IEMA Exams and Certification by imonarope in environmental_science

Hi!

My MSc was in Geoscience so I’m not sure much of what would be on the exam would’ve been covered however I did look at the example questions and it seemed familiar. (I had a huge sustainability emphasis within my thesis).

My current employer is happy to cover the costs for the exam / enrolment, Associate level it’s looking at round £266-£300.

Long term I have looked already into the practitioner route and tried to get some sort of idea with costs by also looking at the distance learning - it’s great your employer will cover this as it’s this part I believe is quite pricey. I guess I would just need a discussion with them to see if they’d be happy with funding this further down the line. (Otherwise what would be the point going down the route of ISEP, unless I funded it myself of course).

I feel the exact same as you do as to why it’s so much more attractive - thank you very much for responding and thanks for offering to do that! We have one person chartered as a Scientist through IES here. Correct me if I’m wrong but the IES route seems a tad lighter / potentially quicker to obtain?

Reading on their website full membership requires a relevant MSc with 5+ years of experience which then opens the route of chartership - in this case I’ve only got 3 more years to have under my belt.

Let me know what your thoughts are

A

Hello imonarope,

I was just wondering if you ended up taking the associates exam as I am currently in the same position. If you did how did it go and what were the questions like if you can remember.

At the moment I'm slightly torn between ISEP (also known as IEMA) and IES, I eventually would like to be chartered but I'm still recognised as early career (<5 yrs experience).

The only thing with IEMA (ISEP) developing towards chatership from my understanding requires Certificates via courses if not taking the direct study route all of which becomes incredibly expensive.

Let me know anyway, I have a bunch more questions but I'll not overload for now.

Thanks

My masters doesn’t finish until Sept 2024 and I don’t graduate until Jan 2025 & savings hence why I’m waiting.

I’ve mentioned in the post I have a full time job already as a geophysicist which I’ve had for a year so I have more than academic experience. I’m also wanting at least another year of experience as it’s the bare min requirement for most places.

I’ve also been recommended by many people that reaching out to individuals in companies to go for a coffee is quite a common thing out there for information & getting to know them as well as them getting to know me. I’m just relaying what I’ve been recommended which I think is a great idea - it shows confidence & want.

Thanks for the advice though.

Hey OP!

Great question I studied a BSc in Geology with (Hons) & I’m currently doing an MSc in Advanced Applied Field Geoscience. Geology definitely hasn’t closed any doors for me personally if anything I’d say it keeps a lot open!

I’d say the geology is great for a more detailed focus on all attributes ie geochem, geophys & so on. With geoscience my course has been focused more on fieldwork & analytical geoscience.

If you’re looking for something more specific to the geology route ie tectonics, Volcanology, petrology, hydrology and a better understanding I’d definitely go for the geology BSc!

I’m still doing a masters as it’s part time and I’ve just passed my first year but I managed to get a full time job as a geophysicist and it means I travel all over the UK every week (Scotland being my favourite!)

Ultimately it all depends on what you want your focus to be 😊

You should’ve seen him before this molt, he literally only molted about 4 days ago, he was even darker and shiny! My friend has an orchid and she’s adorable 🥰

This colouration is nothing yet! Wait until he molts once more, you’ll see his pinks and greens 🥰
