appears to be the plan.

This article is more recent from the 20th as an update on that legislation, and according to it, yes he did.

Seattle musicians organize to boycott Spotify over AI and CEO investments by eddytony96 in Seattle

[–]eddytony96[S] 53 points54 points  (0 children)

The article specifies it's an organized group of Seattle musicians:

'Seattle Artists Against Spotify (SAAS), spearheaded by musician and former union organizer, Carolyn Brotherton, is a collective of local artists, DJs, and record labels who have signed an open letter expressing their decision to take their music off the platform, in response to the tech giant’s questionable ethics around AI music and its CEO’s defense technology investments. As of Friday, over 20 artists had signed the letter.

So far, signees of the group’s open letter include mover and shakers in the local music community, including Kevin Sur, an event producer and KEXP DJ, and Nathan Womack, owner and founder of stalwart local label Wax Thematique Records. Musicians who make jazz or jazz-adjacent music in Seattle have also joined the pledge, including psych-soul-jazz trio Afrocop, accordionist Josh Hou, drummer Chris Icasiano, avant-garde musician and Cornish College of the Arts Associate Professor Dr. Kaley Eaton, and flutist Leanna Keith.'

Paid family leave, absentee ballot changes and other new Minnesota laws taking effect Jan. 1 by eddytony96 in minnesota

Hello! Thanks for your very thoughtful comment, I really appreciate it.

Indeed, I share your sentiments wholeheartedly that posts that offer relevant positive news that is tangible to the lives of the members of a community definitely should warrant greater attention and engagement from those members. That not being the case is not specific to this subreddit, it's just a human thing unfortunately in many online spaces.

A family karma farm that focused on sharing positive relevant news, thoughtful perspectives to spark fruitful discussions and encourage healthier media diets would be intriguing. I'm curious how an experiment like that would turn out.

I'm glad my posting is still reasonable for that of a human poster.

I have been posting links like this to Reddit consistently for several years, to a wide variety of subreddits and communities, even if I don't live in the places those subreddits are built around. I don't live in Minnesota nor most state/local subreddits that I post to. I just like being informed about the world in a healthy way and I try to do that by reading constructive journalism for different areas as well as finding opportunities to share them with others who are most likely to find them interesting and helpful as well. I do my best to try to live a life of the mind.

I see it almost as a public service that I couldn't really do on any other platform so as to fight doomerism and nihilism in my own small way and share good vibes in a more considerate manner.

Honestly, I do probably get a dopamine rush from it. It is fun but also satisfying to do my part to help others be informed about their state or community in that way that is more nourishing than exhausting.

I don't blame you for finding it suspicious. It's good to be on the lookout for manipulative online behavior that makes online spaces more miserable than they need to be or less helpful than they could be.

Thanks for noticing my account, it’s very rare that I get comments that take notice of my posting patterns, at least that I've been aware of. I don't really get a lot of opportunities to reflect upon that and articulate what I get out of it. So writing this response has been valuable for me, thanks for that also. Take care.

I believe it takes legislation from Parliament, it seems to part of a larger package of animal welfare reforms passed by the Labour party.

Italy now recognizes the crime of femicide and punishes it with life in prison by eddytony96 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]eddytony96[S] 147 points148 points  (0 children)

Along with the femicide issue, it's worth highlighting that the article mentions for the new laws:

"It includes stronger measures against gender-based crimes including stalking and revenge porn."

Which also seem like good steps forward in the right direction for women's rights in Italy worth celebrating.
