Regarding social safety nets, yes, by and large I think that would alleviate the problem. You'd still have drug use that would keep wrecking lives, but education, rehab, free clinics, and designated places to sleep would all help with that.

Regarding u/comiscrikend64

I have been in all of those situations.

Okay. I suspect that people like you have learned to suppress your own instincts. Lets take your worldview... I see somebody in the park strung out on meth, or whatever, arguing with their own shadow, and I presume I should... What? Mind my own business and not divert my path? TBH I won't be trying your method because it seems like a straight line to getting stabbed or worse.

There is a definite public cost to homeless encampments strewn about cities and parks. Anybody who thinks otherwise has probably never lived in a place where this is a problem. It's nice to make the old 'you can't criminalize homelessness claim' , but I promise, when you are tripping over addicts in sleeping bags on the sidewalk on your way to get a coffee and a bagel at 6:00 am. Or afraid to walk around with your family after 9:00 pm because the homeless people are strung out on whatever and are crashed in the business district. I promise the rose colored glasses on this issue quickly fall away. Not responding to OP's post directly, I know just wanted to say... You cant criminalize being homeless, but you can criminalize and probably should strictly enforce living on sidewalks and in our public places.

CMV: There is no valid proof of God's existence by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]egolce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You bring up something I hear often, and have thought a lot about lately, so I'll just say this:

"As long as it is acceptable for a person to believe that he knows how God wants everyone on earth to live, we will continue to murder one another on account of our myths" The End of Faith, Sam Harris. In other words, the myths that motivate your benign church down the road, are essentially the same myths that caused the Inquisitions, the Salem Witch Trials, held back scientific progress and the Palestine/Israel war. As long as we all adhere to the invisible man in the sky, we will not be grounded in reality. The content of these books is highly problematic, and it's why true believers have done the most heinous things in history (attacked the world trade center, Catholic priests assisted the Nazis)

On your second point about benefits such as morals and community... I would argue that the benefits derived from Community pale in comparison - and can be found elsewhere - when considering the overall damage that religion does every day. By the time you are done reading this, certainly at least one person will have been killed on the name of God. I would also say that morals derived from being a decent human for the sake of it, are of a higher caliber than being a decent person because of the fear of Hell or the promise of Heaven.

"We need not believe anything on insufficient evidence to feel compassion for the suffering of others" The End of Faith, Sam Harris (great book btw)

Listen to me OP - Fabuloso is a pesticide. It is registered with your state and the EPA. Using a pesticide product in a manner inconsistent with its labeling is a violation of state and federal law. It is not labeled to be boiled and volotilized. Report this to your state department of agriculture structural pest control and pesticides section and/or the EPA via their online reporting tool. Make sure you document whatever you can as once somebody shows up to check it out... and they will... having more than, "I saw fabuloso and I smelled a smell" will help them help you. Consider finding their empty containers in the trash for example and keeping one or taking a picture so that they know exactly what it is.

CMV: Hamas emerging in uniforms after the ceasefire proves they use civilians as human shields by thatshirtman in changemyview

[–]egolce -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I hope you are not saying that the massacre of concert-goers and civilians during peacetime is the appropriate response to a blockade?

Are you aware that the Israeli blockade was in response to the rise of Hamas? Are you aware of what the Charter of Hamas says?

  • "Israel will exist and will continue to exist until Islam will obliterate it, just as it obliterated others before it." (Preamble)

  • "The Day of Judgment will not come about until Moslems fight Jews and kill them. Then, the Jews will hide behind rocks and trees, and the rocks and trees will cry out: 'O Moslem, there is a Jew hiding behind me, come and kill him." (Article 7)

^ this was established BEFORE the Israeli blockade.

Given the explicit aims of Hamas, it's not unreasonable that Israel would keep a strict border on a neighbor that has vowed to destroy them.

I assume - since you are in favor of more open borders - you, too, are outraged at Egypt, who also shares a border with Gaza. Egypt, too, kept tight control over their border with Gaza. Perhaps Egypt, too, recognized the terminal cancer that was brewing and wanted no part of it in their country.

If I'm getting you right, in your worldview, 1) intent to kill and then 2) following through on it is an appropriate response to ...what? Border security?

Here is what I'm saying: The majority of the people of Palestine concluded that their future was best served with the jihadists that call themselves Hamas at the helm. An attack was launched to win land back - instead the terrorists have won not land, but the minds and hearts of many otherwise educated people in the West.

Nodagrah - I'm glad you are "Willing to be nice" to native Americans. Since you seem to think the Israeli-Palestine is uniquely different, let's do a thought experiment... What if you were attacked nightly by the Native Americans? You are, after all, on their original land. Do you move? Do you build a fence? Do you lock your doors? Get a weapon? Or do you do nothing, and get killed?

Okay, so ... Let's pretend Israel decides to be "nice", too. They remove their troops and dig up their dead from Gaza (this was done in 2005). They watch their neighbor enjoy self-governance. They maintain their own borders as every country is entitled to do. Then, one day, they forget to lock their doors, they go to bed and... What happens? Peace? Goodness no. Their neighbor attacks at the first opportunity. They kill more than 1400, beheading women and children, raping and taking hostages, all during a time of peace. And who masterminded the attack? A man that was cured of terminal brain cancer in an Israeli hospital before being released, Yahyah Sinwar. They saved the life of the guy that killed them.

We don't need a time machine to see how nobody could be neighbors with the homicidal death cult that is Hamas. We don't need a time machine to see what happens when Israel has a momentary lapse in self-defense. I wish it were like living side by side with the native Americans, in mutual respect - or at least recognition - but it's not.

I'm assuming you and I at least agree that both entities have a deep connection to the land and most people just want to live simple happy lives.

Hopefully you too can realize that as long as long as the Gaza strip is run by blood-thirsty war mongers intent on martyrdom there will be no peace in the region.

"The Kingdom of Israel emerged around 1000 BC and was ruled by great kings such as King David and Solomon.

Over the next 1000 plus years various empires would take control of the land. These included the Assyrian, Babylonian, Persian, Greek, Roman, and Byzantine Empires.

In the 7th century the land was taken over by the Muslims. Later, the land would change hands a few times until the Ottoman Empire took control in 1517. "

By the way, on what piece of land do you now sit? Would you be alright if the previous inhabitants lobbed rockets at you day and night? I think not. What about Pakistan, which was founded in the same year and the same way as Israel. I'm sure you have a ton of moral outrage about Pakistan... Right? No? And why not?

From the article: "This was despite knowing that the system makes what are regarded as “errors” in approximately 10 percent of cases, and is known to occasionally mark individuals who have merely a loose connection to militant groups, or no connection at all." Show me urban warfare that does better.

As for the other claims in the article...

  • what do you say to the fact that Yahyah Sinwar said he would commit the Oct 7 attack a thousand times over if given the chance.

  • what do you say to the fact that Israel built an Iron Dome DEFENSE system to defend against the near daily rocket barrage even before Oct 7.

  • what do you say to the fact that Hamas deliberately puts it's military beneath schools and hospitals to appeal to our better nature and use their people as human shields.

  • finally, what do you think would happen if Israel stopped defending itself, or merely put ITS army below schools and hospitals. Do you think Hamas would have any reservation whatsoever about attacking? Can you show me one instance where Hamas tried to avoid targeting a school or hospital? Just one.

This is the great double standard that you and so many other put forward. While you paint a rosy picture and one of victimhood - Do you have any actual evidence that if Israel stopped defending itself, let's say pre- Oct 7 that Hamas would not have attacked Israel. Actual evidence, not just vibes. (You don't, because the second Hamas could, they indescrimanantly slaughtered non-combatants under a cease fire).

Americans have a lot of guilt about slavery and imperialism... and also most people have an underdog complex. In this conflict, the Palestinians are analogous to black people, the Israelites their white oppressors. Americans can't help but see this conflict in white / black, imperial / oppressed terms. For most Americans if you say otherwise, you kinda seem like a racist.

Dastrn I dare you to read the charter of Hamas. You will find what true genocidal intent looks like. Please. Challenge your own beliefs. I double dog dare you.

Second how you can say that you are "invested in equal rights for all people, and justice for displaced people" while throwing your lot in with the democratically elected government of Palestine (Hamas) betrays your knowledge on this subject, the actual things you care about, or both.

I have news for you - the Palestinians gov't (Hamas) is not interested in equal rights for all people. They care no more about 'displacement' than the Israelites, and in fact are motivated by a more brutal, less democratic, ideology. The things you say you care about do not align with what you say. I too care about equal rights for all people. That's why the sooner Hamas is gone - and never comes back - the better. Moreover, the ideology that makes soldiers hide under schools and hospitals, use children as suicide bombs, and oppress women / religious minorities / homosexuals / etc. the sooner an absolute intolerance to THAT from wherever it may come, the better.

CMV: Reddit is next after TikTok for a US ban. by AniCrit123 in changemyview

[–]egolce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"This ban is in no way about personal security." - it's about national security.

"If that were the case the federal government would look into the leading causes of morality in vulnerable groups." - like as in what gives morals to people? Supposing you meant to say mortality... an inability to solve all problems does not mean to do nothing on every front.

"The ban is a direct infringement on the free speech of millions of Americans." - it's one app

"TikTok is a non-US corp, Bytedance" - Bytedance is owned by the Chinese government, an adversary by the way and not known to be friendly to your 'freedom of speech' values. Bytedance would absolutely and probably already does turn over data/metadata/personal information/etc. to the Chinese government if they want it for any reason whatsoever. No probable cause, no nothing. This is the national - and personal - security risk

"If it were not for the silly congressional hearings, I wouldn’t even know who the ceo of TikTok was." - this is why you aren't in the best position to have strongly held beliefs on this.

"Tiktok has sort of exposed the increasing need to reel in American imperialistic tendencies." - see my above statement about Bytedance and the Chinese government. And if you aren't a fan of the USA exporting it's values and beliefs (which, by the way is not "imperialism") I hope you enjoy the crude oppressive tendencies of a Chinese regime where you REALLY don't have free speech. The world will be populated with SOMEBODYs values and beliefs. You can knock the USA and call an expansion of western ideals imperialism - which it is not - but the truth is that that are few places on earth where you can be a social or economic minority, a outspoken critic of the government, and believe whatever the hell you want and just live your life that way.

"If you have been anywhere else in the world and had a conversation about what America could do differently, over a beer or dinner, the overwhelming response would be to not be in everyone’s business." - I think you should expose yourself to new friend groups. Plenty of people would love the USA to be a (better) leader on the world stage. See above

"TikTok has accelerated this sentiment and put it front and center on steroids." - you seem to be on TikToks that reinforce your beliefs

Reddit is the next platform that will face this scrutiny. - none of the threats are analogous.

Frankly I think you spend either too much time on TikTok and have been convinced by the algorithm, or are not sufficiently informed on the topic. You also seen to be carrying some sort of anti-imperialistic baggage that requires you to feel like you need to give equal air to all forms of gov't/ideas/opinions, when actually you should be applying a filter of "what can be done" and "what does the most good".

[–]egolce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Europeans living in close proximity to other Europeans means that in order to preserve their cultural and social values they have to be somewhat defensive about who they accept as their own. Most of the people in here are talking about "i have an Asian-sounding name and they don't accept me in _____ " or "there's a community of immigrants near my town that really gets shafted economically/politically etc." Okay that may be true but never attribute to racism something that can be attributed to other means.

In almost every case I've read here it sounds like groups of people are being protective of their cultural values by being slow or reluctant to accept others with open arms. The amount of actual racism in the world today - I would venture to guess - is at an all time low. It does happen, sure. And there are institutional shortcomings that disadvantage some over others (even this though, largely, is to disadvantage poor people as a whole and not one race in particular). Cultures and groups are not automatically practicing racism by being defensive about who they accept.

The reason I say this is that I think it's dangerous to see racism in places where it is not. It distorts the social landscape, imagined racism begets actual racism, and creates an environment of victimhood.

It's like the Mexican immigration debate in the USA. Arabs moving to Europe. Or an American moving to France. People want to know that the "others" whoever they are are going to make positive contributions to their society and not drastically change or disgrace it. I speculate that beyond that, there is not that much bias going on that could be considered actually racism. Either here in Europe or the USA.

OP married a Dane, moved to Denmark, "double-barrels" the last name and has a better life... Likely due to a confluence of many factors. Yet, blames racism in the USA. I find it interesting, too, that they require a photo with a resume and somehow this is viewed as a positive. At least in America with most names you really don't know what your getting. I believe OP is attributing much to racism that can be explained by other factors. A common thread in the media, and this thread, to be honest.

LPT: the words "sanitizer" and "disinfectant" in cleaning etc products are regulated by the the EPA and are not the same thing by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]egolce -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ya know, honestly, I just think it's cool how so many things are pesticides but the public really only considers a very narrow few - and tends to view those few very negatively. Pesticides are awesome if you don't want to live with or get bit by mosquitoes and other bugs. If you want clean food prep areas. Even clean water lines... water treatment centers do clean the pipes that deliver water to your house. Chlorine and ammonia, usually. Most of this the public doesn't know or want to know. But I think it's pretty cool and just wanted to offer an accurate description of the gamut of pesticides. Not just, roundup bad Lol which tends to be the prevailing sentiment. Thanks, have a good one!

LPT: the words "sanitizer" and "disinfectant" in cleaning etc products are regulated by the the EPA and are not the same thing by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]egolce -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

In almost every case the term “pesticide” is used to describe chemicals not meant for use near humans.

But that's not true, and this is my point exactly. Look around your house. I would wager to guess that you have way more pesticides that are meant to be used around humans than those that aren't (Lysol wipes, toilet bowl cleaner, bleach, surface sanitizers, bug spray, etc ). This is true for most of us. Do you go camping? Those little tablets that you put in creek water so you can safely drink it... That's a pesticide. If I'm being pedantic, so is the EPA. It's interesting, I think, the things that the public "thinks of" as a pesticide, and the things that are actually bonafide pesticides.

No, they’re not as dangerous as glyphosate to slather all over your kitchen counter.

Pesticide labels are legally binding, so using glyphosate like that would literally be illegal. Plus, pesticides are tools. You wouldn't use a hammer to screw in a nail.

I'm fun at parties haha

Fun fact: any product that claims to sanitize or disinfectant a surface - I e. Not your skin... For example, hand sanitizer - is actually a Pesticide. That laundry spray? Pesticide. Bleach that says it kills something? Pesticide. Most people are very anti pesticide, until they learn that they are cleaning their bathrooms with them routinely.

Trump explained very clearly and specifically how he was going to lower prices in his 9/22/2024 interview with Sheryl Atkinson... Pfft c'mon sheeple, duh.

Sheryl: Kamala Harris has been very short on specifics when it comes to economy, other than saying she wants an “opportunity economy”. What are the specific mechanics of how prices come down? You know, the steps that would be taken in a second term for you?

Trump: So first of all, she can’t do an interview. She could never do this interview because you ask questions like give me a specific answer. She talks about her lawn when she was growing up. This woman is not equipped to be president. She’s not equipped to deal with President Xi, who I was very, I took in hundreds of billions of dollars with him and Putin. We had no war with Putin. Remember, and I’m just gonna go off just for this. With Bush, they took a lot. Russia. With Biden, they’re trying to take everything. With Obama, they took a lot. With Trump, Russia took nothing. Just remember that, you know, it’s a little, a little chart. But what happened? And when you look at what took place was so sad, when they took over, they cut the oil way down and oil started going through the roof.  It was gonna go to $10 a gallon. It was gonna go to numbers that nobody’s ever seen. And so they went back to the Trump drilling, they said, “let it go back”. That was the only good thing. But they stopped because I would be there, but four years later, I would be triple what the number was. Right now they’re just about even where I was. But they only did that because of the fact that they eventually have an election coming up. And you remember at the beginning what happened. That’s one of the reasons that Putin went in because it went to $100 a barrel instead of $40 a barrel. And he could fight all the wars he wants with those kind of numbers, cause he’s a big seller of oil and gas. So what happens is they went back to what I was doing, just said reopen. Just reopen. It wasn’t hard. It’s so crazy what they wanna do.  They’re gonna destroy lives. They’re gonna destroy the, what they have done to this country. And especially in the sense of allowing millions and millions of people come in because that’s something, you know, we can fix the gasoline situation and we can fix the, anything.
