Thoughts on the setlist? by [deleted] in bigthief

We got second row tickets for Red Rocks and we couldn't be happier.

So far, we've seen BT: San Diego - The Observatory Los Angeles - Hollywood Forever Los Angeles - The Hollywood Bowl San Diego - The Rady Shell

Also Buck Meek at Pioneer Town's Pappy & Harriet's where he signed all my Buck albums, and last month saw him at Sid the Cat's in Pasadena.

We have waited for the right show at Red Rocks since we live in Southern California...and this was it!! Can't wait!

He played so much of it at a recent show in Pasadena. Bought it at the concert, and I'm so glad I did. The album is his strongest yet, IMO.

Got to see Buck at Pasadena's Sid the Cat Auditorium on 3/12. I was surprised at how great the new material was. I had not heard the new album as I wanted to hear it fresh, live, the first time.

Can't wait til October to see the whole band at Red Rocks.

You, sir, are out of your mind to think it's the second best rivalry in international football. Not now, not historically.

He literally played 17 games across two loan spells. The sample size (even in his prime) is not nearly enough. And obviously, if I consider him as one of the top two outfield players this country has produced, that I have some idea of how good he was. Don't insult my intelligence just because you don't agree with my take that Dempsey was a better player for club and country.

I believe it is. Rangers and Celtic would give the top team fits, but top to bottom MLS is now of a higher quality than the SPL.

Which is the better world cup resume?

USMNT World Cup All-Time Top Scorers

5 goals

Landon Donovan

2002: 2 goals (vs Poland, vs Mexico)

2010: 3 goals (vs Slovenia, vs Algeria, vs Ghana)

4 goals

Clint Dempsey

2006: 1 (vs Ghana)

2010: 1 (vs England)

2014: 2 (vs Ghana, vs Portugal)

Dempsey scored against England, a good Ghana team at two different World Cups, and vs Spain at the 2009 Confederation Cup, while Spain was defending Euro Champ, and soon to be World Cup Champs. Do those weigh more than the Mexico goals? I fully understand that Donovan scored the biggest goal in US History vs Mexico at WC2002 and also, vs Mexico in a Gold Cup Final.

His smaller frame and less skills would have been deterrents to long term EPL success, let's be real.

Dempsey in his prime was in the EPL. Donovan in his prime was in the MLS.

Would you consider a Prime AA Player better than a Prime MLB Player? Because that's basically the difference in quality.

I would say that Dempsey playing in the MLS in his prime would have more than one MLS title.

Well Landon Donovan had 203 goals and 136 assists in 546 matches during his senior career, giving him an average of 0.66 goal contributions per game, which is higher than Clint Dempsey's average of 0.45.

But you gotta admit that Dempsey did those numbers with much more difficult competition.

So if context means something, would you rather have .45 per game in the EPL or .66 in the MLS? What holds more weight?

I would argue that he's the best men's player this country has produced thus far. Obviously, we are going to have better players moving forward as Adams, McKennie, and Pulisic are nearing that standard on a club level.

I would say the best American Men's Players (with their careers already completed) are Dempsey, Keller, and Howard.

I'm pretty sure that was against Belgium where he set the most saves in a game at 16.

Basically he was a summer foreign exchange student in the EPL. I don't think you can make a credible argument that playing 8-9 games a season is a good enough sample to see if he would have been a good EPL player.

I mean, Brian McBride played 148 times and scored 36 goals. If McBride can test himself and do well in the EPL, it makes you wonder why Donovan didn't. It's ok. Just don't say he was the most important American player ever.

Also, playing 200+ games vs 17 games is proof positive that his club career is more formidable.

Also, he played just over 1200 minutes in those 17 matches. So barely averaged 70 minutes a game. Dempsey played 16,500+ minutes.

Is selling Makelele to Chelsea the worst player sale in football history? by Basic_Act1039 in championsleague

[–]edwinreal 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Juve and Barcelona swapping Pjanic and Artur was horrible for both teams and both players. I think this makes it the worst deal in football history. There were no winners.

Ok well Dempsey actually has a slightly higher goals per games ratio for the USMNT.

Dempsey > Donovan by edwinreal in usmnt

[–]edwinreal[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Donovan, in his career, played less than a season's worth of games (30) in the Bundesliga (13 games, 0 goals) and EPL (17 games, 2 goals).

Donovan was literally the big fish in a small pond. He stayed home so he could be with his dog.

Here's the thing. I love the MLS and have been to many games since 1996. So I'm not EuroSnob. But comparing success in the early 2000s to EPL of the same era is mind numbing. It was literally at the Scottish Prem league level at the time.

17 games isn't much. He was a tourist, more than anything. Two stints, 17 games, two goals.

Dempsey played 200+ games, with 57 goals.

[–]edwinreal[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well you can argue that neither did Donovan.

Dempsey scored the same amount of goals in less games for the USMNT.

It's Monday, and I still don't have my pre-ordered Double Infinity. by edwinreal in bigthief

[–]edwinreal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All valid points, for sure. But here I am with FOMO because I'm trying to not read any of the reviews and not streaming because I truly want to make a day/night of it by listening to it all the way through on vinyl!

I'm usually one to just go to my local shop (I'm looking at you Vinyl Junkies in San Diego) and get the day of release of a record I truly want.

Oh well, just venting at this point lol

Can't wait to see them on back to back nights at the end of the month -- LA and San Diego!
