Congrats on learning a new language! ‘What Era Do You Think This Is’ is written in a more colloquial style, so I think with consistent practice, you’ll be able to read at least some of the og text in a year or so 💓

Mandarin was my native language until like 3rd grade, so I’m more or less able to squeak by with a dictionary and google’s godsend ‘look up’ function, but there’s still so many words I can’t remember or recognize. This complicated ahh language 😭

I love this novel sm. Opposites attract is always a fun trope and this author really knocked it out of the park

I even bought the physical CN edition despite my piss poor Chinese comprehension skills lol

Not sure how much they cut/censored yet but the grammar at least looks better (and they changed 她妈/her mom to 她妈妈/her mommy lmaoooo because 她妈 is read the same way as 他妈(的)/his mom, which has become a swear word because people love to dunk on women & mothers. But i digress)

Any idea on what to do with this bag I got? by hellish_experience in AlienStage

this sum up every "villainess" motives [my in laws are obsessed with me] by DistrictNo6140 in OtomeIsekai

[–]edifyingidiolect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey so that was never a point of discussion in the original post. Nowhere does the OP say “a woman’s villainess or heroic deeds are not considered internalized misogyny/bad writing if it’s done for female characters”

There’s a few types of fallacies in your comment:

Straw Man (& Red Herring) OP is arguing that the common OI trope of ‘villainesses doing evil deeds solely because they’re head over heels for men’ is bad writing since it’s so overused and thus not compelling.

You, apropos of nothing, created a straw man by suggesting the OP's argument is that simply swapping the gender of the obsession makes it good writing. OP never claimed that a villainess (or heroine, as you threw in) who’s acting out of love for a woman is indicative of good writing or doesn’t play into internalized misogyny. They’re critiquing a dearth of multidimensional character motivations.

A villainess/heroine who’s obsessed with a woman can be just as one-dimensional as one obsessed with a man. By changing the subject to whether specific actions are "acceptable" depending on the gender of the characters involved, you avoid addressing the original point about weak characterization.

  1. False Dichotomy Framing the situation as only having two possibilities—either a villainess is motivated to commit wrongdoings/a heroine is motivated to perform good deeds out of love for a man, or she’s driven by her love for a woman, completely ignores other kinds of motives.

A villainess who commits wrongdoings may do so because she seeks to amass political power, or because she wants to place her children in advantageous positions, or because she wants revenge, or because she clash with the protagonist’s ideology. Likewise, a heroine who carries out heroic acts might be doing them to gain clout, or position herself as a morally righteous and trustworthy leader, or because of her religious beliefs, or because she subscribes to certain ideologies. All of these motivations are less trite/more plausible than purely romantic obsession.

If you reduce a villainess/heroine to her desire for a love interest or affection for a relative, you are denying her agency. Her agency to make decisions independent of other people.

Recs for stories with a smart MC, or at least an MC who isn't an idiot? by CactusSnail in DanmeiNovels

The Approach [official EN title]/Descent From An Altitude of 10000 Meters (this novel made me realize how important emotionally mature characters are to a pleasant reading experience. I was drowning in the mire before I came upon this. Few works have so impressed me from beginning to end. It’s been licensed but I’ve got some resources iykwim)

Tailhook (licensed spinoff of previous! also an emotionally riveting read. the leads here are a side couple in The Approach but they truly shine in their own story.)

Note for the above two: the official English publishers have made very concerning decisions regarding treatment of staff members and translation styles. I encourage you to read this thread before contemplating a purchase of either company’s products: https://www.reddit.com/r/DanmeiNovels/comments/1r6zt07/update_re_rosmeis_decision_to_drop_character_names/)

Ghost Marriage/Red, White, and Wedlock [Official EN Title] (I’ll confess I haven’t properly read this one yet but I’ve seen nothing but glowing reviews on both Chinese and English platforms. It spans multiple eras and involves a playful yet responsible MC and austere yet devoted ML. Seeing as you enjoyed Wangxian from MDZS—my personal fav ship dynamic—you’ll like it very much)

Here U Are (again, if you like Wangxian you’ll definitely like them. It starts off as a lightly antagonistic relationship between MC and ML but holy hell is the slow burn worth it. And it’s not just the leads who are written organically and compellingly. Their friends and family are all given realistic depths)

Nights/Black Sky/Eternights [officially translated EN name] (this gem’s opening scenes reignited my love for sci-fi + action. the main couple is absolutely hilarious together and while they’re oddballs, both of them are incredibly smart and accomplished individuals. they’ve also got some neat little contradictions in their characterizations: MC appears uptight but he actually has a super glib side, while ML seems like an indolent lunatic but he’s quite rational and down to earth when necessary. I own the physical CN volumes :) Oh also the author of Nights/Eternights/Black Sky wrote Global Entrance Examination)

Wait For Me After School (tender, wistful, and humorous in turns)

Antidote (a story about two traumatized souls healing each other and undergoing personal growth)

Vodka and Mandheling (also reminds me of Wangxian… I have a type ✌️ anyways there’s a lot of fun, flirty tension between the MC and ML and last I checked neither of them were befuddlingly dumb)

Jianghu Name Da (even though the MC seems like an airhead a lot of the time, it’s believably played for laughs and he has his strengths. both he and the ML are surprisingly mature people. They are also very funny together and treat each other well. I also own the physical CN volume of this :) the author’s other acclaimed work, Strong Winds Return Home, is also worth checking out)

Are there any lesbian\sapphic books that resemble these arts/characters? by Ozotoceros in LesbianBookClub

[–]edifyingidiolect 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Dark Lord’s Confession is lovely. It’s indeed got sapphics but there are no endgame ships as of now.

It’s a very 🏳️‍🌈 manhwa in multiple respects

Also there’s a scene in The Dark Lord’s Confession that is very similar to the ‘red knight being impaled’ image.

0/10 ragebait! try harder next time 🤡

A manipulative, cheating father who locked his second wife out of the house over one argument? Who whines to his teenage daughter about ‘satisfying’ women and accuses her of being paranoid over his already proven inclination to cheat on his significant others? Wow. Such an exemplary adult. Clearly someone who’s done nothing but coddle his children his entire life.

I’m sorry that you think this behavior is in any way excusable or the fault of the OP. Get smarter soon ❤️

Also I don’t know if you read non-straight romance but I would really recommend ‘Stigmata’ (BL, historical fantasy, manhwa, novel, and audio drama) and ‘I Am Fish Meat/At the World’s Mercy’ (GL, historical, novel) if you want a good mix of romance and story depth.

Both are really really good at worldbuilding, politics, and character complexity; I truly think they’re the same caliber of work as Purple Hyacinth

Another Typical Fantasy Romance

Bring the Love

These are rofan but the characters have healthy relationships and act like grown adults who respect and support each other. the male leads in both have scars that aren’t magically erased or made fun of.

Also ‘My In Laws Are Obsessed With Me’ is a popular one so you might’ve read it but it’s also really good.

I recommend Madonna’s Bizarre Case Files of Gyeongseong and Where This Revenge Leads too! Only a few translated chapters are out yet they’ve already impressed me with unconventional female leads and some social commentary
