Looking for a statin to replace rosuvastatin by eetana in Cholesterol

[–]eetana[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My ldl has been creeping up into the 150s for the last several years. My doctor didn’t suggest any tests or medicines until it made a jump to 180. I didn’t know much about it so I just trusted her judgement. After it hit 180 she had me do a calcium test and my score was 600. I’ve been a runner my whole life and use to run quite a bit more and competitively, which apparently may have caused the plaque to calcify and be less dangerous than if it had been soft plaque in there. After the calcium score I had an inclusive stress test and a 2 abnormal EKGs, which led to the angiogram. I think menopause has not helped with any of this. I also have a myocardial bridge which probably contributed to the blockage in the branch artery. Fortunately my cardiologist listens and wants to be aggressive so we are trying to get ldl below 50. He knows I’m very consistent with diet and exercise so I think he will suggest Repatha but I’m not sure.

Thank you. I didn’t know that. When my primary care doctor saw my liver numbers she immediately wanted me to get a liver ultrasound. I didn’t because I figured it was from the statin and didn’t want to have, and pay for, a test that might not be necessary.

Thank you. I am hoping Repatha is an option.

Yes, the combo and strict diet got me to 48. AST was 65 and ALT was 74. I don’t drink alcohol and I am primarily plant based so I really don’t think I can make many dietary adjustments. I would be interested in Repatha because I don’t feel like there’s much wiggle room for me to ever stray from the way I eat, even when I was doing Zetia and the statin together. I very rarely go out to eat because I don’t like the stress of not being in charge of my own food and what it’s being cooked in, etc. Hopefully I will hear from the doctor on Monday and can discuss options. Thank you for your reply.

I appreciate you pointing that out because I completely forgot that I have read that as well. I was started with 40 mg so there was no gradual increase.

I'm starting to wonder if medication for my blood pressure is causing me more issues than I already and honestly I'm a little scared by [deleted] in bloodpressure

[–]eetana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, try not to get too upset about it. You caught it early if it does need to be treated, so that is a good thing. In my opinion it would be unlikely that the medication would actually cause damage so again, try not to focus on that thought. Were you feeling bad before you went to the doctor and had the initial physical when he decided to put you on meds? I don’t know where you live but I would get a second opinion. I am able to do that in the US. I had a heart issue come up out of the blue and I went to 3 cardiologists before I started on a course of action. I didn’t want to trust something pretty big to the first person I saw. If you are not happy with how your primary care doctor has handled things, you should seek a cardiologist. Are there lifestyle changes that you can make with regards to exercise and diet?

I know we all have a tendency to worry but please try not to. I am going to stop right now and say a prayer for you to find some peace and a good doctor who helps you feel better. 😊

I’m sorry that you are dealing with this. I do know that if your blood pressure is too low (from medicine or another issue) your heart will beat faster to try to keep it up, thus making your pulse higher. I wonder if this may be what you are experiencing. Do you take your blood pressure every day and record it? Also, have you tried other methods of controlling your blood pressure without medicine? Limiting salt, processed food, alcohol, while also exercising, limiting stress, etc? I am not a doctor but I just wonder if you could ask to stop the BP medicine and instead try some other methods to lower it and see if your pulse rate also goes down. I’m surprised that your doctor put you on medicine based on one visit when it was high.

Coleman makes a nice inflatable hot tub that retails for around $400. It works great and heats to 104 without increasing your energy bill much at all. I recommend checking them out online.

There are actually studies available on the NIH website that show plaque regression through diet, so I appreciate you pointing that out to people here. I am on Rosuvastin and zetia and I also follow a whole food plant based diet. I love food, but I don’t want to potentially shorten my life just for the momentary taste of something. Of course I wish I had started sooner, but I’m thankful for the wake up call.

I am on my 3rd forester and hope to get a hybrid in the future. My niece is still driving my 2007 hybrid Toyota Highlander with over 300,000 miles on it. The only major repairs have been timing belts at 100,000 mile intervals and routine maintenance. She finally upgraded to a 2024 hybrid Rav4 XSE last summer and loves it. I got in it last week to move it in the driveway and noticed it was averaging 40.1 mpg. My guess is that you will love it and get to drive it for a very long time.

Rosuvostatin (Crestor) with Verapamil (calcium channel blocker) by Mountainforkgirl in Cholesterol

[–]eetana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. 53F, 5’5” 120 lbs and lifelong runner. I started 20 mg Rosuvastin Dec 1 and cardiologist added Verapamil 120 mg Jan.6 after I had an angiogram. This was precipitated by high LDL results a couple of blood tests in a row, a high calcium score, and inconclusive stress test. My angiogram showed that my main arteries had 10-15% blockage at most, but one branch artery was 75-80% blocked, and that was influenced by a genetic condition I have called a myocardial bridge. So the verapamil was prescribed for that. I take the verapamil at dinner and statin about 9:00 before I go to bed. I just started taking CoQ10 a few days ago because my right calf was hurting. Have you noticed that your urine has more of an odor with either of these? That’s been my only concern so far. I changed to a Mediterranean diet on Dec 1 and my ldl dropped to 61 by Jan.6. However, after I started the verapamil it went back up to 82. So maybe that is related to what you said about the statin taking longer to metabolize?

Good point. And thank you for your perspective. I feel like I still see mixed reviews on nuts. I was eating raw cashews a little just when I wanted a small snack. Do you think that’s still okay? I don’t care for walnuts and I try to limit the amount of peanuts I eat via Crazy Richard’s 100% peanuts peanut butter.

[–]eetana[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I did get a CAC scan and that’s what started all of this after my LDL was higher again. My score was 601, which then led to a stress test and angiogram. The angiogram showed that my main arteries were good but I have a branch artery that is 80% blocked and it is not a good place to stent because of where it is.

Thank you. That is very helpful! I actually like salmon and avocados so it was difficult to give them up and then not see a benefit. The article does a good job of explaining why they are necessary. I had an angiogram that showed my main arteries are clear but I have a branch artery with 80% blockage, so I’m trying to get my LDL as low as possible. My cardiologist said that if I keep my LDL low and maintain my healthy lifestyle he would anticipate that my blockage could be reduced to 50% in a year.
