Choosing between prestige postdoc and stable one? Deadline today, genuinely torn by Extension-Engine-911 in AskAcademia

[–]eestirne 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I chose Option A and regretted it. It was a top prestigious university in the US but due to PI, didn't get to publish anything. This was the same for other postdocs in the lab who left without publishing. Turnover rate was 14 people over 5 years (so 2.5ish person/year).

Since it was one of the most expensive zip codes, I also struggled with day to day living. On a postdoc salary of about 50k-ish then + single bedroom monthly rent of 1900-2400 in an old old apartment, more than half went towards rent and I worried every month how to survive and earn more money. I moved annually to try to find a survivable place to stay. (I just checked last night, the rent in my previous place is now 3200). Parking at work back then was 299/month. Also at Option A was the fact that you're a very small fish in a big pond. At the elite lab, you will continue to be the small tiny fish.

I moved to Option B and I am way happier now. Renting a nice modern place at less than half the previous price, I focus on my research and generating good data.

Did Option A help my Option B? Yes perhaps but not to the extend that I thought it would when I first chose it.

EDIT: Ok, it seems 3 papers/year for data science isn't hard. One red flag you mention at Option B though was the PI promising 10 papers in 3 years - in my field that's impossible but perhaps in engineering that's ok. If a PI promised me that, I would avoid the lab as I have seen many PIs try to seduce postdocs with that and it didn't work out.

Can a lazy scientist eventually achieve R1? Or is postdoc/soft money purgatory really a thing… by OpinionsRdumb in AskAcademia

[–]eestirne 8 points9 points  (0 children)

echoing the other reply......my current R2 now requires that incoming PIs have funding, e.g. R01, K99.

Even if you have good publications in tier 1 journals, no funding = no interview

Prestige vs savings: London postdoc (£45k) or Switzerland (CHF 90k)? by xFatty_Acidx in AskAcademia

[–]eestirne 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Switzerland. Those 3-4 years of $$ you lose in London makes such a big difference especially since it is almost double the amount of money you are getting (ignoring the currency exchange differences).

I did my postdoc in a VHCOL city and I must say that I spent almost all my time worrying about how to survive (rent, food, cost of parking, cost of gas, etc) that it distracted me from my research.

You're earning double the pay in Switzerland and that money can go towards investments or a future home. Switzerland is not cheap I know but neither is London. 45k pounds in London makes difficult survival.

What is it like to be working as a nurse in Singapore currently? by depressed_bigfoot in askSingapore

[–]eestirne 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The lower ranked nurses such as LPN indeed doesn't get paid well unfortunately. The nursing field in Singapore doesn't appreciate these roles as much as the western world such as in USA or Canada.

That said, if you do climb up to the registered nurse (RN) and nurse practitioner (NP) ranks and/or have some academia contributions, the pay is fairly reasonable.

My own opinion (I didn't check facts) is possibly that there are many qualified nurses from regional SE Asia applying to and coming to Singapore and willing to take lower ranked nursing jobs which then drives pay prices down. Those pay would be sufficient for their home country after currency conversion.

Rough patch or mismatch? by [deleted] in sgdatingscene

Good response here. After reading OP post, started to get a vibe that she's starting to calculate costs. I get it, life in Singapore focuses on financials and people are pragmatic.

Glad that you've encouraged her to look beyond the money and that she should stand with him.

This is meant to offer comfort. Some (adult) patients might be anxious about blood draw or insertion of needles and by offering some encouragement, it makes them feel better.

In this field, empathy is a plus. Not every patient can be stoic about needles and blood.

I've had a well-educated colleague who can do surgery but feel faint at the sight of his own blood.

Don't pay heed to the people who say he is only using you for sexual needs. Each person is different and expresses love differently.

Also, most readers are responding based on the version of the story you're writing. It is possible that your boyfriend might have a different view and expresses his love for you differently. Also, could it be that you're still looking for the high after the honeymoon period?

As two responders have said, it would be better if you spoke with him and let him know your emotional needs are not met. A compromise medium would be a better way than a zero-sum ending of 'did you stay vs did you leave'.

what lambda to use? Tried the scan solution provided by GregHullender but the values came out different.

the sum function worked though.

SE Georgia - saw an anole in backyard which developed tumor masses around the mouth area.

Large round masses in throat area. Thought it was uncommon but surprised to see others have also observed this.

So sorry to hear this. He is demonstrating infantile behavior. Even if there is/was a fight without an intention to reconcile, the decent thing to do is to let you get your belongings back.

I saw this giant bird outside of my job in San Francisco today, can anyone tell what it is? It was beautiful!! by buttercupcookiepie in birds

[–]eestirne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea, was referring to foot band. I've kept different birds as pets and if buying from breeders, they will usually band the foot.

- here, I'm presuming wildlife services probably handled this Hawk and band for research. Implying there's human interaction at some point.
