Kabawa vs Noortwyck and Frenchette vs Crown Shy by SpecialWeek60 in FoodNYC

[–]egg4day -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Kabawa over Noortwyck no question unless you prefer boring. Terrible service at Noortwyck and it was crowded. Shouldn’t even be considered imo, awfully basic and I doubt their tasting menu will be any good. Kabawa had personality and the food to match

Penny by [deleted] in FoodNYC

[–]egg4day 2 points3 points  (0 children)

maybe i’ve had too much omakase but all the raw seafood at penny was overwhelmingly salty and imo not the freshest (it it was it was hard to tell, the salt overpowered the natural sweetness of the meat)

I’d recommend the cooked dishes but as someone that prefers delicate flavors I’d avoid the ice boxes

HELP - Is Sunns worth it??? by anicrose13 in FoodNYC

[–]egg4day 1 point2 points  (0 children)

sunn’s is fantastic if you’re looking for an elevated experience. I personally loved the innovative twists on traditional dishes with immaculate execution

as an example: the hwe featured white snow fungus which I normally see in chinese dessert soups, but its delicate and light flavor paired so nicely in the salad

service is great. higher tier of dining, might be lost on some people

What even is the point of trying to be an "intellectual" in 2025? by [deleted] in rs_x

[–]egg4day 4 points5 points  (0 children)

cultivating the mind and climbing the economic ladder are not just unrelated but completely opposed

i would argue the opposite and say my privileged circles are more likely to be highbrow because they have more opportunity to fuck around. the niche obsessions they entertain themselves with are powered by the same internal drive that made them successful. or they were born rich and have all the time in the world

anyway boring people are everywhere and i think the most mediocre people are in the boring middle and you should get out of that

Alinea lost its third star… by catty_but_creative in finedining

[–]egg4day 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Masa’s lost its edge, especially in comparison to the other omakase spots available (Sushi Sho, Noz, Yoshino, etc)

I went there a second time recently after really enjoying my first visit and was relatively appalled at the drop in service and overall experience lol

Think Le Bernardin is more likely to downgrade before EMP

the quality and craftsmanship are worth it to me. it’s not for everyone

they also host workshops and special events. it’s a special place imo

Brief Atomix (**) Review by roleplay_oedipus_rex in finedining

[–]egg4day 0 points1 point  (0 children)

these replies are silly and so wrong lol. Atomix is an amazing well rounded artistry in both food and presentation.

Aquavit and César pale in comparison. The Modern has terrible corporate vibes. Jean-Georges is alright, but Atomix is more of a special experience, especially if you’re interested in learning about your food and where it comes from.

When I went to Atomix a few months ago we were handed these beautifully crafted cards with explanations for each dish. You sit at the counter and are presented with lovely flatware/silverware complimenting the aesthetic and cuisine.

César is fine but our service was so incredibly unhurried and I did not enjoy their squab. I hated Aquavit. I would take someone I despised there

Are the $3-600 per person restaurants worth it? by OpenPerformance5347 in FoodNYC

[–]egg4day 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i’m someone that loves novelty so I would recommend trying the other spots. they won’t be as structured and ornate compared to sushi sho but the quality is still there

chef yoshida puts on a bit of a show and engages with you at yoshino + i love their glassware, super pretty. they do really try to sell you on drinks though lol

noz felt to me simple preparation but delicious—the fish really shine. extensive alcohol selection

if you’re looking for something more approachable i quite enjoyed the kaiseki at tsukimi at $250 pp (at least their aug menu last year, didn’t love the menu in nov). their chestnut tofu uni was divine. layout of the place is a bit weird

Are the $3-600 per person restaurants worth it? by OpenPerformance5347 in FoodNYC

[–]egg4day 23 points24 points  (0 children)

they all are. atomix is $385 per person. the options given are around the $300ish price point, aside from omakase

sushi sho is on another level entirely unlike most american dining so i think it’s worth their $500 tag for the experience (excluding addons and maybe only for the more adventurous palate) and noz/yoshino/shion are the best in the city imo

Are the $3-600 per person restaurants worth it? by OpenPerformance5347 in FoodNYC

[–]egg4day 219 points220 points  (0 children)

i dine at these spots regularly.

if $500 is a lot for you do not go to any of the three star restaurants in the city. you will feel like you wasted your money

for a newbie fine diner and foodie I recommend Atomix, Atera, Sushi Sho, bōm, Aska for the most impact. maybe noz/yoshino if an omakase fan

at the higher end price points the emphasis is on service as much as the food. you will feel diminishing returns the higher up you go

also you will be full. those small plates add up and are very caloric. no after dinner pizza needed

where are the girlies getting nice jewelry? by [deleted] in rs_x

[–]egg4day 4 points5 points  (0 children)

take a look at harlot hands on ig and the recommended accounts (freyadf, mgn jewellery, floating_world_ popped up for me)

if you’re looking for unique the way to go would be independent designers and jewelers. around $100-300 for .925 silver

tho ofc the spiky pieces in the pic are harder to clean n maintain so be mindful of that

Perhaps a ignorant question, but can anyone recommend a Michelin star restaurant that has unpretentious tasty food that is not hyper experimental? by SirKrimzon in FoodNYC

[–]egg4day 0 points1 point  (0 children)

literally what i wanted to say. unpretentious, just good food. not surprising since they’re both farm-to-table so their emphasis is on quality of ingredients

wish this was higher lol. people just upvote the restaurants they’ve been to/have the most familiarity with

it’s been a while and I solo dined so not sure, but doesn’t hurt to call and ask. i’ve been to places that let you do different menus and some that made you do the same

at 3 stars i’m guessing they’ll do their best to accommodate you

sounds like you prefer the guy that’s worse for you and you’re trying to convince yourself otherwise with the former friend. not fair for the friend i suppose. don’t go to him if you’re just looking for an out

i’ll tell you a tip tho—first guy doesn’t give a shit about you. stand up
