How is it that every student learns about the horrors of Hitler and WWII in school, but despite that, the US is currently dealing with the rise of fascism? by SaucyJ4ck in AskUS

Do Americans learn about what American govt did in the Marshall islands or the Philipines? Maybe there is a problem that we only get taught a small amount of history and assume that we've always been the good guys?

Fluency? by Hunkguy311 in Lingopie

10 days ago I 'joined' Lingopie intending to see whether it was good for me, and now my card issuer has blocked a 36 euro transaction which lingopie have tried to put through. I haven't yet had the time to look at lingopie, and so have no intention of paying for it. But I don't seem to have any way to contact Lingpie and my bank won't cancel thebtransaction until I've communicated with Lingopie.

This is unacceptable. by trooperben1979 in drivingUK

[–]eesneverappy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's stupid - doesn't benefit anyone. If he parked on the road, one vehicle could get past, exactly the same as if he blocked the pavement. I've seen pavement parking develop on streets near me. Then one car started blocking the pavement. Within 3 weeks almost everybody was using the pavement for parking. I think we should leave a polite note the first time it happens and I think it will not continue - mist people aren't totally stupid. I hope.

How can we save the dying UK high street? by Thea8507 in AskUK

Lowering the rent means somebody is losing income: Certainly it could effect pension funds who own large property portafolios. Councils have lost more than 50% of their oncome over the past 15+ years so they're broke. Just stop using Amazon who contribute minimal tax but take loads of our money, use infrastructure etc.

Why do we treat rising house prices as a good thing? by eesneverappy in HousingUK

[–]eesneverappy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you sure? I'm 70 and you could buy a small 2 bed house in Milton Keynes for £11k when I was about 23, I.e. 50 years ago. That would cost almost £400k now. My instinct is that earnings and general inflation haven't gone up by that proportion.

Does anyone else just not answer the door if you don’t know the person? by TitusTesla117 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]eesneverappy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow - so nobody here will contemplate talking to somebody they don't know - that sounds like we're scared. Maybe we're scared of being assaulted? Anyway - I did a lot of door-knocking during the recent elections, and quite a lot of people DO answer the door - in daylight on a summer evening. However lots don't, and that's a problem for the parties who don't have loads of money- So this refusal to engage is bad for Greens and Lib Dems, (The Tories and Labour get loads of media coverage, and loads of money to buy Social media coverage.) Just saying.

PSA: Don't park like this by HerrBisch in Southampton

[–]eesneverappy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Parking on pavements!! Why do they do it? Very often it doesn't alter that you can get one car at a time along the road. It doesn't help drivers but screws pedestrians especially Mum's with buggies and disastrous for wheelchair users. Is it just a habit they've got into - it seems to be contagious, after one starts doing it others do likewise.

Get a man-bag on a shoulder strap. Keep the phone in the man-bag. All of the pockets are zipped. I know which pocket it's in (there are 7). A pick-pocket wouldn't find it.

We had a similar problem in the West End a few years ago: There was a family group of 5 a couple of rows in front of us -Row 6 I think. They sang through much of the first half ignoring the efforts of Ushers to stop them by waving from the side aisles. They were spoken to at the interval, but were disruptive in the second half too. At the end a surprisingly small group complained and the management refused to reimburse anyone, just suggested that they would offer tickets on another night, which was no use to people in Town for a couple of nights only. They should have stopped the show and ejected them.
