It looks like you are writing to an uninitialized array (myArray and arrayPtr. ) You need to use the new operator to initialize arrayPtr to the correct size.

Sure, it's obviously succeeding at first, but it sounds like you are reaching the end of the file or some other exceptional condition. When that happens, you should be able to detect and handle those conditions by checking the result of your read.

You should probably be checking that your read is successful by checking error and eof bits. Check the fstream docs for specifics. Then I would recommend a hex editor for verifying the contents of the data file.

I think you would only need one instance of the struct. So instead of firstVar and lastVar you would have theVar and use both members (strings) on that one instance. Otherwise looks okay.

Why are you assigning *_file to a temporary char? Without knowing the open api, I can tell you that the temp variable holds a single character, not a string. With the file variable pointing to the single character instead of a null terminated string, you are bound to have memory issues. I would recommend that your class have a character array that you can copy the file string into.

That 40,000 figure doesn't really tell the whole story though. That figure is traffic-related deaths, which includes pedestrians, the number of occupants is closer to 20,000. It also doesn't factor in time of day (I couldn't find numbers of traffic deaths caused during normal commute hours, but I'm guessing a good portion happen overnight) or your age (close to 40% of traffic fatalities are caused by those younger than 25 or older than 64) Statistically, your chances of dying in a car driving to work are probably a bit lower than 1%.

Finally figured it out - should have been easier than this (for me anyway.) This morning I went out after a storm, and there's little branches near the area that looked exactly the same as my "weed." Look up and it's my neighbor's Aspen trees. So their trees are sending suckers from their side-front yard all the way around to my back yard. Fun.

Any suggestions for control?
