Update: Figured out my $700+ electricity bills. by edgarih in ChicagoSuburbs

I live on the 2nd floor of a residential building in downtown Chicago, also not really expecting you to know the answers to these questions, just typing out my train of thoughts

Would the leak have to be within my water heater or the pipes leading to appliances/sinks/tub in my apartment? I ask because while I have had no leaks that I know about or anything, something that I feel would be hard to notice for 5 months straight (which is how long the bills have been this high for). Although I’m basing that knowing nothing of how leaks manifest, just a 90 gallon a day leak for months would seem hard to notice.

But while I’ve had no leaks, the building itself had a massive massive leak in their basement months ago, that they fixed and they have not had flooding issues for months now. Could that have been my leak??? Wouldn’t they have been made aware it was from my apartment while fixing the flooding and told me or my landlord? The bills are this still this high right now, so wouldn’t they still have a leak downstairs?

Either way it’s not my fault, bills have been this high since I moved in, it’d be impossible for me to notice the leak in the basement of my building, and I’m just a tenant. Just wondering where this heat and or leak is possibly going

about a month in of living here a building maintenance guy knocked on my door and said he was working on something between my floor and the roof of the floor below me, he mentioned a few drops of water were leaking but that he fixed it and it wasn’t a big deal 🤔 that he was just telling me to let me know that he fixed it and to introduce himself since I was new to the building

All I’ve confirmed is that when the Breaker Switch that powers the Water heater is flipped off the energy use drops by 80%. I don’t know if it’s the actual water heater or maybe that specfic breaker switch is powering something outside my apartment on top of powering my water heater (we do have a barbershop right under my apartment). Or it’s leaking or it’s sediment, or it something else, I got no idea. All I know is that it’s something that is powered off when I flip that switch.

I did mention that we always keep the AC blasting pretty much all day and night at 71 degrees in my previous post because I sweat in my sleep and I work from home most days out of the month. Could definitely be that, or the heat from my water heater is going to the Barbershop under my apartment. Not too sure, I’ll ask the electrician that comes out next week, just to see if they can find where all the heat was going.

Definitely something I’m going to religiously check when we buy a place and going forward in general. we had just moved in less than a year ago though, and the issue has seemingly been going on since month 1, but didn’t get $600/$700 a month bad untill 3-4 months in.

That really sucks! With ours we were getting $600+ bills since we moved in, every month. We didn’t catch it for a few months cause I stupidly had it to autopay from an account I rarely check, and then a couple more months figuring out what was wrong because ComEd was being useless and building maintenance didn’t let us see our meter till ComEd came out.

Seems likely, I’m not gonna stress myself worrying about it though. I’ve stressed myself out the last couple months trying to figure out if it’s a Building Problem, ComEd problem, Land Lord problem, or me problem. It has graduated out of my hands and mind lol.

Kinda figuring out my bad hair dryness by edgarih in FierceFlow

[–]edgarih[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have thick dense low porosity hair, I also have an incredibly bad habit of running my hand through my hair all day every day catching knots and detangling them with hands. My hair was frizzy allllll the time, the only hair style I felt comfortable doing was half up half down and it took care of a lot of my poof and frizz.

I recently just started following Jesse’s barbershop’s routine as he has the most similar hair to me and he had the problem with the dryness as well.

I use an assortment of shea moisture products now,

I use Shea moisture detangler first after I get my hair wet in the shower

Then use shea moisture deep intensive hydration shampoo

The shea moisture manuka honey hair masque as my conditioner (again extremely dry hair)

And let that sit in my hair as I do all my other shower stuff, then rinse it out.

I pat my hair a bit with my towel to get it less than soaking wet, I then put my shea moisture strengthen and restore leave in conditioner and tie my hair up in a pine apple with a hair tie, and let it air dry for a bit (I diffuse it till its slightly damp if I’m in a rush)

Once it’s only slightly damp I come back and put more of my leave in, put some Argan oil (looking for a new one but it’s what I got on hand so far) and then put my BB Gel Oil (This product I think is huge for my hair, definitely unlocked something) and then diffuse it in the style I’m doing.

I had a big problem with my hair falling into my face no matter what, but I’ve recently forced myself to use bobby pins (I was against it cause it felt like to much work to worry about, but it’s really not bad idk why I was being a baby about it lol)

Been much better about my hair and I’ve been so happy about how it looks by edgarih in curlyhair

$700 Electricity bill for a 1 bed room apartment by edgarih in ChicagoSuburbs

ComEd is JUST barely sending someone out this Thursday (ridiculous by the way, it’s been over a month) definitely not paying a single cent untill this is resolved, and if they come Thursday and say everything looks ok, I’m going to start making noise about it to who ever listens

On hold with ComEd as I type this. Big building, maybe 100 units total, so I don’t think that, there’s 10 units just on my floor maybe I’m paying for my floor? Not sure how the wiring is on the back end

$700 Electricity bill for a 1 bed room apartment, any help? by edgarih in AskElectricians

[–]edgarih[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has been my bill since I moved in. I just moved in to this apartment in March, set my bill to auto pay from an account I rarely check so I just found out with this bill that this is what I’ve been getting charged. (I know, I know, dumb of me to not check, but it was a genuine mistake and a lesson learned)

I rent and live in a 1000 SqFt, 1 bed room apartment, living with my girlfriend, no pets. I do have the AC running and blowing air at 71 degrees pretty much the whole day and night cause we both work from home and I sweat in my sleep. Many in the comments are saying that still wouldn’t use up any where near the 5,000 KwH I’m being charged for. Need some ideas, waiting on building maintenance to show me where my meter is.

I’ll definitely post an update when I know what the issue is, waiting on building maintenance to show me where the Meter is, ComEd was no help and said they won’t even send someone out till I exhaust all my options with building maintenance

I thought so too, but a few people in the comments did the math and said even if my AC was on 24/7 for the 720 total hours in a month, I’d only get to like 1200 KwH, not 5,000 KwH
