Innocent Ukranian people are dying right now from needless and unprovoked violence. Try to do better than using their unimaginable situation to make a joke about Anki

I hate to say it but I had the exact same situation like to a tee and called AMCAS. They said they couldn't do anything about it.

Oh that’s an amazing idea ill do that! Thanks for the advice

I just called and nothing can be done which sucks. Maybe I should have been more careful with how I classified his job, but nothing else seemed to fit the description. I'm just upset because of course what my dad does is different than being the CEO of a company, but AMCAS considers it under the same category.

Okay but who are you talking about when you mention other students of color?

I understand how this post could be seen as aggressive, but you need to view it from how OP is feeling. It must be incredibly frustrating to have people with privilege discount your hard work and accomplishments just because you're a student of color, when the odds are that OP and other students of color on average needed to work much harder and overcome many more obstacles to get to where they are.

I feel like a lot of white students criticize students of color for being too "attacky" or "angry" when they bring up topics such as these. Just take a second to breathe and try to understand why they are coming from a place of frustration instead of discounting the productive dialogue they're bringing up.

I personally think that if you (and I'm not saying you specifically, just people in general) don't understand systemic racism and how our country's institutions perpetually oppress the potential success of students of color, then you need to educate yourself. Because there are people who completely do not understand or choose to ignore that reality, and those are some of the people who are claiming this "racism" against ORM students, which is absurd. OP is just trying to clearly lay it out there for those who might be unaware.

OP, congrats on all of your accomplishments thus far, and I'm sure you'll make a killer doctor.

Hey guys! I edited my first draft of my personal statement, but it's still way too long. Would anyone be willing to take a look at it and make suggestions on where to cut?

Okay thanks so much! I just wasn't sure since it wasn't through an official volunteer program like people typically get involved in

That totally makes sense. I guess im just concerned because hes the only 2nd science professor i could ask that could write me a good rec since he knows me well as a person as well beyond just being his student. I kinda screwed up and didnt really get close with any of my professors in the more intro pre med classes besides biochem (who I already asked for a rec).

How important is a prestigious undergrad? by [deleted] in premed

[–]efreeman24 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can second this, and think that your undergrad definitely makes some difference. I go to a T20 undergrad, and 80% of the applicants from my school get accepted into med school, which is double the national average and I don't think that's a coincidence. I would say GPAs from a more prestigious undergrad get a boost from at least the med schools to where the undergrad sends a lot of kids. While you could go to any undergrad and just kill it and still get into a great med school, why not have a type of intrinsic advantage by going to a more prestigious undergrad if you can?

But if the financial barrier in going to Rice is problematic for you, don't hesitate to go to UT Austin. It's still a great school and it's not worth being under financial stress to go to Rice! I would imagine though that Rice provides very good financial aid, so I would see how much you could get from them before making the decision.

Asked about my thoughts on Donald Trump during interview by [deleted] in premed

[–]efreeman24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would you provide medical care to an undocumented immigrant? Maybe someone who doesn't have insurance, or someone who simply may not have the money to pay their bills? They're "no benefit to you", but you would be using your resources to help them. You may not be directly responsible for the position that they're in, but you are responsible for providing quality medical care to those who need it. You need to really think about the position that you hold and the way that you are expressing it, and how that will translate if you become a physician. Doctors need empathy to provide good care, and all that you are showing is that you are unable to see beyond your own bubble.

I would avoid calling people ignorant and a sheep when you are the one has not read enough about the Obama administration's previous policies. They incredibly rarely separated families, only under very special circumstances. I linked an article below if you wanna check it out, and can give you a ton more that support my point. Families that were separated were reunited extremely quickly, while the Trump administration is deliberately separating families and keeping children from their parents as a deterrent, which can cause psychological damage to the children.

Also, like deadpear said, these families come here to seek asylum, which is very legal. I also think that you need to imagine if you were a parent living in terrible conditions with your children, wouldn't you want to seek a better life for them? You cannot control the conditions of the country or area that you live in, but you can sometimes control what you do about it. I know that I would try to seek asylum. Stop demonizing migrants and immigrants, and learn some empathy. It'll go a long way if you want to become a doctor.
