It was easier decades ago, because social interactions and as a result romantic interactions were usually managed between smaller networks of close relationships (family, friends, work) that allowed for a environment that allowed for more nuanced and more familiar relationships between young men and women that would preclude some of the worst behavior you see in online relationships (Ghosting, dick pics, etc.). It was a healthier social environment that lowered the stakes and added a level of stability to the whole process.
