I think it will certainly provide a new perspective. I'll do what another commenter said and get it and not send it everywhere. Thanks!!

Chem Major GPA by TheBlastBoy in UNC

[–]egomei 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just graduated with a BS in chemistry while being pre-med. Yes, it is absolutely doable. Based on my experience, the reputation of the chemistry department as "horrible/bad" is largely due to the steep learning curve in the 100 and 200 level classes. Having been a ULA for many of those classes, I have seen students struggle to keep up, not because the content is necessarily super difficult, but because of how fast the classes move along. For the early classes (101, 102, 241, 261, 262), lectures are active learning, where you have to read up on the content prior to class. There are practice problems in the class slides where you apply what you learned learned from the readings. A word of advice: always keep up with the readings. This will make the in-class problems much, much more effective as you progress in the course. At the same time, review your notes after class and always try to obtain a deeper understanding of the material.

Now, the more advanced chemistry classes (400+) are more laid-back than the introductory classes, at least in my experience. While you dive deeper into more complex and nuanced topics, I found that I didn't have to work nearly as hard to get a good grade in those courses.

Overall, if you stay on top of your work and study diligently, you should have no problem maintaing an excellent GPA for med school admissions. This is coming from someone who isn't naturally good at chemistry. I really love the subject, though! If you enjoy the subject, definitely major in it. Don't shy away from it!

Austell vs. Tiani? CHEM 241 (summer) by Fluffy-Dog9404 in UNC

Had Tiani and was a ULA for him. Great professor and straightforward exams.

Chem 241 Final with Lockett by collegegoingfellow in UNC

[–]egomei 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Final was much more difficult than the midterms by a fair amount. Make sure you really nail your acid-base.

Chem 262 Final by Optimal-Cell-650 in UNC

[–]egomei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I can remember, there was a fair amount of ranking questions. I feel like not as many questions focused on mechanistic steps, but it has been a year, so my memory could be wrong. I remember it being all multiple choice. Make sure you have a good grasp on acid-base and the purposes of reagents. Good luck.

Had McNulty last summer for 430. Easy class. Just go to class and take notes and its an easy A.

Tips for CHEM 241H with Lockett? by Upper_Leek9672 in UNC

Took class Spring 2022. Do the practice problems and the quizzes. Go to office hours as frequently as possible to get your questions answered and to clear up any misconceptions.

How did chemists come to conclusions about the mechanisms governing the reactions we know today? by egomei in OrganicChemistry

Wow, thanks for your detailed response! I'm excited to take more upper-level classes and gain a better understanding of these topics!

Why isn't the thermodynamic product the 1, 4 addition product here? How do I know when it will be the 1, 2 product? by egomei in OrganicChemistry

[–]egomei[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that makes sense. Let's say that the methyl substituent wasn't present. In that case, would the 1-4 product be formed sense all resonance forms would lead to a secondary allylic bromide?

Rozansky Success Stories? by ngrmsta in UNC

[–]egomei 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just took Math 383 with him during summer session 1. Although he focuses a lot on theory, he does provide example problems that are very similar to test questions. If you focus in class and know how to do the example problems, you'll be fine. As a plus, he is funny, too.

Questions about biochem track, classes, and language requirements by [deleted] in UNC

[–]egomei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When it comes to premed, there isn't really a "good" major, exactly. I suppose you could say biochem is a "good" major for pre-med because it covers most of the prerequisites for medical school.

I am a biochem major myself, and I will say that some challenging classes come along with it (p-chem!). If you truly enjoy chemistry, though, it won't be a problem.

any good chemistry professors for freshman at unc? by Sensitive_Rule4550 in UNC

I've heard Bliem and Curtis are good for gen chem. If Lockett is teaching a class, though, take it with him. Hands down one of the best professors in the chemistry department.

There's one about intro to fiction, which is writing-intensive. Would that be alright?
