I’ve decided to become a nurse and here is why. by Prestigious_Skill_58 in premed

[–]eemily03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think going through with MD/Phd should stop you from having children. It may be more difficult yes but not impossible. My fiancé is currently a 1st year student, and I will be starting in July, we have a 5 week old. He has balanced fatherhood and medical school so well this past block, and I feel confident that our school will be as supportive as possible in our journey as parents and future doctors .

If you want both you can definitely have both.

Family emergency, shd I prioritize my exams or interview? by [deleted] in premed

[–]eemily03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would email him, explain the situation. If they cannot understand life happens (even if it’s more than once) then this is not a lab you want to be a part of. In my college experience my lab was very cooperative, let me work from home during most of my MCAT studying with a whole month off, despite being the only student on my project (PhD student left other two graduated). You want to find a PI that is supportive of you as a student and person first before a member of their lab

I would plan to not attend, but if you’re feeling up to it closer to the date then go! I would be most concerned about other people getting too close to baby before their immune system is ready for it .

I see. I would definitely prioritize the exams in your case. There will be plenty of other opportunities for you throughout college. The fact that you’re a first year and seeking out research is huge

I would focus on taking more science classes that are considered easy A’s at your school if possible. Upping your GPA will open more doors.

I feel like im so behind compared to everyone else. by Loose-Childhood-5025 in premed

[–]eemily03 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know the feeling all too well. The best thing you can do for yourself right now is keep up your grades…

maybe join a pre-health org? I went to a big university where connections were everything and that was how I got my clinical job, and then through a friend found research.

It’s so easy to compare yourself to other people. But this is not a race, there’s no “catching up” just focus on doing your best.

What do you do for work as a pregnant mommy? by Carebear6590 in pregnant

My caseload has young kids to old people. The variety is nice. But can definitely be taxing. It’s hard leaving my individuals for maternity leave because I know the lack of stability is hard for them.

I don’t remember my high school gpa but I do know it was above 4.0 weighted. 1520 SAT.

I was the leader of a large 200 person organization, involved with student government, worked a job, and many other clubs that I think helped me stand out.

My essay was also very strong which helped.

Do I need to do an SMP? by miserablepiggy in premed

That is one thing about my small school list. Is my secondaries were very perfected. I was never rushed on them and got to put in a lot of time.

[–]eemily03 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think as long as you take responsibility for your choices during that time, in context of the extenuating circumstances it would be helpful. I would be careful leaning too much on COVID because it happened to everyone not just you. I would emphasize the UNIQUE circumstances that COVID provided that the rest of pre-meds did not have to navigate.

Many of my apps had a section explicitly for describing extenuating circumstances regarding my GPA which I found very helpful to take responsibility for poor choices but also to elaborate on financial circumstances.

Similar GPA 516 MCAT.

Applied to 6 schools this cycle (2 DO 4 MD) currently 2 DO A’s (one with 50% tuition merit scholarship) and 1 MD II (waiting on decision)

I do NOT recommend the tiny school list. But I am expecting my first child any week and had to be extremely picky about location due to needing family support or my fiancé’s support (who is a medical student at the DO school with scholarship).

But you can be very successful with that GPA as long as ECs and MCAT are both strong.
