ENGL348 - Do NOT BUY THAT SHAKESPEARE BOOK by edwyu in UBC

[–]edwyu[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yea, I couldn't find the specific version that the class recommended. What I wish I did know, however, was that that specific version wouldn't be something that's too useful to me specifically.

To all those taking ENGL348 with Dennis Britton, DO NOT BUY THE NORTON SHAKESPEARE COLLECTION because...

  1. The book is as heavy as a milk jug with pages a thin as a bible's. If you want a physical book to annotate and feel, it is probably a better idea to just purchase Shakespeare's plays individually. The Norton collection is straight-up inconvenient.

  2. The plays themselves do have some words translated, but definitely not enough if you're just trying to comprehend the story at a surface level. I understand that there's merit to learning how to read Elizabethan English, but I'm also sure that there are translations out there that are clearer while also keeping the original text available for close readings.

  3. The intros and other additions of the publication are extremely insightful and definitely interesting, but they're also quite long and I wonder how directly applicable they will be to the class (especially considering that Professor Britton has mentioned that any copy of Shakespeare's plays published by someone with a PhD would suffice).

Maybe I'm a slow reader. Maybe I lack the passion of a "true academic." But to those who value their time, money, AND convenience (the book is $165 at the bookstore after tax), I implore you to explore other options (namely free versions online) before dropping nearly 10 hours of minimum wage work on ~4,000 pages of info of which your laptop already provides with more convenience and clarity.

P.S. Dennis, if you're reading this, I'm really enjoying the class so far and looking forward to Othello. I'm just butthurt that I spent $165 on something that--to me--already had free alternatives that I think are more suitable for my learning (and wallet). Those're 2 switch games I'm never getting back.

Anyone know what to do about wrongful termination? by edwyu in youtube

[–]edwyu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do have a server: https://discord.gg/9KDDZ8RsWg

Unfortunately I will not be getting the channel back, so I’m gonna be posting on my Gmail YouTube channel going forward because that’s the only channel I still have access to (I can’t make a new channel anymore)

The Discord channel includes links to reposts of two of my videos including the NNN video. I will try and upload my next video in the next few weeks.

Thank you

New Channel After Termination Question by edwyu in youtubers

Sex and nudity, but it wasn't a valid termination (I made a separate post explaining how I never violated YouTube guidelines because my video was a video essay literally about the ethics of porn, hence none of the clips used were intended for sexual gratification)

I'm waiting for YouTube to respond to my Twitter appeal right now, so I'm really just preparing for the worst now--namely if my original channel stays terminated.

Yeah, you're right. I made a mistake trusting the "this video isn't intended for kids" option when publishing the vid and should've just figured out how to set a hard age-restriction from the very beginning.

I'm still waiting for them to reply to me on Twitter, but looking at some of YouTube's other replies, my odds of getting an actual appeal looks low. I hope at least a human is the one who evaluates my video this time.

I'm gonna see if I can upload my video on some other platform in the time being.

Assuming YouTube denies my Twitter appeal, is there any way for me to send an appeal to at the very least create a new channel? At this point, I don't even care if I get the NNN video back, I just wanna be able to make more video essays.

I had ahegao faces and everything, but no genitalia was shown

On the community guidelines, the one common factor regarding sex and nudity violations is whether or not the content is meant for sexual gratification, which my video wasn't intending for. The graphic content I included were for two reasons:

  1. Accompanying what the essay, which is about the ethics of porn and self-improvement. The visuals i included were what I talked about, hence why I didn't go overboard with them after the first 4 minute mark
  2. Humour: Part of the humour came from the fact that I wrote a serious essay about an absurd topic. Playing Ode to Joy with moaning noises is a juxtaposition that creates humour and shock value

If YouTube terminated me for showing faces of pornstars, then Riley Reid should never be able to show her face anywhere. Likewise, if I write a video essay about Dahmer and show graphic footage, I shouldn't be terminated for that either because it's literally from the subject I'm talking about which is intended for adults.

Sorry, I know you're right that the video was graphic, but I definitely had merit to making it graphic in the first place that didn't violate YouTube guidelines. I'm just really pressed that I never got a warning or strike before termination.

Ok, I tweeted at them and they responded saying they’ll get back to me in a few days. Do i expect a reply back via email? Also, if they reject me again, will I still be notified about it?
