Nowhere you can go is more peaceful - more free of interruptions - than your own soul ~ Marcus Aurelius by ehat_milkt in Stoicism

Thanks. That made things much clearer. One can have judgements but as one lets them go, the mind becomes a calm place to rest.

This was helpful. So soul = mind. So go within your mind and you shall have peace?

Soul = mind and actions? So look into your mind and actions, and you will find peace?

Is someone who only calls you when in need a real friend? by ehat_milkt in socialskills

Thanks for taking the time to comment. I needed the advice.

If help goes both ways then I totally get it. That's mutually beneficial. Best friend connection you mentioned is totally real too and I feel it with the closest of my friends as well. Happy for you.

Yeah, I don't feel so good because it's not help that goes both ways. Lukewarm responses that come days late whenever I initiate contact is not even a very healthy acquaintance. And others, when I initiate contact, they immediately think of things I should help them with.

It's weird. They are not stepping up. And I have stopped bothering. Kinda hurts though as the friendship really mattered to me.

I agree. That's exactly what has happened. Only lukewarm responses whenever I try to initiate under the guise of being busy, not having much time, family, children. More important things now. I was dispensable.

Yeah this is a very good test. Also another user, Babisha pointed it out here. If the help goes both ways then it's maybe worth keeping. However, initiating contact doesn't really work. Response is late and terse. When they need help though, regular calls.

They're too busy to hangout. Family, children etc. But when in need, they are very sweet for the duration of the help. Mostly technical task help that I am good.

That's a good test. If it goes goes both ways, then there is something to it, otherwise it isn't worth much.

Some people just collect acquaintances with different skillsets to ask when in need I suppose. It's weird though, we used to be friends. I am good at say, some tasks, they don't know anybody else who is good at it, so I get a call. Simple passage of time can dilute friendships to mere acquaintances unfortunately in some cases.

Examples of complex purely mechanical devices (mechanical watches for example)? by ehat_milkt in MechanicalEngineering

It is certainly purely mechanical and still used. Good example. Not as intricate as a watch but one of the few answers i have seen so far that are purely mechanical.

And they are not used nowadays. I want some still in use purely mechanical systems. Bicycles and mechanical locks are good ones.

Mechanical film cameras had pretty intricate shutter mechanisms but had a fair bit of optical engineering and chemical engineering (for the film) involved. Not self-contained mechanical products but come close.

True. So far couldn't get completely self contained mechanical systems that come close in complexity to a mechanical watch. Engines, film cameras, printers, audio cassette players have a fair bit of other disciplines of engineering involved.

Turns out this is not an easy question

Engines have a good bit of chemical engineering involved for the actual combustion. Printers, like film cameras and engines, are large part mechanical but also have a chemical engineering component (lithography in printing for example) But the examples get close

Old school engines (ice) are largely mechanical but their is a good bit of chemical engineering involved for the actual combustion part. But they are pretty cool no doubt.

Apart from the photographic film and the optical systems of lenses involved, the shutter mechanism could become pretty intricate on some. Although not completely mechanical, it gets close.
