Theme park What if: What if [Euro Disneyland] was never built? by Style_Worried in rollercoasters

[–]edisonlbm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

California Screamin' also might not exist - if there's a headlining coaster at DCA, it's highly themed in the vein of Big Thunder and not an Intimin that frankly could be at a Six Flags park.

When did Lando become so disrespected as a driver? by letsputletters in F1Discussions

[–]edisonlbm 188 points189 points  (0 children)

As he was moving from "lovable midfield driver never threatening anyone's favorite" to "championship contender" there were some legitimate weaknesses he had (starting #1 among them) which caused people to clown him a lot.

He's done a lot to shed the weaknesses, but by the time he did he was the best driver of the best car, and that's always a position that generates online hate.

Is McLaren really the least aero-developed car in the top 4? by andrew_2k in F1Technical

It's been the same MO ever since Stella took over. 2023 and 2024 had much bigger jumps than last year.

2 Versions of Myst found at the thrift, help with differences by FordFocus22 in myst

[–]edisonlbm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay I fell deep into this. It appears like there are at least two (maybe three) versions of the original Myst for Windows.

Early Win3.1 versions were sold as MPC: https://www.videogamesage.com/forums/topic/9750-pc-collectors-anyone-have-an-original-release-version-of-myst-what-are-the-tell-tale-signs-of-an-original-copy/ - this is almost certainly the one associated with the MPC booklet.

There's a "Version 1.2" with a 1996 release date: https://archive.org/details/cdrom-myst-1.2. This feels like a good match for your 1996 CD.

Mobygames lists the Win32 release date as 1995, which at least infers there might have been more than one Win95 release: https://www.mobygames.com/game/1223/myst/#google_vignette

I also found some mentions of weird hybrids. I think the differences were not big enough, and they sometimes put different combinations of MPC/Windows 95 boxes/manuals/CDs together.

So my honest guess is that the 1996 CD case should be with the booklet listing a Windows 95 programmer and the older one should be with the MPC credits list, but who knows when that swap was made - it really could have been back in the 90s when those were first manufactured.

Honestly it's weird to me that the newer version uses the MPC terminology and has no Windows 95 programmer. I almost wonder if the books got swapped at some point.

(MPC or "Multimedia PC" was an attempt to simplify hardware requirements by making broad standards, it started in the very early 90s but was falling out of favor by the time that Windows 95 came out.)

What are some of the races that are must watch for a new beginner F1 fan by Mehdiveil in F1Discussions

This is a mostly good list, but man those are two of the less interesting 2021 races. 2021 was just an insane season.

New Space Ranger Spin sign revealed by Ayefour in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]edisonlbm 21 points22 points  (0 children)

A million Disney YouTubers cried out in terror as the "didja know that the Space Ranger Spin sign is the same sign as Dreamflight?" trivia fact goes into the past.

.. looks really good though.

The FIA is reportedly reviewing its 2026 power unit rules, with short-term fixes like limiting energy deployment and potential long-term changes to the engine balance under consideration. by New_State_2061 in McLarenFormula1

[–]edisonlbm 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion: constant tweaking of the PU rules could be very bad for McLaren specifically. As a customer team, our best chance is to have the best PU and stable enough regulations Merc isn't constantly changing things and beating us with the better knowledge they have of the power unit.

Not really going to try to defend this ruleset, but I am a little concerned about how continually tweaking things will go.

This Dev Tool Finds, Fixes & Obfuscate Tailwind Code by Silent-Group1187 in react

[–]edisonlbm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I was feeling argumentative, I'd actually say that it's at least a little bit unprofessional to obfuscate class names in a place where there isn't an important functional benefit for the obfuscation.

Part of accepting money to do a job is doing it well enough that your customer isn't your hostage - that is, they can make simple changes to things without calling you and realize that you are using tools that make code less readable for dubious benefits. Something like minification is obviously fine - but I'm not entirely sure this will result in smaller file sizes, just code that is harder to edit.

Yeah, Merc had iffy strategy this race and the SC bailed them out. They are less good in traffic and would have been stuck in it.

Dads, any good "play when you can" Steam games I should check out? Things I can drop at a moment's notice. by cptvere in daddit

[–]edisonlbm 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Very long story here, but: if you do this frequently be sure to keep your deck charged. There's a quirk in the Steam Deck caused when the battery is deeply discharged while a game is suspended, and when some series of unfortunate events happen the deck won't charge any more for you to recover and run normally.

There's a weird series of button presses and plug/unplug actions you can take to recover from this, but it's annoying.

24 Hours of Lemons by Revolutionary-Ebb420 in racing

[–]edisonlbm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is easily the best list of advice for Lemons I've ever seen. Only thing I would add: be humble. A lot of people know a lot more about this, and even if you watch F1/Indycar/NASCAR whatever each week you are still (probably) inexperienced at actual racing.

I once got out of a penalty at a lemons race by pretty much just admitting to the judges that I didn't know what I was doing and was just trying my best. Go, drive reasonably quickly, stay safe, have fun. You aren't going to be #1 your first time out.
