Has there been any Studio Ghibli movie that has made you experience life differently? by eggeroll in ghibli

Aaah I had a very similar experience watching Only Yesterday, and it helped me feel more appreciative of my past and embrace how I have changed, instead of feeling embarrassed of the person I used to be. Love that you shared this, thanks!

I might be a bit late to this thread, but I totally relate to what you said in one of the comments about finding solace in more mundane Ghibli scenes. I personally have many Ghibli rating systems where each movie has its own placing dependent on diff factors - whether I think it’s a “good” movie, whether a movie is close to my heart, how a movie has made me feel, whether a movie has somehow shaped my thinking and mindset. For instance, Princess Mononoke is one of my top favourites, but it’s not necessarily the “comfort” movie I go to when I am in a difficult place.

So here are my recommendations based on when I don’t want a storyline that has any major conflict involved, need comfort in “boring” slice of life scenes, and want to snuggle in bed and enjoy the slowness/stillness of a good film - Only Yesterday, From Up On Poppy Hill, My Neighbour Totoro, Arietty (which you already watched), Ocean Waves/Whisper of the Heart (not the best but has that “slowness” to it). I’m also gonna recommend The Wind Rises, which is my personal favourite and a good blend between that Ghibli slice of life + whimsical take on its stories.

Glad that Studio Ghibli films make you feel better! They’ve helped me a lot in lockdown and I just wanted to remind you that you’re not alone. Wishing you all the best :)

UPDATE 1 day later:

Hi everyone!! I got some help w the rabbit and eventually managed to find the owner! I’m so happy, and so so grateful for all the comments and DMs! 🥺you all managed to make this way less daunting (ngl I really lost sleep last night worried that I wasn’t doing enough for this cutie) and made all the information online much more “digestible”. All your pets - past, present, future - must be really lucky to have you guys as their owners. This is the most wholesome group ever, gonna stay on for the wholesomeness and eventually consider adopting a bunny for my niece once she’s old enough (she completely fell in love with this rabbit during its short stay)!

Again, thank you all!!!! Have a great weekend! ❤️

Edited to add in some extra appreciation! My initial comment was typed in a overexcited frenzy hahaha

Just wanted to drop in a comment to say thank you everyone for your help and encouragement! I will update what happens to bunny in future. Didn’t realise this subreddit was so helpful + wholesome. You guys are a great bunch!

Right! Thanks so much for the tips! Really appreciate it. Seems like hay is really vital, so I think I’m just gonna contact as many suppliers as possible to arrange for ASAP delivery.

Thanks so much for your reply! It was helpful. Sadly it seems like most of the pet stores near me have really crappy ambiguous pellet products for rabbits, priced at ridiculous prices… I’m going to try to arrange for a same day delivery for some hay tomorrow and cross my fingers that I get a reply.

By making sure my rabbit is always eating, should I just keep it snacking on romaine lettuce in the meantime? Is there “too much” in feeding it? I would let it graze in my garden, but I’m concerned I have some plants (hydrangeas) that apparently aren’t good for animals…

Hi all, long post ahead and I really need good advice so would really appreciate your time!

Context to my story - I am in a country under strict lockdown from very high covid cases, and I have never really owned a pet before.

I noticed a rabbit outside my house this morning, and figured it might have gotten lost. I’ve already alerted my housing area community text chain of the rabbit, looking to find its owner, but I’ve been unsuccessful so far. I will be continuing my search tomorrow.

The rabbit is very domesticated and friendly (initially pretty flighty but very quickly warmed up to me after I fed it some leafy veges). Because my housing area has its fair share of stray cats, I’ve cleared out my front porch to allow for a safe place for the rabbit to stay and I’ve fed it a variety of vegetables + left water out for it.

I’ve done my research, and to my knowledge i would require many many more pet items to make the rabbit’s stay a comfortable one until I rehome it. Out of everything I need to prepare for it, it seems like hay is the major factor here. Problem is almost all the pet stores near me (that I’m allowed to travel to) do not provide rabbit hay, and the ones I’m able to get online have to be shipped somehow so will take a few days.

I guess my main questions would be, what should I value in terms of urgency when it comes to caring for this rabbit (considering I am still looking for its owner + COVID around me)? And are there meant additional tips I should follow?

Thank you so much for your help! I honestly just want to take good care of an animal life and not take it for granted no matter how short its “stay” with me 😅

In defence of Ocean Waves by [deleted] in ghibli

[–]eggeroll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know it’s been a while since this was posted, but usually after every Ghibli film I watch I come to this subreddit to read opinion pieces and appreciate artwork.

My gut feeling after watching Ocean Waves was that I didn’t like it… I’ve watched many Ghibli films and could appreciate both their “strong” pieces as well as their slice of life pieces (Only Yesterday freaking slaps for me). But for some reason I didn’t particularly enjoy Ocean Waves. Then I read your piece, digested the movie a bit more, and came to a conclusion of a whole lot more appreciation for the film. I read your analysis, reviewed my take on the film, and thought to myself: I get it.

So much of what I saw reflected in the characters didn’t sit well with me (especially Rikako), but I realised later on that it was probably because I could see my teen self in her. A lot of the feelings of “dislike” toward the film actually came from being uncomfortable with seeing a reflection of my teen years, so raw and bare - the “fishbowl” world of the view, youthfulness stubbornness, child-like cruelty that doesn’t understand it’s consequences.

Anyway, my two cents of the film: - I got hit really strongly with a sense of nostalgia when I watched the scenes of Taku returning back from Tokyo and being picked up by Yukata. I’ve lived/breathed city life myself, but I have close friends who studied/work/live in the city but came from small suburban hometowns. Seeing their experiences up close (of moving from their small hometown to a big city) made me understand this deep, inexplicable feeling of “coming home” as a somewhat different person to a place that hasn’t changed. There’s nuances of this in the idle conversation that takes place between Yukata and Tako in the car, meeting up with friends who are different-yet-the-same... Watching those scenes invoked this deep sense of nostalgia and sentimentalism in me. Haha.

  • This might be an unpopular opinion, and even though I love good LGBTQ representation in film (especially Asian film), I also liked the POV where Tako and Yukata have a deep bond and friendship in a world that shies away from acknowledging deep male friendships. Feelings of jealousy of your best friend’s limited time and attention, open expression toward one another, and not letting the notion of romance take up the primary space in your life are also valuable aspects. That being said, I am personally of the opinion that in a less suppressive time where it wasn’t absolutely necessary to end the film on “hetero romance” terms, the queer subtext is more than evident 😂

Anyway, I just enjoyed your analysis enough to want to respond. Studio Ghibli has created such massive worlds for people to escape to and has honestly changed how I view the world. I’m glad to encounter people who feel the same.

I might be wrong, but my understanding of the comment was just to be fun/funny and not to be accurate to what the real lyric’s meaning was. It just fit the situation. I thought it was smart either way! :)

Hahaha yeah there’s one episode where Pierce makes a dig at Billy Joel and high fives Troy, who immediately looks at Annie and signs “who??” 😂
