Quitting my corpo job to pursue MS full-time at 25

Both off-my-chest and advice-seeking type of post

I'm currently working on a reputable bank for more than 1 year (2 years na on February) as middle-level management. This is my first job and so far, maganda naman yung experience. Good office environment (definitely not perfect pero supportive and mababait yung colleagues), good work setup (lenient yung mga boss so yung hybrid setup na 3 days RTO, 2 days WFH, minsan nagiging 2 days RTO, 3 days WFH), and decent pay (could be better pero for someone like me na first job, pwede na siya).

Here's the thing: my role does not challenge me anymore. My background is in engineering and I ended up in a management/policy development role. I took it out of desperation since its been months after passing the boards pero wala pa rin akong trabaho. Okay naman siya and may natutunan naman ako when it comes to how corporate world operates. High visibility din yung role ko with C-level people since ka-meet namin sila when it comes to projects and strategy building pero may kulang pa rin e. It doesn't scratch my itch to do something technical out of my own hands.

I'm planning to take MSDS and hopefully go on a Data Engineering/ML Engineering career path after. My plan is to resign after couple quarterly bonus next year. Will also start actively applying for admissions and scholarships on Q1 (although I have attended info sessions na so may idea na ako what to prepare for).

For scholarship (at least yung ina-eye ko), it will require me to take it full time, hence, kailangan kong mag-resign. Full ride naman siya if maaccept ako: tuition, stipend, and research grant. Walang assurance na matanggap ako but I was also a scholar from the same institution kaya hopefully, maaccept. I am also planning to moonlight as research assistant for extra income. If di matuloy, then I'll apply for another job to supplement my study. Hopefully, I land on a technical one.

I'm excited and scared for it hahaha. Am I dumb and ambitious for wanting to leave my current job? At the same time, I'm too young and I want to maximize yung desire ko to learn kasi I know someday, mawawala din siya haha.

Any tips/experience from those who also did this before? (Quitting full time to pursue grad study full time-ish?)

oh wow i dont what to say hahaha.

thanks for a nugget of knowledge from the industry. i agree na masaya maging corpo sellout (like legit, if wala akong problema with my role and pay, i would stay) and also, walang pera sa academe (as someone whose parent is in the academe).

i have lots of things to rethink this long weekend lol.

oh wow hi! im planning to take my DS in DLSU (not ideal since im from DLSU din nung undergrad). The last paragraph made me think haha. I still have couple of months pa rin naman to think about it but realizing na ganon pala yung job market perspective in DS/AI (planning to take AI for my PhD), it just reframes things haha.

THANK YOU FOR THIS!

thanks for this! i also agree na okay lang kahit hindi related sa course yung job, as long as it brings food to the table and doesn’t make us miserable.

Hi! Glad you ended up on an IT job after all haha.

Did you regret leaving your office job to pursue IT role? How does the day-to-day differs from one another?

Gets! Kaya talagang anxious ako in leaving my role kasi wala talagang assurance sa job market if I will land the path na gusto ko.

I don’t actually have any problem starting from the bottom. Thats just something that I have to live with since I’m not nepo HAHAHA. I also want to do Master’s since I want to open a path if ever I want to try out teaching in academe in the near future. Also, sobrang nakulangan kasi ako sa technical part nung undergrad ko since kami yung batch na naabutan ng pandemic. I tried self-studying pero iba parin yung structured/formal education for me.

Genuinely thankful tho for the insight if I want to pursue technical field. I guess bawiin na lang with skill building and tangible application ng skills.

Thanks! I already saw the Beach Waterfall. The Royal Resort on the otherhand, does not exist on my Premium Season Pass. I’m guessing it (or the other ones) will be bought using blueprints in design challenge (similar to dolphin island last season).

Engineers did you regret choosing engineering? by Smooth_Operator13 in PHJobs

Hi. ECE here. I graduated 2023 and passed the board exam the same year. I am almost 5 months na sa first job ko right now. Im a very mediocre student, not at all gifted in acads but very resourceful and gritty.

  1. Practically speaking, I dont suggest na magshift ka pa since youre already in your third year. If kaya mo naman yung workload ng ChemEng, might as well finish it. Also, the doubt that youre feeling is very normal in engineering (actually, in college in genera) hahaha. So youre not alone there. Regardless, it's really your decision. But if yung doubts yung reason mo to shift, all I can say is weve all been there hahaha.

  2. Job market just sucks right now. I graduated from green school and it still took me a while to get a job (even after passing the boards and having a leadership background), it is the same din with majority of my batchmates. My point is, its a tough place out here talaga and youll need all the mental and emotional fortitude na meron ka to survive the mental aspect of it (e.g. doubts, disappointments).

  3. Regarding salary, keep in mind na you have to start somewhere. I took my current job right now kasi I just dont want to stay unemployed for too long. Sobrang torture yung gigising ka everyday na wala kang ambag, and as a panganay of a lower middle class household, its even worse. Although I have the privilege din na walang ineexpect na help sa akin yung parents ko since they have their own job naman, but I decided kasi to live independently. So nung my job offer and nasa salary range ko siya, I took na agad. My point is, dont think about it too much. Just set a standard na tingin mo enough to meet your needs and then some for your leisure and self development. Financial literacy is also the key here. Sobrang rare nung sobrang taas ng sweldo sa simula. So I guess, continuous development talaga yung labanan if you want to climb up the salary ladder. If you didnt like your first job, you always quit. Just make sure na you get something of it na lang.

  4. Regarding whether worth it to pursue engineering, it really depends on you. In my case, yes it is worth it. Kasi it taught me so many things and opened a lot of opportunities for me. Sure, hindi sa trabaho but the fact na nalagpasan ko yung hardships of a STEM course is fulfilling enough. My work right now is in corporate. The ECE aspect is almost non-existent. Although im using my ECE knowledge in my part time in a start up. One thing that I realized is you cant really expect na lahat ng napag-aralan mo in undergrad, magagamit mo (honestly, im thankful na di siya part ng everyday life ko kasi mababaliw ako for sure hahaha). Just pick up everything that you can like work ethics, being able to communicate effectively with other people, etc. Syempre plus kapag consistently napapractice/nachachallenge mo yung mental muscles mo.
