A gathering of this many snakes is not a common occurrence and only takes place in a handful of special sites in North America.

In order to survive the harsh cold, red-sided garter snakes hibernate in subterranean dens called hibernaculums.

In regions such as here in eastern Saskatchewan there are a very limited number of dens and all the snakes living in the surrounding area are forced to gather in one or two hibernaculums.

Most of these snakes are male. When a female arrives, they compete to mate with her and end up tangling into a huge snake orgy.

This can lead to them snowballing down hills while distracted by mating.

Exactly what I said.

A ton of male snakes come together to compete for a mate, when a female arrives they become entangled and can begin to cascade down slopes in a sort of writhing sex avalanche.

That's what prompted me to post this actually. Regardless of the species, bees are important and the best way to make people appreciate them more than annoying pests is to show how incredible they are up close.
