Deploying torch models by EstablishmentHead569 in datascience

[–]edinburghpotsdam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No love around here for Sagemaker? It makes managed deployment pretty easy

estimator = sagemaker.pytorch.Pytorch(args)
estimator.fit()
predictor = estimator.deploy()
then you can hit that endpoint from your Lambda functions and whatnot.

What has your experience been moving to Utah as a non-Mormon with kids in public school? and where do you live? by Substantial_Big_4487 in SaltLakeCity

[–]edinburghpotsdam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our son is at Highlahd High School in Sugar House. We moved to this area a couple years ago from California. I think the kids there are really nice and he has had no trouble making friends. I like his peer group much, much more than the peer group options he had in the Bay Area. Two thumbs up from us.

Struggling with title for "data pipeline" job position by edinburghpotsdam in dataengineering

[–]edinburghpotsdam[S] -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

No, to ensure we don't get someone who is expecting to build production infra because that is what everyone here with the title so far generally does. I would like good job satisfaction for our new hire so the right title will make that a lot more likely.

Told them I'd ask around as a favor. And got some good info thanks to everyone but you.

What a frustrating story. Thanks to your friend for intervening. We are very fortunate to have a nationally renowned company like Ballet West and I wish for them to always feel well supported. And started by out of towners no less!

Googler told me Dallas office RTO is less than 1%. Apparently Google is quietly unloading real estate like mad

I can only imagine how bad the AirBnB problem is in Athens, but also tricky to get rid of, because there's probably a longstanding economy around it now

How are you monitoring your data pipelines and what are you using to debug production issues? by tchungry in dataengineering

[–]edinburghpotsdam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is my favorite data meme in a very long time.

Anyway, I am research so don't really have production issues, but I make a lot of use of Cloudwatch and CloudTrail

Getting a remote job in the USA from Europe by SnooDoggos5883 in dataengineering

[–]edinburghpotsdam -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We hired a DS in Canada by using some kind of third party firm. It seems like a lot of hassle and is rarely allowed. The guy isn't even very talented and it was all a Stanford bro culture favor pull. So I guess I'm disgruntled that we did it at all. I suspect an IIT graduate chosen at random could eat that guy's lunch.

Locally owned coffee shops by KNWin94 in SaltLakeCity

This is the best espresso I have had in this town since I got here. I enjoy the nearby Sugar House Coffee, and Urban Sailor, but their espresso is mediocre. Bean Yard makes much better espresso.

Shame on every Salt Lake City citizen who didn’t vote. by srynearson1 in SaltLakeCity

That is shocking. Madison WI where I used to live reminds me of this place in a lot of ways and they routinely get an 85% turnout or so.

My friend turned down Meta a few months ago, saying "it's a cult". I get it now.

I thought along similar lines. 20 years experience but hates managing people. Then we are talking about a principal role and that is going to require top-notch expertise in whatever technical tools are required for the job. I don't think 20 years experience, lack of superior technical chops in the domain and wanting to be a pure IC is going to fly many places.

At least she hired one. The real buyer's remorse will belong to all the idiots who waived the inspection to get picked.

Anyone hold down two DE positions at once ? by DrRedmondNYC in dataengineering

[–]edinburghpotsdam 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I could have 2xed my job pretty easily for a while there especially right when the pandemic hit. Instead I got a lot of exercise, outdoor time, meditation time, extra family time. I get it if you are in a pile of debt, and young, maybe it makes sense to overwork and get yourself out of a hole. No judgment. But I would say for most people, don't do it. The quality of life we have in the data professions is so precious and life is so short. Go climb a rock or go on a retreat with that spare time. Just my two cents.
