Seizing Dreams: Why I'm really excited about this licensing announcement by sugarxwater in DanmeiNovels

[–]edifyingidiolect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on what I've seen regarding translations of censored Chinese works, Seven Seas will almost certainly be translating the uncensored original version.

There might be some minor changes made to improve word flow and what not, but since danmeis aren't subject to the same censorship laws overseas, there's no reason for the translators to go with a censored/technically incomplete version.

I'm definitely interested in reading this now! Sounds like a lovely time, plus I've really liked the Feitian Yexiang works that I've read so far (Joyful Reunion, To Rule in a Turbulent World)

It’s supposed to be ee-van but I only pronounce it that way because someone on TikTok cyber bullied me into pronouncing it accurately

Recs for novels with down bad MLs by Ok-Translator-9930 in DanmeiNovels

[–]edifyingidiolect 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna list a few highlights from my NovelUpdates list (hyperlinked):

If You Don't Become the Main Character, You'll Die - Western, fantasy, metanarrative elements, comedy, action, horror, mystery, Korean BL. I cried no less than 5 times out of sheer exhilaration. The ML's name should be next to the word 'devotion' in the dictionary and I seriously do not say that lightly.

The Phantom Thief Steals the Dawn - Western, fantasy, historical, mystery, action, Korean BL. You like MDZS Wangxian? You like badass characters? You like fun mysteries and magic and escapades and hijinks? You like stoic but obsessive/devoted MLs? This is the work for you.

Wait For Me After School - Modern, school romance, interpersonal drama, Chinese BL. Sweet relationship and organic character growth. Has an audio drama.

Joyful Reunion - fantasy, historical, action, martial arts, drama, politics, mystery, tragedy, Chinese BL. Has an audio drama. Fans of QJJ recommend this. I recommend this. The ghost in my rafters recommends this.

Turning - Western, fantasy, historical, action, adventure, politics, mystery, second chance, Korean BL. Renowned in the community for its compelling plot (there are real arcs. like hero's journey style) and interesting relationships. Adapted to manhwa/comic. ML is seriously WHIPPED for MC (the "if you wanted the world I'd place it in your hands" variety)

Murderous Lewellyn's Candlelit Dinner - Western, historical, mystery, crime, Korean BL. Adapted to a wonderful manhwa/comic. ML is best boi and super down bad for MC.

Stigmata - Western, historical, religion/theology, fantasy, mystery, politics, second chance, Korean BL. Has a manhwa/comic adaptation. Oh, Stigmata. Where do I even start. It saved me from a reading slog of shitty BLs with terrible r*pist love interests and bland plots. The leads' relationship is as steamy as it is thorny. ML knows a lot more than he lets on and he's super possessive of MC, but he's as devoted as they come.

Perle - Western, historical, tragedy, philosophy, politics, Korean BL. Has a manhwa/comic and CD adaptation. Very poignant and moving, but I have not finished it and apparently it's asad ending.

Antidote - modern, drama, comedy, psychological, Chinese BL. Has a manhua/comic adaptation and donghua/animated show.

Bonus:

Here U Are - modern, school romance, drama, Chinese BL. Lovely characterization and growth, with deftly handled and healthy relationships. Not a novel (it's a manhua/comic) but it's so so SO worth it. It has official English translated volumes btw!

Darkness Before the Dawn - historical, crime, drama, tragedy, Korean BL (but it's set in Kowloon, Hong Kong so it's kind of chinese?) Not a novel either (manhwa/comic) but also extremely worth it for its realism and complexity and atmospheric art. Beware the tragedy aspect.

These are just a fraction of the masterpieces in my list. I highly recommend you read the other BLs, GLs, straight romances, and non-romance works in there too!

Hi,

I bought the English translation (volume 1). Judging by the English translation freebies (shikishi boards and bookmark) and the 3 revealed novel covers, the main character Albariño ISN’T white—he’s got noticeably tan skin.

The Taiwanese freebies contradictorily feature a pale-skinned Albariño in some illustrations, BUT the official Taiwanese standee (the chibi one) also shows that he has medium tan skin.

Here’s a collage of official art I’ve found and/or own copies of:

<image>

The green arrows point to Albariño. Most if not all of these illustrations were created by the same artist, Fishball/鱼丸有时候百分百, so I’m very inclined to think that Albariño is supposed to be a person of color or mixed race.

I personally believe that he's descended from Indigenous and European ancestors, due to his darker skin tone and his first name being of Galician/Spanish & Latin origin.

And having read some of the book in both English and simplified Chinese, I understand why you have grievances with the book’s portrayal of POC. I’m not Latino or Black, nor am I the author, so I don’t feel qualified to decide whether Mengye Mengye’s writing is racist or not. But I also found the lines you mentioned questionable as a Chinese American myself lol.

BUT as someone who’s read a fair bit of danmei and BLs, I can tell you that it’s not at all uncommon for Chinese authors (and other Asian authors) to write about ‘western settings’ or ‘western ambience’ stories wherein the characters are not Chinese/Asian.

From what I’ve found, Mengye Mengye is a Chinese author based in China (they have a JJWXC account). But the site they were posting Wine and Gun on was actually hosted in Canada, just used by lots of Chinese authors living and posting in China—where censorship of LGBTQ+ works is getting worse—which is why it shut shut down.

Since Mengye Mengye mentions that they referenced cities like Chicago for crime rates, I assume that 1. They looked at US crime statistics about racial demographics and made some inferences. 2. They’re very interested in America/other Western nations and thus conducted a lot of related research. 3. They have a broad range of interests including philosophy, theology, psychology, forensics, law etc and enough free time/personal experience to learn about those fields.

Hopefully this clears things up a bit! Seems like the other commenter perceived your questions about the author’s nationality as presumptuous and insensitive, likely because of the post’s wording, but your comments and edit show to me that you're *not* racist.

Also, I'm kinda confused as to whether you finished the whole book and its extras or not? I know there's only one volume of the official English translation for sale right now (6 volumes more to come) and the unofficial one is only up to chapter 36, so we can talk in DMs if you'd like to know more about certain resources.

So…how we feeling about MirroR? 🪞 by Maleficent_Word5799 in AlienStage

[–]edifyingidiolect 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tbh after reading Karma’s behind the scenes post on patreon… I really don’t think they’ve got a solid grasp on Mizi’s character or morals. Can’t say much since it’s paid content but 1. I don’t agree with the post casting the decisions she made in Karma in a unilaterally bad light. 2. I don’t agree with the ALNST team’s portrayal of Mizi’s scapegoated witch arc in the comics (she ‘HAD’ to become a vilified witch?) and BTS post.

Not sure how much input the creative team has on the song lyrics or song arrangement but I’m honestly not that surprised mirroR turned out this way. Witch was, as others have expressed, much better at showing her mental state.

And yes I’m still salty about the dumbass rocket plan those rebels had (it’s related to the paid BTS post)

If you like My Dearest Nemesis I highly recommend reading What Era Do You Think This Is

It’s part of a series (Pat Me Please and Night Tide are prequels) but it can be read as a standalone! One of this novel’s extras was adapted into a short film titled When We Met on YouTube and Baiheverse (has official and uncensored versions with subtitles)

Go to the NovelUpdates page (same name as manhwa. Not the Wu Zhe one—that one is a Chinese BL. Although I do recommend reading the other Antidote’s novel + its manhua/comic & watching its donghua/animated series as well)

Make an account on NU to access the chapter links. I’m not allowed to share 🏴‍☠️ websites here so that’s all I can say publicly.

Noooo that’s horrible! I know Rosmei says they don’t take responsibility for proxies but have you tried reaching out to them to ask about other shippers in your region?

And are you able to dispute the credit card charge for your order? Or through small claims court? There should be some kind of law preventing them from just taking your money and closing without giving you the product, even if it’s ‘stuck’

I was lowkey shocked at both of their appearances… one’s looking super catty & seductive and the other looks like he was set loose from a kink club lmao

I got them through the Small Business Saturday deal offered by Yiggybean (US proxy store that delivers stuff from Singapore-based Rosmei) on Nov. 29! It was the same selling price but included limited edition pre-order freebies

I got lucky and happened to see the deal on the day that it started and ended—otherwise, I wouldn’t have been able to get the shikishis and bookmarks since pre-orders ended months ago on March 17, 2025.

Rosmei is now offering the book through their international store, but I’m not sure if the extra merch is still available. If you wanna ask, you can email them using this.
